Fish farming involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures, usually for food. A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species' natural numbers is generally referred to as a fish hatchery. Worldwide, the most important fish species used in fish farming are carp, salmon, tilapia and catfish. CONTENTS CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF AQUARIUM In 1853, an English naturalist used the term aquarium for the first time. Aquarium keeping is a hobby of people world oven. It is a skill that involves both art and science. The very sight of aquarium imparts beauty and peace of mind. CONSTRUCTION OF HOME AQUARIUM Generally, small sized aquaria are set up at homes with manageable dimensions. The aquarium tanks are made up of glass fixed on metal frames. Nowadays tanks are made completely of glass without metallic attachments. The glass sheets of different thickness are available varying from 4 mm to 10 mm thickness. The glass is purchased only after fixing the tank capacity. Aquarium tanks are available in different sizes. For example tanks , of 27 litres, 54 litres, etc. can be purchased directly. The tanks can be ' assembled properly with the help of an expert in this field. The length of the aquarium tank is an important factor which must be twice the depth. The sharp edges of glass are made even with fine grain sand paper. The glass sheets can be cleaned with alcohol. Keep fingers away from the pointed edges of glass. The glasses are joined with the help of silicon glue. "The base of the tank (glass sheet) is placed in an even surface first and the four sides (one front, one back, two sides) are fastened to it with glue. . Utmost care should be taken to fix the glass in position without leaning to : 2 I a particular side. While making aquarium tanks, it should be kept in mind that a slightest pressure applied may cause leakage. So, the glue should reach every nook and corners. The tank is kept for drying for a few days and afterwards the excess glue can be removed from sides of the tank. To check the possibility of leakage fill the tank with water and allow it to stand overnight. It can be repeated for a couple of times. lf there is no leakage the tank is ready for aquarium setting. SETTING UP OF AQUARIUMFRESHWATER The home aquarium should be placed at a sensible height from the ground. Ideal height is 90 cm up from the floor; which is the eye-level position. The interior of the tank is wiped off and it is kept in position on a table. Enough room should be left to get the electric plugs, to fit an external filter and to house the top light. There should be enough space to move around to service the tank. The following things are to be kept in mind while setting up an aquarium Bed laying: This process is actually the preparation of aquarium floor . This provides a natural environment to the fish. The bed of gravel and sand serves as a medium for rooting plants. The material used for making bed iv should be of 4-6 mm in size. The coarse sand, rocks, pebbles, marble chips, etc. can be used for the purpose. These are to be thoroughly washed before 4 putting into the tank. Hiding places may be given to fish using small PVC pipes or with those decorative things available in shops. The sand and pebbles should be laid gently in a slopping manner. The sand should not be dumped in a particular area. Aquarium plants: For the shelter and shade, plants are fixed in aquarium tank. They also provide sanctuary to the fish. Some egg-laying fish may lay sticky eggs, attached to the leaves of aquarium plants. Some lother fishes consume the leaves of such plants. The plants during photosynthesis, absorb CO 2 and given out O 2 . There are tall rooted plants like Vullisnariu and floating plants. While planting and decorating the tank, it should be make sure that plants are free from contaminants..The plants gcan be kept in small flower pots in cases of uprooting by fish. The common plants used are Vallisnariu spiralis, Echinodcrus, Elodea densa, etc. Ornamental Objects: The aquarium tank can be made beautiful to the viewer's eye using ornamental objects or decoratives. These objects Lshould not do any harm to fish. Rocks, stones, plastic toys, designed aerators, etc. could be used. To improve the appearance, coloured scenery can be pasted to the back side. Whenever the ornamental objects are used, they should be coated with harmless non-toxic paint The chemicals may interfere with the health of the fish. Overcrowding of ornamental objects should be avoided since they interfere with the movement of fish. CONCLUSION Aquarium construction is a model for living corner .For effective learning use Aquarium construction. It is helping for Science learning. This provide a real environment .
