Letter from the Program Director
Greetings
from Cynthia Hutchison
Healing Touch Program Director
Welcome to the April Issue of Energy Magazine
Happy Spring to those of you in the Northern Hemisphere!
Spring is about birth, hope, and new life, but this issue of En-
ergy Magazine includes stories about the winter of life, those
golden years when the physical life forces are naturally waning.
Yet, many older folks relate to feeling birth, hope and new life,
not necessarily in relation to physicality, but to all aspects of
our life force and spiritual selves. Aging and death are a natural
progression of human life, but those of us involved with Heal-
ing Touch and holistic health care know that quality of life can
be signicantly impacted through conscious thoughts, attitudes
and deeds, including participating in energy healing. Those of
us - Healing Touch Practitioners - who are in our later years
of life often note how doing energy work for many years has
inuenced us to experience healthier aging compared to many
of our same-age cohorts. (Some of us even joke about HT be-
ing an elixir of life like the fountain of youth.) As practitioners,
we are also aware that through our sharing HT with our elderly
friends, family and clients, we can support their physical health,
emotional balance, mental clarity and alignment with Spirit. It is
indeed a blessing to both give and receive Healing Touch!
In 2003 when Janet Mentgen ofcially invited me to mentor
under her as HTPs next Program Director, she asked me what
my goals were for HTP. One of them was to bring HT to every
long term health care facility in the United States and in any
country that wanted HT. With an extended history of long term
care nursing practice (see my article in this issue), I knew that
part of my lifes calling was to serve our elderly population.
Janet introduced me to Howard Batie, who created a compre-
hensive HT for Long Term Care Facilities program in the state
of Washington with Janets blessings. Howard gifted his work to
HTP, and we have set our intention to adapt it for a national
model that could
be implemented
to improve the quality of life for those working / living in long
term care facilities. We are hoping that 2009 will be the year
where HTP can test a model for bringing HT into the daily lives
of senior living facilities. Just imagine your local LTC facility
holding HT classes for the community, training staff, volunteers
and families, and even supporting their interested residents
who want to learn HT. As Bernie Clarks article in this issue
validates, we are never too old to learn (Healing Touch)! We
would love to hear your success stories related to your experi-
ences of teaching or practicing HT in nursing homes or senior
living communities.
This issue not only has inspiring articles about HT and the
Elderly, but includes the usual array of interesting features,
including a report / link to the recent Washington, D.C., Summit
on Integrative Medicine; EMs quarterly article on HT Research;
and a super fun one-page yer to help promote HT class atten-
dance in your local communities!
I think back to my experience as a hospice nurse and how
precious it was to share HT sacred time and energy with my el-
derly clients who were getting ready to cross the threshold. May
we all be blessed to receive Healing Touch (or something like it)
when we are getting ready to leave this world.
Spring blessings to us all,
Cynthia

Healing Touch Worldwide Foundation happily
announces Hospice by the Sea (HBTS) as our
2009 grant recipient. Hospice by the Sea is a not-for-
prot, community-based provider of quality hospice, palliative
care, and home health services. The mission of HBTS is to
provide skilled medical care and comfort to patients with life-
limiting illnesses and emotional, social, and spiritual support
to patients as well as their families regardless of age, race,
creed, diagnosis, or ability to pay. They are fully licensed, cer-
tied by Medicare and Medicaid, and accredited by the Joint
Commission, a gold standard for patient care. Their services
are guided by four cornerstones - Integrity, Excellence, Ac-
countability and Teamwork.
Your donations are supporting their project, Caring for Our
Caregivers. This project will pilot a program that combines
self-care education and Healing Touch to reduce the impact of
stress and compassion fatigue among nurses in their inpatient
Hospice Care Center. Recently, a Florida State University study
found that 80% of hospice and palliative care nurses were at
moderate to high risk for burnout and compassion fatigue re-
sulting in increased absenteeism, a signicantly compromised
sense of well-being and an exodus from the profession. Without
your support, the Foundation would not be able to fund the
expenses needed to provide Healing Touch Therapy to HBTSs
professional caregiver staff.

