India 2014 Main Rice Crop Planting Reaches 37.487
Million Hectares as of 26 September, 2014; Up
Slightly from Last Year

Planting for kharif rice crop, or main rice crop (June December) in India has reached around 37.487 million
hectares of rice area as of September 26, 2014, up slightly from around 37.427 million hectares planted during
the same time last year, according a statement released by the Indian Agriculture Ministry.


Total planting for kharif crops (Including rice, pulses, Coarse Cereals etc.) in India reached at about 101.926
million hectares as of September 26, 2014, down about 2% from about 104.469 million hectares recorded
during same time last year.

Go Green to Tackle Iron Deficiency in Soil for
Paddy Crop

In the last of the series on how nutrients help or hinder the growth of paddy plant, Dr Chinnam Naidu, a rice
researcher and Programme Coordinator, Agriculture Extension at Krishi Vignan Kendra in Aamudalavalasa in
south India, talks about tackling iron deficiency in soil while growing paddy. Iron deficiency is evident in rice
plants where water is not managed properly.
Oryza: How does one know that the plant has iron deficiency?
Dr Naidu: Symptoms: The deficiency is evident in tender leaves when the veins in the leaf starts turning
yellowish which in turn becomes white and then totally dry. Because of this, the plant records stunted growth.
The symptoms show up very early after the seeds are planted.
Oryza: So what should one do to tackle this?
Dr Naidu: Solution: Administer 20 gm of Ferris Sulphate and 2gm of sour salt in one litre of water. Use a more
diluted version if the weather is hot.
Oryza: Can you share other important tips for nutrient management of paddy plants?
Dr Naidu: Other tips to help ensure that the soil is fertile enough to grow plants are:
- Use organic and inorganic fertilizers together
- Administer four tonnes of the fertilizer per acre every year before summer so that the plant absorbs the
elements are is ready when it turns come after a few months.
- Use two tonnes of vermicompost every year for one acre of land.


- Use green manure for the paddy crop. In this process, crops which have already been uprooted and are dying
are grown in the paddy field to add nutrients and organic matter to the soil. A green manure crop is grown for a
specific period of time, and then ploughed and incorporated into the soil.

India Average Wholesale Rice Prices Decrease
Sharply in September 2014

India average wholesale rice prices decreased sharply by about 23% m/m to Rs.2,517 per quintal in September
2014, from Rs.3,254 per quintal in August 2014, and down about 7% y/y from Rs.2,699 per quintal in
September 2013, according to official sources.In terms of USD per ton, wholesale rice prices in India stand at
about $411 per ton (using current exchange rates) in September 2014, down about 24% m/m from about $542
per ton (using historical exchange rates) in August 2014, and down about 6% y/y from around $435 per ton
(using historical exchange rates) in September 2013.
The average wholesale rice price for January - September 2014 stands at Rs.2,896 per quintal, up about 9%
m/m from Rs.2,653 per quintal during the same period in 2013. In USD per ton terms, the average wholesale
price for January - September 2014 stood at about $478 per ton (using historical exchange rates), up about 4%
y/y from about $460 per ton during the same period in 2013.

Italy Celebrates Old Rice Dish with an Annual
Industry Fair

A very big fair event, all centered on Italian
rice, will take place for four weeks, until
October 12, in Isola della Scala, Italy, not far
from Verona area, the town of Shakespeares
Romeo and Juliet. The event is the 48th edition
of Fiera del riso (Rice Fair) and Il risotto nel
mondo (Rice around the World). In the area, a
particular variety of rice is grown called the
Vialone Nano Veronese, the years best seller
and a rice variety most appreciated for cooking
the dish risotto. The variety also
enjoys "Protected geographical indication"
denomination of quality from the European
Union (EU).
Every year about 500,000 visitors from across Northern Italy crowd the halls of the fair, where each day they
can find show cooking events, tasting sessions, gastronomic competitions, guided tours around the district and
local monuments, exhibitions, sports and traditional folk events, combined with the availability of "Risotto
all'Isolana," the typical local recipe of risotto. The fair includes sales of rice and products of various kinds.

