BOSC,
It is my favorite time of year! Fall
is just around the corner and soon it
will be sweater weather (I hope!).
The warm colors and decorations
are two of my favorite things about
fall. I always look forward to Fall
festivities. There is so much going
on in the Barksdale community this
Fall. A couple of things... Oktober-
Fest is October 3rd and is always a
great time. Also, the annual basket
auction is October 8th. What a
great way to support the Hap House
and other charitable endeavors of
the BOSC. It is not too late to sign
up to sponsor a basket for the bas-
ket auction. Donations will be ac-
cepted until October 3rd. Please
consider asking your unit to donate
a basket. If you have any questions
about the basket auction or would
like to donate a basket, please con-
tact Kari Truskett or myself
at social.bosc@gmail.com.
Not only do we have the annual
basket auction right around the
corner, but BOSC has some fun
socials coming up. November is
Bunko! You wont want to miss the
Glam Pink and Black themed
bunko social. Make sure to dress in
pink and black. December's social
is a fashion show themed social.
We will be featuring fashion do's
and don'ts as well as some great
looks for the colder months. Want
to be a fashion do or don't? Want to
be styled by our very own personal
stylist Emily Meister? Send us an
email to social.bosc@gmail.com.
We will also be featuring quick hair
and make-up tricks. We are so ex-
cited about our upcoming socials
and hope you all will be as well.
Since it's the all things pumpkin
time of year, I thought I would
share one of my favorite fall reci-
pes with you. It is a super simple
recipe that is always a hit! When I
think of Fall, I always think of
comfort food and this is for sure a
comfort food.
Until next month,
Amy Waring
Smashing Pumpkin Bars with
Cream Cheese Frosting
Bars:
4 eggs
1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
15 -ounce can pumpkin
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
*See variations
Icing:
8 -ounce package cream cheese,
softened
1/2 cup butter or margarine, sof-
tened
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Using an electric mixer at medium
speed, combine the eggs, sugar, oil
and pumpkin until light and fluffy.
Stir together the flour, baking
powder, cinnamon, salt and baking
soda. Add the dry ingredients to
the pumpkin mixture and mix at
low speed until thoroughly com-
bined and the batter is smooth.
Spread the batter into a greased 13
by 10-inch baking pan. Bake for
30 minutes. Let cool completely
before frosting. Cut into bars.

To make the icing: Combine the
cream cheese and butter in a me-
dium bowl with an electric mixer
until smooth. Add the sugar and
mix at low speed until combined.
Stir in the vanilla and mix again.
Spread on cooled pumpkin bars.

*Variations: I do sometimes soak
some raisins in rum for about 30
minutes then drain them and use
them in the batter and I will also
sometimes add pecans as well to
the bars.

During our September Social we were honored to have
Sarah Ardis (Donor and Volunteer Relations Manager) come
and speak to us regarding the needs of the Shreveport/Bossier
Mission. She reminded us of all the great services the mission
does in order to help the homeless in our area:
Charity of the Month
Emergency Shelter
Food and Clothing
Addiction Recovery Training
Social Services
Counseling & Christian guidance
Domestic Violence Support
Anger Management Classes
Evening Worship Services
Free Medical/Dental Care
Thank you to all our members who generously donated items last month. Sarah left with a car
load of items fulfilling immediate needs of the shelter. We will still be collecting donations at
the October shelter for all that would like to bring them. Some items they are in need of this
month would be:
Hoodies/sweatshirts or light jackets/sweaters and socks for men women and children
(I would think that as long as they are in good condition that used hoodies/jackets/sweaters
would be great)
Deodorant - solid and gel (mostly for men, but, women, too)
Mens boxers/underwear
Mens t-shirts
Mens razors
Shower gel/bath soap
Cold medicine
Womens personal hygiene products

If you would like to purchase a holiday gift to brighten a person's spirit they have a
mission tree in Dec and will have cards available to pick up with a gift idea for under
$30.

Also Sarah would like to extend a warm welcome to anyone that would like a tour of the shel-
ter. They are open Mon-Friday from 830am to 4:30 pm. If you would like to donate your time/talent
the shelter is always looking for volunteers. Or you can contact the mission for more information
at Phone: (318) 227-2868. Sarah Ardis can be reached at ext 104.

When did you arrive at Barksdale? July 2014
What squadron/ group are you associated with? 2nd BW
Who is in your immediate family? (Feel free to include little fur members) My wife Kristin
and our two daughters Sloan and Slater
Where is your hometown? Kansas City, Mo.
What do you like best about the Barksdale, Shreveport & Bossier area? Definitely the peo-
ple that I have met both from base and from the community
Where have you been stationed before? Whiteman AFB (twice), Langley AFB and Washing-
ton D.C.
What is something that most people dont know about you? I was the first alternate for the
US Olympic swim team in 1992
What has been one of the challenging aspects of military life? For me finding the balance
between being my own person and being a Commanders wife has been and continues to be
very challenging for me. I believe that it is very important to always maintain a certain level
of individual autonomy in a healthy relationship but being a supportive spouse in the US mili-
tary doesnt necessarily always make it easy to accomplish that. Having great friends both
on and off base helps a lot and I am so thankful for all of the wonderful friends that I have
met so far at BAFB!
What has been one of the best aspects of military life? Honestly the people that I have
met at all of our different duty stations and through military functions. I love to meet new
people who have had different life experiences than me and who challenge my way of think-
ing. It helps me grow as a person and increases my awareness and tolerance for everyones
unique differences. I have met some of the most honest, sincere, caring people through the
Air Force. We are truly blessed with incredible family and friends.