Its Tuesday afternoon about three-fteen
and we begin to gather in a large room
with chairs forming a circle. By three-thirty
there are 10 to 20 seniors from our retire-
ment community present plus some Healing
Touch people from the wider community and
we begin by sharing our current joys and
concernsa new grandchild, a 60th wedding
anniversary, an aching knee or shoulder, or
an upcoming surgery. As we settle I lower the
lights, start meditative music and we begin by
balancing the energy eld and centers, then
extending our hand toward the center of the
circle to send healing energy to those named
in word or in thought. By this time it is about
three-forty-ve and we focus on bringing
healing energy to our concerns of the day.
Our group is uid and often we have a new member who comes
with a friend or on their own to see what we are about. Empha-
sis after meditation is focused on energy treatments related to
what the individuals bring to the circle. Physical aches and pains
usually respond to voice guided Basic Healing Touch Sequence
using Magnetic Clearing, Ultrasound, and/or Pain Drain. Mind
Clearing is often selected if the entire group seems upset by
some recent happening such as 911 which occurred on a Tues-
day morning in 2001. That day we all arrived in great stress,
concerned about what was to those happening those involved.
One popular technique is a problem solving measure where
the pendulum is used right after meditation to demonstrate the
openness and balance of each participant. Then each individ-
ual thinks of a serious personal problem and a second pendu-
lum assessment is taken to demonstrate how this affects the
energy centers. The nature of the problems is not shared orally
unless someone wants to share or the day is one of a broader
community nature. As we are thinking of our individual problem
a HT technique such as the Self-Chakra Connection is voice
guided while thinking of the problem and at the end the assess-
ment is repeated, usually demonstrating a return to openness
and balance. We discuss the differences of how we felt before
and after the intervention and thus begin to learn how to use
self-care techniques when we feel out of balance. All are en-
couraged to try these techniques during the week when feeling
overwhelmed.
This hour long weekly circle of caring began about twelve
years ago when I moved to Panorama City in Lacey, WA, a
not-for-prot retirement community of about 1200 seniors. I was
already a certied practitioner and instructor and was trying to
nd ways to share Healing Touch with my fellow retirees. I rst
contacted the leader of our Convalescent and Rehab Center
(nursing home), but those in charge had difculties since I was
a volunteer who wanted to do more than pour tea. I was allowed
to visit friends for HT sessions but could not nd a way to make
it a part of the ongoing care. I saw individuals in my home and
visited in theirs - but felt we could do more.
A Healing,
Caring Circle
for Seniors

A Healing, Caring Circle
continued on page 11
With the support of some interested friends we decided to hold
a weekly clinic -- a healing circle -- and were able to use a room
at no charge in the basement of one of our large apartment
buildings. A second room, provided for individual sessions and
table storage, houses our library. Healing Touch is now spon-
sored by the Health and Wellness Committee of Panoramas
Resident Council of which I am a member and is listed in our
community monthly calendar.
In addition to our one hour weekly group circle, we have a year-
ly Introduction to Healing Touch for our retirement community
which has reached several hundred seniors over the past 12
years. With the help of Certied Practitioners and HT Appren-
tices from the broader community where I teach Levels 1 and
2, we offer individual sessions, support those facing surgery,
and are often there at the end of life. A brochure states that the
cost of individual sessions is by donation to the Healing Touch
Worldwide Foundation or to the individual practitioner. Individu-
als are also referred to practitioners in the community. Several
years ago I offered a Level 1 course to the interested seniors at
the cost of a certicate and now many of the participants offer
HT to family and friends
Over the past 10 years, I have developed a self-care booklet,
Energy Wellness, which has HT as the center piece. Janet
Mentgen reviewed and approved the rst editions, Mary Jo
Bulbrook allowed me to use two of her meditations, and I
have added other techniques such as Gary Craigs Emotional
Freedom Technique to later editions. The third revision was
approved by Healing Touch Program in 2006 and is available to
group participants at the cost of copy, usually around $5.00. A
new edition will soon include Sharon Scandrett-Hibdons Ener-
getic First Aid with permission from Healing Touch Programs
Energy Magazine.

This describes our program but perhaps does not reect what
is happening within each of us as we participate. I have found
that reections, dreams, and quiet moments allow me to create
Haiku expressing how I feel about our group.
Reflections
On Healing Touch/Energetic Healing Group Clinic
Held May 2, 2000
My Dream the morning of May 3, 2000 was of a yellow
rose opening to the light leading me to reect back to the
clinic held the day before.
Our group, like a rose,
Opens to the light, sharing
Stories for healing.
We come together
And form a circle.
Opening our hearts to spirit
As we heal ourselves
Friends are placed in the center
To receive healing.
After a Blessing
We leave, knowing each received
According to need.

A Healing, Caring Circle
My work with Healing, Caring Circles for Seniors has been
fostered by my earlier professional life in child development
and maternal-child health nursing based on the work of Erik
Erickson (1982) and his wife Joan Erickson (1997); the pre-
sentation at conference by Jean Watson and her writings on
caring (1985); and most recently Dorothea Hover-Kramers new
book related to aging, creativity, and health (2008). At age 80,
I feel energized, creative, and full of joy to be able to participate
weekly with a group of peers and continue to nd new ways to
share energy healing.

