B. Settings
Place
1. United States
The kings of steel, of petroleum, and all the other kings of the United
States have always in a high degree excited my power of imagination.
2. The Billionaires House
The furnishing of the room in which he received me had nothing
unusually luxurious about it.

Time
Unspecified

Weather Conditions
Unspecified

Social Conditions
The Billionaire story portrayed the contrast condition between rich and
poor people. There were farmers which also portrayed the economical and
social condition of non-billionaire/poor people on that place at that time.

Mood or Atmosphere
The mood was bright and normal, as its a slice of life story.

C. Point of View

First Person
The story is told by I as the protagonist and He as the characters who
interacts closely with I.

D. Plot

Kinds of Plot
The Billionaire has Linear Plot because the story moves with the natural
sequence of events and the actions are arranged sequentially.

Five Stages of Plot
1. Introduction
The story started with Is definition and thoughts of rich people. This
went far for ten paragraphs until at the eleventh paragraph readers
would know that I is inside Hes house.

2. Rising Action
The story got intense right after the conversation between I and He
started. There were so many Is statement about rich people got
dispelled by He. He made unexpected answers responding all of
Is questions.

3. Climax
The climax happen after I said that He is a counterfeiter. That
really made He shook, offended, and angry a bit.

4. Falling Action
The story lower its intense after I asked how He got his money and
He calmly explained it.

5. Denouement
It ended with a good twist. After I asked Are the farmers satisfied
with it?, He answered Not all, I believe. But they say that the
people are never satisfied. There are always odd characters who want
still more . . ." without realizing that he is also one of that never be
satisfied human.

Conflict
1. Internal
Man Vs. Self
I started the story with him talking to himself about what rich
people is, and convincing himself if his thoughts are true.
2. External
Man Vs. Man
In the middle of story, I offended He with his word
(counterfeiter) and there is a little conflict among them after that.

THE STEREOTYPES TOWARD RICH PEOPLE ACCORDING TO COMMONERS
IN UNITED STATES AND INDONESIA

1. Background
Writer Maxim Gorky was born Aleksey Maksimovich Peshkov on
March 28, 1868, in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Born into poverty, his assumed
name, Gorky, means "bitter". By that information, we can assumed the reason
why he wrote a lot stories about the lower depths of society.
One of Maxim Gorkiy short stories, The Billionaire, caught my
attention. The Billionaire is a short story which focusing at main characters
opinion and thoughts of rich people; what things they eat, what do they actually
do, how is their house, where can they get a lot of money, etc, and he simply
generalize all rich people with the stereotypes; luxurious, greedy, wearing all
expensive things, big house, eat a lot of tasteful meat, and other something like
that.
Bringing the case of the stereotypes of rich people in the story, which is
taken place in United States, I am interested to compare the similarity of this
case to Indonesia.

2. Analysis
A stereotype is a thought that may be adopted about specific types of
individuals or certain ways of doing things. These thoughts or beliefs may or
may not accurately reflect reality. Another source stated a stereotype is a
simplified generalization about members of a group.