Futures Fall During Afternoon Trading to Begin

Chicago rough rice futures for Nov delivery settled 8 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) lower at $12.735 per cwt
(about $281 per ton). Rough rice futures got off to a shaky start for the week, dropping to a nearly double digit
loss today, despite seeing the other grains manage to log solid gains. Technically the market faces firm
resistance around $12.810 per cwt (about $282 per ton), provided by the 50-day moving average. A break out
and closing above this level would likely trigger additional buying that could see prices move to test
psychological resistance at $13.000 per cwt (about $287 per ton).
The other grains fared better, beginning the week on a positive note; Soybeans closed about 1.5% higher at
$9.2350 per bushel; wheat finished about 1.5% higher at $4.8125 per bushel, and corn finished the day about
0.9% higher at $3.2675 per bushel.U.S. stocks came off morning lows but failed to hold any positive turn as
investors looked ahead to a week of economic reports. Energy led declines on the S&P and Dow Jones
Industrial Average. In late-morning trade, the Nasdaq reversed losses to turn positive briefly before trading in
the red again. The Dow and S&P also regained ground after falling about 1% in the open. Stocks did not move
much in reaction to a 1% decline in pending home sales for August, and futures were little changed after reports
that personal income rose 0.3% in August, as expected.
Earlier, protests in Hong Kong had rattled global markets and U.S. stocks about percent lower, but most
analysts said the situation would not have a long-lasting impact on markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average
shaved earlier losses of 178 points, to trade down 81 points, or 0.47%, at 17,031 around noon. The S&P 500
was down 8 points, or 0.44%, at 1,974, with energy the greatest decliner and utilities the only advancer among
10 sectors. The Nasdaq fell 17 points, or 0.39%, to 4,494. Gold is trading about 0.2% higher, crude oil is seen
trading about 1.1% higher, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading slightly lower at about 1:00pm Chicago
time.Friday, there were 1,000 contracts traded, up from 297 contracts traded on Thursday. Open interest the
number of contracts outstanding on Friday increased by 201 contracts to 9,458.

Nowhere as Harvest Passes Half-way Mark

As of today, offers held steady around $13.00-$13.33 per cwt fob farm (about $287-$294 per ton) while bids
could be found slightly lower around $13.00-$13.33 per cwt (about $287-$294 per ton) for October delivery and
there were more reports of rice trading around $13.10-$13.30 per cwt (about $289-293 per ton) for prompt
delivery.
In the meantime, the USDA estimates that as of Sep 28th, 59% of the U.S. rice crop has been harvested which
was 3% ahead of last year but 3% less than the previous 5-year average. As of now, the USDA estimates that
64% of the rice crop in Arkansas has been harvested compared to 13% in California, 97% in Louisiana, 73% in
Mississippi, 47% in Missouri, and 98% in Texas.

The U.S. cash market was active again today as the harvest continues to ramp up and as rice that has to move
quickly looks for a home.There was also word from the Iraqi Grain Board yesterday that they will extend
bidding for their latest tender until next week in an effort to see if they can get more attractive offers.As of
today, offers could still be found near $13.00-$13.33 per cwt fob farm (about $287-$294 per ton) while bids
were unchanged around $13.00-$13.33 per cwt (about $287-$294 per ton) for October delivery and there were
reports of rice trading around $13.10-$13.30 per cwt (about $289-293 per ton) for prompt delivery.

Oryza White Rice Index Index Dips on Lower
Asian Rice Export Quotes

The Oryza White Rice Index, a weighted average of global white rice export quotes, ended this week at about
$468 per ton, down about $5 per ton from a week ago, down about $9 per ton from a month ago and up about
$17 per ton from a year ago.
Thailand
Thailand 5% broken rice is today quoted at about $440 per ton, down about $5 per ton from a week and month
ago and up about $15 per ton from a year ago.
A study by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerces International Trade Studies Center calls for an
urgent revamp of the Thai rice sector in order to retain its share of the global rice market.