Imagine, having the opportunity to be
nurtured and loved by a group of elders. As
the years pass different elders appear --
continuing to nurture and forever loving -- as
they gift you with their stories of life. All the
while you ourish as they give meaning to
your life. As each elder comes and goes they
leave their loving imprint on your heart that
you will carry with you all the days of your
life. So goes the story of my life as a nurse in
Long-Term Care.
By the time I got involved with Healing Touch it seemed as
though it was a natural progression to provide care for my
beloved elders. It was my turn to return the loving care I re-
ceived from so many elders in a special way. Over the years I
have become very astute in managing the clinical aspects of
the elderly. In fact, as my gerontological knowledge base and
clinical skills grew so did my responsibilities. However, in 2001 I
was beginning to feel that something was missing from my work
with the elderly.

When I completed Level 1 Healing Touch in April 2001 I knew
that I had found what was missing from my practice. I found that
Healing Touch lled a gap in my care of the elderly and allowed
me to provide care that was heart centered and sacred. I had
nally found a way to give the most loving care I could possibly
give to my elders through Healing Touch.

I have incorporated Healing Touch in my daily practice with the
elders in my care at The Village HealthCare Center. I have used
either one or a combination of Ultrasound, Magnetic Passes
Hands in Motion and Hands Still, Pain Drain or Laser tech-
niques to help in pain management and incision site repair with
recent hip or knee replacements. In addition, I use Magnetic
Passes Hands in Motion and Hands Still or Mind Clearing with
those who are experiencing an increase in anxiety or agitation.
The Healing Touch technique that I use is contingent on time,
level of pain or anxiety the resident is experiencing and/or indi-
vidual request for Healing Touch.

One of the most profound experiences I have had with Heal-
ing Touch was when I was performing a Chakra Spread with a
resident who had become a friend. In Long-Term Care develop-
ing close relationships with the elderly is common such was
the case with Glenda. Over a 10-year period Glenda had been
admitted to The Village HealthCare Center numerous times. I
watched her health decline with each admission and we both
knew with her admission in January 2007 - it would be her last.

I vividly remember the day when my nurses came to inform me
that Glenda was not doing well and had requested to see me. It
was the second day of our annual survey with the Department
of Health and a member of the survey team was in my ofce
requesting various nursing policies and procedures. My

own anxiety at that time was very high and I remember thinking
how am I going to calm down enough to be present for Glen-
da. I excused myself from the surveyor and immediately went
outside to the garden patio. I breathed in the fresh air and
looked around at the dormant garden and a thought struck
me that even in death there is the promise of life eternal.
Once I felt grounded and calm I returned to the building and
went to Glendas room. As I sat next to Glenda and held her
hand we both knew what was happening. I asked Glenda if she
wanted me to do Healing Touch and she nodded yes. By the
time I completed the Chakra Spread she seemed to be sleep-
ing very comfortably and not struggling to breathe. I sat next to
her again and simply held sacred space for her. After about 10
minutes Glenda began to stir and started mumbling something I
could not understand. I leaned in closer and asked her to repeat
what she said and she stated very softly will you hold me. I
gently got Glenda into a sitting position on the edge of the bed
and sat next to her. I put my arms around her as her head fell
onto my shoulder, holding her close to me for about 5 minutes
before laying her back down. As I held her I knew that it would
be the last time. Imagine having an opportunity to spend such a
precious moment with someone you love. Glenda transitioned
early the next morning.

Long-Term Care in 1976, becoming a certied nursing assistant

families she managed to put herself through nursing school and
became a Registered Nurse in 1985. Her background includes
extensive training in rehabilitation nursing. In her work with the
elder community she feels that Healing Touch has added depth
and dimension to her nursing practice in a very profound way.

The Center of My Universe:
I was honored to participate in the Summit on Integrative
Medicine and the Health of the Public on February 25-27,
2009 in Washington, DC as a volunteer representing Healing
Touch Program. Jointly sponsored by the Institute of Medicine
(www.IOM@edu.org) and The Bravewell Collaborative (www.
bravewellcollaborative.org), over 500 public and private sector
experts were invited to discuss policy and to advise the Obama
administration regarding changes to Healthcare reform. In the
tradition of the IOM which serves as an adviser to the nation to
improve health, this summit was convened to discuss issues in
an open environment that facilitated evidenced based dialogue.
A full video webcast of the Institute of Medicines Summit
on Integrative Medicine and the Health of the Public is now
available to view at http://www.imsummitwebcast.org.
Panels were rich and deep in the exploration of models of
integrating health and healthcare, in research, the workforce,
education and economics. It did not take long for the leaders of
the dialogue to embrace INTEGRATIVE HEALTHCARE as the
term to call this new perspective that centers on Wellness and
Prevention.
Mimi Guarneri, MD, author of The Heart Speaks, represented
Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine as one of the eight cen-

Summit on Integrative...
Motivated by the ground swell of professional interest in creat-
ing a culture of wellness, I ask that you write your United States
Senators http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/
senators_cfm.cfm and Representatives https://writerep.house.
gov/writerep/welcome.shtml to let them know of your support
to reform our Health Care System to one that promotes health
through Prevention and Wellness. Sen. Harkin specically re-
quested that the American public do this.
For more insight regarding the Senate committee on Health,
Education, Labor and Pensions: Senators Harkin, along with
Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland and Senator Mike Enzi
of Wyoming heard from four leading physicians: Mehmet Oz,
Dean Ornish, Andrew Weil and Mark Hyman who presented
testimony on behalf of Integrative Medicine. (http://help.senate.

