Teleflex Canada:

With the purchase of Capilano Engineering in 1974, a small machine shop in
Vancouver, which was developing hydraulic steering systems for boats, they started
Teleflex Canada. Teleflex Canada is based in Richmond, British Columbia, in the
metropolitan Vancouver area. And with the tremendous internal development, it reached
at the average growth rate of 20% per year, with incredible total sales of $160 million, in
2004. At the early period of Teleflex Canada, they focused on developing variety
products utilizing hydraulic and thermal technologies.

Marine and Hydraulic System:

Teleflex Canada had realized that, mechanical steering would become obsolete,
because of the lack of comfort ability and safety, but marine engines were getting
powerful and the demand was getting higher. They started designed their products,
those enabled more comfortable control of pleasure boats.

Its main hydraulic steering systems are
Sea Star,
Sea Star Pro
Bay Star.

These three products fundamentally changed the marine steering industry, and was
able to capture a huge market share of 95% in North America and 50% share in
markets outside the continent.

After the success of hydraulic system, they diversified their business by entering into
energy field. In 1990, they purchase a company, named Cummins and started
developed Pro heat vehicle heater product line. This technology was adapted to create
cook stoves, called Modern Burner Units, for using it in the Army field kitchens. And by
1999, they produced 10,000 MBUs per year for military purpose.

Development of the Sea star and energy product:

Teleflex Canada always tried to come up with a new or developed system. And with this
thought, in 1978, Teleflex Canada introduced a developed version, and named it
Syten. Syten competed against low-priced mechanical steering systems, and became
the worlds first low cost hydraulic steering system.

In 1989, they introduced another low cost steering system, called Sea Star. And this
new sea star was 30% cheaper to produce and 18% more efficient than the older Sea
star. Eventually, in 1993, they introduced Sea star Pro, and in 2002, Bay Star.

In 1992, an auxiliary power and climate control system for trucks and buses was
introduced by Teleflex. They named it Pro Heat. They were able to figure out the
demand for a product that could be used to heat trucks and was more fuel-efficient. And
Pro Heat was the first truck heater. Along with the truck heater, they developed several
products, including, a heater for tents for military, which led to the development of the
MBU. Harrold Copping, the CEO, of Teleflex Canada sort out that, The U.S Army liked
that product, and started using. Harrold found another chance to capture the market,
what they always wanted to do.

Though there were some down wards going in the market, while developing the
products, they never gave up innovating. And this helped them in the long run to
capture the market.

Teleflex Canada Culture:

Harold Copping, the CEO of Teleflex Canada, has maintained such a culture inside the
company, which increases the willingness to work together. The CEO has given the
worker the freedom for innovation. Harold had motivated the worker in such a way, that
they always think something unique so that, they can be the leader always. At the early
stage of the company, they were highly disciplined and well managed. They tried to
build the organization around a spirit of independence and risk- taking with a passionate
group of people. They brought a culture in which, each and every employee has the
right to generate ideas, and allows people to question everything.
