FOR REACTION PAPER: THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

1. Describe and differentiate culture, values and discipline.
Culture is a defining feature of a person's identity, contributing to how they
see themselves and the groups with which they identify. It develops and changes
as the belief and ways of life of different groups adapt under other cultural
influences. Values refer to stable life goals that people have. They are
established throughout ones life as a result of life experiences and tend to be
relatively stable. It affects the type of decisions they make, how they perceive
their environment, and their actual behaviors. Discipline is a pattern of behavior
where you choose to do what you know you should do, rather than what you
want to do. It is the assertion of willpower over more basic desires and is
synonymous with self-control.

2. How can a work environment affect the formation of a persons values?
Though our values are constant and stable, it can be affected and
changed depending on the work environment. Different demands call forth
different aspect of one's values. We will face challenges and make choices that
will cause us to second-guess our judgments, test our values and ethics. We're
going to learn how to adapt to it and change ourselves thinking it's for the better.
Because of the new environment, we wanted to fit in the group, do everything
just to meet all their expectations and prove that we can stand out without
realizing that we are already changing, either good or bad.

3. Describe Andys relevant experiences and what learnings can you apply
to your internship next semester?
There are many relevant experiences and learning Andy had in her job
and I know I can apply them to my internship next semester. As I am new to the
organization, I should learn not to say no to every task given to me. I should be
patient, optimistic, and persistent in work like Andy. Though she failed many
times, deal with the work pressure and the impassive attitude of her boss, she
did not give up. Andy seeks the help of Nigel to guide and teach her. As an
intern, I should build rapport to other employees so they can also guide me in the
workplace and I can approach someone when I dont understand something.
Andys creativity and resourcefulness was also tested when she was asked to
obtain a copy of the unpublished Harry Potter novel. It seemed impossible given
a short period of time but she managed to have them. Whatever job or task is
assigned to me, whether it is simple, hard or seems impossible, I should always
try my best.

4. Cite the importance of values, discipline and culture to you as an
individual.
As an individual, values are important to me because it helps me stay
motivated. It serves as a guiding principle for me and in finding my purpose in
life. It provides a strong foundation to make life easier and to live life to its fullest.
To stay motivated, I need the discipline that gives me strength to withstand all the
hardships and difficulties in life. Having discipline is important because it makes
me have the initiative to persevere and push myself to do better. I can gain the
respect I deserve from the people around me and become successful. Culture
plays an important role in shaping the principles of every individuals life. It has a
deep impact on our attitude towards life. It gives us a unique identity. It prepares

and teaches us for a group life. It provides opportunities for the development of
personality and sets limits on its growth.

5. What life lessons were you able to adopt from the movie?
Someday we will get to a point where we will face challenges and need to
make a decision and we need to try our best to get through them. We will deal
many different kinds of person and not all of them can be easily pleased and give
us the respect that we deserve. It will take time and it will test our patience so we
shouldnt give up easily. We cant always get something we want in an easy way
out because we need to work hard for it, but it doesnt mean that we can
compromise our morals, hurt our friends especially our loved ones, and change
who we are and impress everyone. Going through hardships will toughen us up
as we grow and learn more about ourselves as an individual. We should be
guided by our values and dont lose sight of who we are. We should hold on to
our core values, listen to our heart and well be able to survive the corporate
culture.

6. Why do you think the movie was entitled The Devil Wears Prada?
I think the title was pertaining to the Editor in Chief or Runway magazine,
Miranda, who was considered the Devil in their office. She uses her power and
places fear in her employees using threats and intimidation. She makes all
decisions without regard to the idea of the employees. She has no concern for
them and does anything she wants. She may look very classy, elegant, wearing
expensive dresses but behind those clothing is a lost and miserable woman who
is obsessed with success and fame. When it came to the point where she needs
to fight for her position, she didnt care if Nigel would get hurt for expecting that
he will get the position, just to make sure she will still be part of the Runway
magazine.