There are many people who touch our lives
in a very special way. This article continues
the story about the early days of the Healing
Touch Program and its founder Janet Ment-
gen who impacted my life with her wisdom,
leadership, and heart centered approach to
energy healing.

My Story
I remember the day I heard that Janet Mentgen and Dorothea
Hover-Kramer would be teaching a Level 1 Healing Touch
class in Atlanta, Georgia, June 22-24, 1990. Following the Big
Divine nudge to attend, my good friend Kathy Sinnett, RN (now
HTCP/I) and I drove 750 miles from Michigan to Atlanta to at-
tend this workshop Our lives were changed forever.
I still remember the class as if it was yesterday.
Doing the techniques with mats on a very hard, uncarpeted
oor. No comfy treatment tables for us. (Ouch!)
Falling asleep during the Chakra lecture by Dr. Hover-
Kramer because I ate too much at lunch. (Dorothea -
honest! It had nothing to do with the excellent information
you presented.)
Taking copious notes because the HT Notebook was not in
existence.
Observing Janet, a woman of small stature, teaching but
at the same time being present in her quiet manner and
being aware of all thats going on. Today I would call that
total presence.
Armed with only a few handouts and my scribbled notes, I left
the class inspired because the seeds for energy healing were
planted rmly by both of these gracious instructors. I imme-
diately began practicing the methods; wanting to learn more.
Thats how Janet came into my life.
For the purpose of providing reections about the early days
of the Healing Touch Program, I need to briey mention my
involvement with HT as I have walked hand in hand with Janet
from 1990 until her death in 2005.
And the Journey Begins
Taking countless classes all over the country, (many times
Kathy Sinnett and I got lost trying to get to them), I became the
5th Healing Touch Certied Practitioner and 10th Healing Touch
Certied Instructor in 1993 granted through the American
Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA). I remember that Mildred
Freel, Ruth Johnston and Dorothea Hover-Kramer worked very
hard to develop the rst set of criteria for certication awarded
through AHNA.
In June 1994, I was asked to be on the AHNA Certication
Board, replacing Dorothea, which felt like awfully BIG shoes to
This monthly article, by one of our Elder Council Members, is spon-
sored by Healing Touch Program and Healing Touch Professional
Association. We are especially happy to bring these stories to you as
part of our 20th year celebration of Healing Touch Program. Our HT
Community is rich with practitioners and instructors who were with
Janet Mentgen when she created her Healing Touch Program. Many
remain active today - all have experiences and stories that contribute to
our Healing Touch Historical Roots.
HTP and HTPA have joined together to develop the historical
stories of Janet Mentgens Healing Touch Program by documenting
the memories and experiences of those that were in the rst classes,
attended the rst gatherings, witnessed the early growth and held the
Vision with Janet. They supported her and blazed the trail with & for her
and for those who came later. These individuals are the Elders.
Note: Because each Elder story is a unique personal memory back in
time, we recognize the potential challenge of accuracy; we appreciate,
accept and will publish corrections if needed.

Elder Wisdom
ll. (Actually Sharon ScandrettHibdon, using her motivational
tone of voice, convinced me to do it. Sharon was the President
of AHNA at the time and is currently the Chairperson of Healing
Touch Certication.)
I remember the challenges faced when AHNA was no longer
able to provide certication for the Healing Touch Educational
Program because they felt it was a conict of interest to certify
graduates of the program who were not nurses. Janet made the
decision to create a separate, autonomous certication panel.
AHNA endorsed the Healing Touch Program even though they
no longer participated as the certication body for graduates. I
was part of the process when Healing Touch International (HTI)
was created in 1996 to provide certication for the Healing
Touch Educational Program, and served 5 years on the HTI
Certication Board, helping to develop the new application and
implement the certication process along with Steve Anderson
and Millie Freel. Eventually I became qualied to teach all 5
levels of the Healing Touch Program.
I was there through good and trying times, joys and sorrows,
while many of the challenges were faced during the rapid devel-
opment of the Healing Touch Program. I observed both forward
and backward steps. Throughout this period of time, I came to
know Janet Mentgen as an instructor, leader, mentor, colleague
and friend.
Healing Touch & Healing Touch International
While serving on the HTI board, it felt to me like HTP and HTI
were operating as one heart with two arms and hands -- each
had a different purpose and a different job to do. After each
certication process period was completed, outcomes/feedback
were shared with Janet. Information was utilized to identify the
strengths and weakness in both the certication process and
the educational program. This feedback was necessary and
proved invaluable as it enabled both HTI and HTP to move for-
ward in continuous improvement and program effectiveness.
Early HT Memories in Michigan
I remember Janet Mentgen and Myra Tovey frequently coming
to Michigan to teach those early classes. Kathy Sinnett had
the ability to inspire a whole ock of folks to attend, therefore,
large classes were held in our area.