So far in 2014, Indonesia has imported about 425,000 tons of rice from Thailand and Vietnam in efforts to
build up stockpiles and stabilize domestic prices, according to Bloomberg.
The Bureau of Customs in the Philippines has seized about 1,250 tons of illegally imported Thai rice.
Separately, the Philippines lost about 87,576 tons of rice as a result of typhoons Lui and Mario, according to the
crop damage report released by the Philippines Department of Agriculture, which states that about 119,997
hectares of rice acreage were affected.
Vietnam
Vietnam 5% broken rice is today quoted at about $445 per ton, unchanged from a week ago, down about $5 per
ton from a month ago and up about $85 per ton from a year ago.
Paddy rice production for 2014 in Vietnam is estimated at around 45 million tons (about 28.125 million tons,
basis milled), according to Reuters. The Agriculture Ministry has attributed the increase to higher output from
the winter-spring crop. During January 1-September 18, Vietnam exported about 4.453 million tons of rice,
about 15% less than in the same period in 2013, according to the Vietnam Food Association.
The government has authorized the state-owned rice exporting companies Northern Food Corporation
(Vinafood 1) and Southern Food Corporation (Vinafood 2) to carry out rice export negotiations with
concentrated markets.
India

about $15 per ton from a month ago and up about $10 per ton from a year ago.
Planting for the kharif (main) rice crop (June-December) has reached about 37.36 million hectares as of
September 19, up slightly from the 37.315 million hectares planted during the same period last year, according
to the Indian Agriculture Ministry.
Indias rice exports to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) have increased about 23 times from about $78
million in 2009 to about $1.8 billion in 2013, according to the USDA.
Pakistan
Pakistan 5% broken rice is today quoted at about $410 per ton, down about $15 per ton from a week ago, down
about $30 per ton from a month ago and up about $20 per ton from a year ago.


In the first two months of FY 2014-15 (July-June), Pakistan has exported about 381,044 tons of rice, a decrease
of about 6% from the same period in FY 2013-14, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
Central & South America
Brazil 5% broken rice is today shown at about $610 per ton, unchanged from a week and a month ago and down
about $30 per ton from a year ago.
The Brazilian paddy rice index maintained by CEPEA reached around 36.86 real per 50 kilograms as of
September 22, 2014, down about 0.08% from around 36.89 real per 50 kilograms recorded on September 15,
2014. In terms of USD per ton, the index reached around $309 per ton on September 22, 2014, down about 5%
from around $325 per ton recorded on September 15, 2014.
Five percent broken rice from Uruguay and Argentina rice today shown at about $615 per ton, unchanged
from a week and a month ago and down about $5 per ton from a year ago.
U.S.
U.S. 4% broken rice is today shown at about $530 per ton, unchanged from a week ago, down about $10 per ton
from a month ago and down about $75 per ton from a year ago.
Chicago rough rice futures for November delivery didnt move much this week, opening at $12.695 per cwt
(about $280 per ton) on Monday and only reaching $12.765 (about $281 per ton) on Thursday before hitting a
high of $12.910 (about $285 per ton) on Friday. Futures closed at $12.820 per cwt (about $284 per ton) Friday
afternoon.
Rough rice cash prices held steady with offers around $13.00-$13.33 per cwt fob farm (about $287-$294 per
ton) throughout the week and bids firming up slightly to $13.00-$13.50 per cwt (about $287-$298 per ton).
Other Markets
In the first seven months of 2014, China has imported about 1.503 million tons of rice, a decrease of about 6%
from the same period in 2013, according to the China Customs General Administration.
Chinese authorities are taking measures to stop cross border rice exports from Myanmar via the Muse border,
according to local sources.