Healing Touch continued to grow throughout the country thanks
to those early students, dedicated coordinators, stimulating and
knowledgeable instructors and our highly motivated and inspira-
tional leader, Janet Mentgen. I also beneted from the words of
wisdom from other early instructors including Anne Day, Mary
Jo Bulbrook, Linda Smith, Dorothea Hover-Kramer, and Sharon
Scandrett-Hibdon.
Janet as a Healer and Teacher
Reections wouldnt be complete without a few cherished
memories of Janet. First and foremost, she was an effective
energy healer with the ability to see and sense energy. On
one occasion when Janet was at my home she observed a
red spike of energy protruding from the center of my sisters
forehead, extending eight feet into the room. Because of this
experience I learned the importance of working at the edge
of the pain ridge during a severe migraine headache. Janets
favorite advice was Follow the energy. As an instructor, Janet
had the ability to hold the interest of students and receive their
undivided attention at classes.
In Those Early Days, I Remember Janet...
Had a strong sense of purpose in bringing Healing Touch
to the world
Stayed focused on the vision - no matter what obstacles/
challenges crossed her path
Had a strong sense of commitment and responsibility
Was dedicated to teaching, developing and cultivating the
skills of others
Served humanity and was dedicated to true service.
One of Janets favorite authors, who inspired much of her work,
was Alice Bailey. The following is a wonderful quote from her
book, Serving Humanity, which reminds me of Janet:

Elder Wisdom
True service is the spontaneous outow of a loving heart and
an intelligent mind; it is the result of being in the right place and
staying there; it is produced by the inevitable inow of spiritual
force . . . Djwhal Khul
I feel that Janet was dedicated to serving humanity. She fol-
lowed her soul path with a loving heart, intelligent mind, and
knew she was in the right place and stayed there.
Often people ask me, Why am I in the Healing Touch Program?
Answer: Janet inspired me to help carry her vision forward. I
strongly feel I am following my soul path.

How would you respond if one of your patients/clients asked
you to teach him how to talk to God -- as did one of Judy Mil-
tons clients at the Veterans Administration (VA)? The man, who
held a Masters degree in Theology, was receiving treatment for
a brain tumor and seizures. Judy learned that this self-effacing
man came from a fundamentalist religious belief and was carry-
ing a heavy burden of guilt for not reading the Bible. Restricted
to a wheelchair, he had secluded himself from others and car-
ried his self-inicted shame alone.
This was only one of several boundary issues that have sur-
faced in Judys volunteer work at the VA where she is a re-
spected member of a fabulous team on the Skilled Nursing
Unit. At the weekly residents meetings, she is introduced as a
Healing Touch Practitioner but she is known by the patients as
the music lady because of the music she plays during treat-
ments. Judy commonly plays a Beverly Rieger CD during treat-
ments (composer of HTs well known song The Beloved) The
roommates love the music; feel healed by music. The team of
nurses, physicians, physical, recreation, respiratory, and oc-
cupational therapists will put names of patients on Judys list to
see for Healing Touch.
One humorous 90 year-old patient was in for a brief 2-3 week
stay. He was a very bright and proud man. His rst request
was, Dont they do any alternative work around here? Where
I come from you have choices of alternative therapies! Need-
less to say, his name was given to me rst thing. He responded
well which may have made his stay short. His roommate then
started asking for me. The Recreation therapists have made
her a sign to hang on the door handle when shes doing Heal-
ing Touch treatments. It reads, Healing Touch in Progress.
A woman patient stopped Judy after a Residents meeting want-
ing a treatment. She had such pain, anger, and fear in her face.
I spent quite a bit of time with her - getting to know her as well.
The initial treatment affected her profoundly and she went right
to sleep. The following week, I discovered a totally transformed
woman. Gone was the hardness in her face. It was replaced
with a gentleness, a sense of trust, and a spiritual glow.
When boundary issues and/or ethical practice concerns arise,
Judy always checks with the charge nurse and is always told
the same thing; Use your own good judgment. This has given
her a measure of freedom to respond to unusual requests, like
teach me how to talk to God. Judys rst guided response was
to have the patient listen to a guided meditation CD by a wom-
an healer she knows from a group she attends. Judy spends
one hour with this patient every week talking and doing energy

What brought you to Healing Touch? We listen to the stories at every workshop and marvel at the variety of
paths that have led us to the work. When the workshops come to an end with Level 5 we lose touch with
many of our classmates and the rest of their stories and especially lose touch with what follows after certi-
cation. Certication, of course, is only the beginning. Healing Touch changes our lives and together we are
changing the world. This column will present proles of these agents of change.

work and has observed his self-esteem increasing. The guy is
blossoming. Hes now helping other vets.
Judys favorite story involved a vet in his 80s who was in
end-stage hospice care, completely lucid and open to receiv-
ing Healing Touch. She noticed that he held his hands in a
Yoga position while she worked. His comment at the end of her
treatment was a puzzling, Youre not that bad. It was puzzling
until she discovered that he was a medical intuitive, a healer
trained by a Kahuna in Hawaii and in Shaman work in Mexico.
He voiced curiosity about whether he had lost his healing ability
and ended up doing some acupressure on Judy.
She describes their connection as full of spiritual acrobatics
including astralight when he wanted to check out the status
of his twin ame in Arizona to see if she was ready to make
their transition which would be done together. According to
this belief Judy explains, Twin ames, live parallel lives, the
twin always of the opposite sex to balance the Yin and Yang,
and they always transition together. When the time came, he
transitioned very fast and Judy believes he has become one of
her guides and that they have done healing work together in the
past. (Judys charge nurse is hereby nominated for an Angelic
award considering her empathy to the ethical issues Judy
brings her.)
The Recreation therapist couldnt believe it when
one vet accepted Judys intervention. He was
admitted for facial reconstruction and had no
nose, and was in pain from the tube draining bile.
I was so thrilled that my treatment made him feel
better. The pain was completely gone.
Judy retired from acute care nursing in 2008
where she did it all; handling an Aids unit in Santa
Clara, California before protocols, a Pediatric
chemo unit before protocols; always the one
called on to open a unit. She belongs to the Wild
Women of Vancouver who meet one Friday night
every month for a potluck dinner and exchanges.
Judy uses what she learns from other members
and their modalities to ne tune my intuitive
skills.
She is working to create a better balance between her private
practice, work at the VA, and fun times. An avid cyclist, she
and a friend like to get lost deliberately and use their pendu-
lums for direction about where to go. She also volunteers at the
Lelooska Cultural Center in Ariel, Washington on the road to
Mt. St. Helens. The Lelooskas are from a British Columbia tribe
who relocated in Washington and are known for their carved
transformational masks and dances. Their totems are famous
all over the world.

Sacred Powers: A Medical Intuitives Perspective
Nancy Weber, Medical Intuitive and Healer
A One-Day Workshop, August 3rd
Nancy Weber RN, works for the sherifs department in Morristown, NJ where she is the
resident psychic detective they call upon when all else fails. She is a nurse and a healer
who combines her work and believes that all of us have the ability to tap into our intuition
at the soul level to be of service to others.
This workshop is designed to enhance any healing modality. Encouraging ourselves to enter
into the presence of the divine light and stay aware of the fow of information we gather, enhances all our healing
work. Nancy explains that we will explore the psychic senses with the knowledge that these senses are simply the
souls awareness of life and when we avail ourselves we increase all possibilities. Hands on techniques suitable for all
healing work, applied kinesiolgy, aura viewing, art, music and other techniques will be explored. Nancy will teach us
how to get in touch with the core essence of a persons soul as they present to us with healing issues. This is some-
thing she says we all have the ability to do - - it is a matter of connecting into our own souls light. Register Here.
Physics and Spiritual Healing For Healers
Vicki Slater, Healer and Educator
A Two-Day Post Conference Workshop, August 3 - 4
Vicki Slater, RN, PhD took her frst Healing Touch class in 1989 and wondered aloud how it
really works! So she found out by studying physics, electrical engineering and science. She
is now a published author on the subject and has been a keynote speaker on the physics of
healing for a number of organizations. When asked about this particular presentation, Vicki
had this to say. Being a true healer goes beyond technique. It is about reaching into the
Mysteries and letting the Mystery do the work - - transcending human abilities. This two day
workshop will help you become more of what you want to be, she says, to change lives and fnd joy while you are at
it. It will have plenty of physics and healing techniques to keep you grounded. But in the end, it is about discovering
your healing gifts and learning how to better use them.
Five threads are woven through this 15 hour experiential workshop: Self- care, increasing the capacity of the healing,
principles of physics, spiritual healing and healing techniques. Vicki will help the group explore principles of sound,
electricity, electromagnetism, and quantum physics that resemble the energetic structures, processes, and experienc-
es described by practitioners of energy therapies. But most importantly, she will guide the participants in a series of
meditations for personal healing. As each individual opens to the possibility to self healing and learns a new avenue
to spiritual healing, each person will be more prepared to speak with one heart, a single heart that consists of them-
selves and the Divine as they know it. Space is limited to 30 participants. Register Here.