The UNs Food and Agricultural Organization has forecasted Myanmars MY 2014-15 (July-June) milled rice
exports at around 700,000 tons, up 25% from its forecasts last month.
Cambodia 5% broken rice is today shown at about $470 per ton, unchanged from a week and a month ago and
up about $20 per ton from a year ago.
South Koreas state-run Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (KAFTC) has purchased 21,000 tons of
Chinese origin rice in a tender. Separately, the South Korean government will procure 370,000 tons of locally
produced rice this year in efforts to boost the countrys stockpiles and control failing prices, according to the
Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
Three different regions in Spain have earned the status of Protected Denomination of Origin: Calasparra D.O.,
Valencia D.O., and Arroz Delta del Ebro D.O.
Ghanas government is losing about GH Cedi 76.8 million (about $22.5 million) annually due to the continuing
ban on inland rice importation, according to a Special Advisor for Local Rice Production. Separately, the
Multi-Stakeholder Rice Producers and Marketers Association (MSRPMA) in Ghana has urged the government
to step up efforts to increase rice production and reduce imports in the country, according to local sources.
The Ebola outbreak in western Africa has caused delays to Liberias rice imports, sending prices higher.
The Bank of Industries in Nigeria is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development (MARD) to provide N13 billion (about $79 million) in rice intervention fund to help boost rice
production in the country.
Egypt will lift its ban on rice exports in MY 2014-15, according to Bloomberg.

Thailand issued a tender a to sell about 140,000 tons rice in mid-September, but manage to sell about only
70,000 tons rice, according to Reuters.It was the second tender after the military took power in May. In first
tender, which issued in August, Thailand offered 167,000 tons of rice, but the Ministry could sell only 73,000
tons as bids received were lower than the prescribed floor price.The government of Thailand aimed to sell about


100,000 tons rice each month from their stocks. Thailand is holding an estimated 18 million tons of rice in their
warehouses, in which about 4 million tons is expected to be missing or rotten.The government says it will
evaluate the quantity and quality of rice stocks by October and will announce a plan on how to sell the rice
stocks to make up for losses incurred by the previous government, senior officials said.

Futures Finish Week with Gains as Market Appears
to Put in Long-Term Low around $12.200 Earlier
this Month
Chicago rough rice futures for Nov delivery settled 11 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $12.815 per
cwt (about $283 per ton). Rough rice futures shot over 20 cents per cwt (about $4 per ton) higher immediately
upon the opening of floor trading this morning, but as the day wore on prices pulled back and traded mostly
sideways near previously mentioned resistance around $12.800-$12.820 per cwt (about $282-$283 per ton) for
the rest of the session. The market appears to have gotten a boost from a positive turn on the chart as prices
climbed off of Mondays low of $12.540 per cwt (about $276 per ton).
Although the market was unable to hold the sessions high they did manage to climb 12 cents per cwt (about $3
per ton) from Mondays opening price of $12.695 per cwt (about $280 per ton). The other grains were mostly
lower today with only wheat managing to close a tick higher while soy and corn fell. Soybeans closed about
1.3% lower at $9.1025 per bushel; wheat finished about 0.1% higher at $4.7425 per bushel, and corn finished
the day about 0.9% lower at $3.2300 per bushel.U.S. stocks rose on Friday, rebounding after Wall Street's
hardest knock in nearly two months, as the government raised its estimate of economic growth in the second
quarter and consumer sentiment rose in September.
Data from the Commerce Department had gross domestic product increasing at a revised 4.6% annualized rate,
up from the prior estimate of 4.2%, and in line with expectations. The Thomson Reuters/University of
Michigan's final read on consumer sentiment climbed to 84.6 in September from 82.5 the month before. After a
105-point spike, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was more recently up 92.35 points, or 0.6%, at 17,038.15.
The S&P 500 added 7.61 points, or 0.4%, to 1,973.60, with energy and technology the best performing and
utilities and health care and consumer staples the greatest laggards among its 10 major sectors. The Nasdaq
gained 17.98 points, or 0.4%, to 4,484.73. Gold is trading about 0.6% lower, crude oil is seen trading about
1.2% higher, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.5% higher at about 1:00pm Chicago time.