Sometimes a single coincidence can spark
a full sense of passion and commitment. It
is as if a small blip on my radar now lls the
whole screen. A recent casual conversation
with my dad developed into new discoveries
of longstanding wisdom.

At a regular visit with my family, Dad showed me a September
1959 Readers Digest. My mother had placed a piece of mask-
ing tape across the cover and marked it SAVE. Dad was in
the mood to clean out closets and simplify his home, and her
directions to not throw this out perplexed him. Why had she kept
this particular magazine? Mom died about 10 years ago so we
could not ask her. Therefore, I found myself enjoying ipping
through the magazine for the next hour - imagining what my
mother was thinking back then.

I read one article after another, but none of them struck a
familiar note. Then, I noticed an article about an individual who
was from the same North Carolina county where my mom
was raised. This story by Clarence Hall about Rev. Richard K.
Youngs beginnings as a hospital chaplain was titled Spiritual
Therapy: Modern Medicines Newest Ally. That certainly got my
attention. On the third page of the article I found a reference to
the inuence of a rural Baptist minister named Rev. N. J. Todd
my grandfather! I read about my grandfathers habit of asking
nothing of anyone but the chance to help and how he was said
to have proclaimed that there is no fun in life like helping folks.
I immediately resonated with his style of appreciating the honor
of being able to help someone. As I make my nursing rounds,
I think of my grandfather out in his community making his pasto-
ral rounds and being there for folks. The connection
has boosted my drive to be a more holistic nurse, using all my
Healing Touch knowledge.

As I read the whole article, Rev. Youngs story gave me much
to think about. I saw many parallels to how this young chaplain
laid the groundwork for chaplains to be part of the healthcare
team, and how we as Healing Touch practitioners must do like-
wise. Addressing the needs of the spirit and allowing a person
to nd their illness as a way to instill hope and new meaning in
their life is something we as energy workers also do. Rev. Young
was so present to someones needs, so in the moment, that pa-
tients and other healthcare practitioners soon valued his work.
Dont we as energy workers nd ourselves in similar scenarios?
I know I do all the time.

A few years ago, just after my Healing Touch Certication
became ofcial, I was at a job interview at Baltimore Wash-
ington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, MD. With credentials in
hand, I explained how my skills as an Oncology Certied Nurse
with experience educating and supporting women through all
aspects of breast healthcare would enhance my role as Breast
Program Nurse Coordinator. I also emphasized how my skills
as a Healing Touch Certied Practitioner would directly support
their journeys towards fuller and happier lives.
Nursing at the bedside includes providing comfort
measures and empathetic listening. With the staff-
ing crisis in hospitals, and with the healthcare crisis
in our American population, we need to expand our
approach to bedside care to include energy work,
which directly addresses the whole person and esca-
lates recovery. With this in mind, I have offered

patients Healing Touch throughout my day - along
with everything else I do.

This rather old magazine article, and a renewal of my original
passion for the Healing Touch work, has led me to review what
I remember from the teachings of Janet Mentgen, our beloved
founder. Janet impressed all of us with her practical wisdom.
She had a way of using plain language to make profound state-
ments. A few of these truths remain in my memory as I review
the classes she taught me. She quoted Alice A. Bailey and her
writings about how we need to capture language to describe
the energy body if we want to communicate about the work. It
is sometimes still a challenge for me to explain to physicians
about the work the patient is receiving. Janets suggestion to
offer the work as a relaxation technique or a pain relief tech-
nique, and that it addresses the subtle energy of our being
has saved me much stress. I also remember how she taught by
answering questions oh she kept to a schedule and agenda
all right but she would meet us where our needs presented.
Her explanations were never forced. In fact, she impressed on
us to routinely initiate conversations about Healing Touch and
the importance of energy work, but not to waste time arguing
or trying to convince skeptics. She simply stated that there are
many others who want the work. She separated herself from
critics and skeptics by singing to herself I know something you
dont know. My conversations with clients and other healthcare
practitioners have been most successful when I remember her
style of talking about energy work.

I also still remember Janet saying, Just observe. She always
directed us to notice themes in our patients stories, and notice
their response to the sessions, without judgments. I noted the
same simple style of empathetic listening in the story about the
chaplain. Reading how Rev. Young conversed with his patients,
reminded me how Janet advised us to take a history - allowing
time for intuitive insights to direct our questions. She encour-
aged us to connect a clients biography timeline with symptom
onset in our documentation. Yet we are to always allow the
clients to draw their own conclusions, set their goals, and walk
their own journeys. Remembering this from Janet has helped
me be there for my patients - in the moment - respecting that it
is their journey. It is all about being in the right place, at the right
time, with a clear and open heart.

I know my grandfather died too young, leaving some young chil-
dren for my grandmother to raise. I wonder how much service
workers back then appreciated the need to rst take care of
ones self. Janets reminder to include self -care in our daily rou-
tine was almost a mantra. She made this point eminently clear
during one of my classes in October 2001. We were all won-
dering how to organize to be helpful to those near and far who
were feeling the devastation of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Janet simply pointed out that we were all blown apart that day,
and then asked how many had been on the table themselves in
the past week. She went on to emphasize that we have to rst
take care of ourselves if we are to be ready to do the work.
When my clients seem to be low in number, or my conversa-
tions dwindle about how Healing Touch practitioners are so
needed as part of the healthcare team today, I remember Ja-
nets advice and get a stronger handle on my own needs. Within
a short time, the universe takes care of providing more oppor-
tunities for me to share the work with patients, and enthusiasti-
cally talk with others here at the hospital about Healing Touch.

I cherish the Readers Digest my mother saved as if for me to
nd. I now have a strong connection to my grandfather and his
spiritual work. The article has triggered memories of Janets
words and has renewed my passion for Healing Touch. May we
all nd our wisdom from the past and carry it forward with zeal!

oncology patients. She has been working since May 2003 at
Baltimore Washington Medical Center with their Breast Pro-
gram. She has been offering Healing Touch techniques to her
patients in the out patient clinics as well as to those admitted
to the oncology unit. She and her husband live in Odenton, Md.
and share ownership of their daily routines with two Scottie
dogs. Participation in the Unitarian Universalist Church of An-
napolis has enhanced her spiritual growth as much as has the
ongoing journey with Healing Touch colleagues. Seeing her 30
year old son make choices based on integrity and compassion
gives her hope for the next generation. Seeing her father, now
80 years old, facing life with much vigor and optimism gives her
hope for her generation. Seeing HT practitioners offering heart-
felt work to many gives her hope for us all.

Suzi Rhodes, Healing Touch Instructor offers classes to the
sixteen thousand senior residents living in Laguna Woods
Village, California, formerly Leisure World. I am amazed at the
depth of knowledge that is present here in the Village. Often the
students teach me. The average age is seventy-eight, and many
doctors and nurses have chosen to retire here.

One of Suzis students, Yolanda Mendiviles, a massage thera-
pist said Suzis Healing Touch class was amazing, she made
the healing technique easy to learn and I now have the ability to
offer this healing modality.

Another student in the class, Judy Ambrose, a licensed
psychotherapist, brought with her knowledge of Reiki and
wanted to know the differences between the two methods. The
exchange of information was deeply satisfying to all. Judy says,
I was surprised as I learned quite a bit that I was unaware of
previously.
Bertha Marcil, says I enjoyed Suzis class and like to come
to her for regular
sessions. Bertha is

In this quarters Research Corner, we have the privilege of
presenting a summary of a pilot study by Janice Maville, cur-
rently Program Coordinator and Assistant Dean in the College
of Health Sciences and Human Services at the University
of Texas-Pan America and her colleagues, Judy Bowen and
Grant Benham. Pilot studies are the dress rehearsals of larger
studies. They are done to make sure there are no unexpected
glitches in design or execution of a study. Findings from a pilot
study often help to decide whether the larger version should
even take place depending on whether the ndings are promis-
ing. The smaller numbers of subjects in pilot studies can make
trust in signicant results premature but do support proceeding
to a larger study. Jan explains in this article the importance
of the pilot study in testing the waters for a larger study. We
look forward to a follow up article when the results of the larger
study are available. I think I can speak for all of us in saying we
appreciate the contribution to the body of quality Healing Touch
research this group is making.
- Kathy Moreland Layte
Maville, J.M., Bowen, J. E., & Benham, G. (2008). The Effect of
Healing Touch on Stress Perception and Biological Correlates
of Stress in University Health Science Students. Holistic Nurs-
ing Practice, 22(2), 103-110.
The researchers in this study investigated the effect of Healing
Touch on perceptions of state/trait anxiety, and the biological
measures of heart rate, blood pressure, skin conductance/
resistance, skin temperature, and oxyhemoglobin in otherwise
healthy university students. This was a pilot study and used a
single group, repeated measures design with a non-probability
convenience sample of thirty subjects. Healing Touch, conduct-
ed by a certied practitioner, included two techniques, Magnet-
ic Passes: Hands in Motion and Chakra Connection. These
techniques were consistent throughout each session and were
delivered in a specically timed sequence.
Physiological data were collected prior to the intervention, dur-
ing Healing Touch treatment, and post intervention. With the
exception of skin conductance/resistance, changes indicative
of a relaxation response were observed in all the physiological
measures. Results of the State/Trait anxiety inventory, given
before and after treatment, were signicant for a decrease in
state (how one feels at the moment) from pretreatment to post
treatment regarding perceived stress. Subjects post treatment
voiced comments regarding sensations experienced such as
feeling light, heavy, tingly, cool, and heat. Of particular interest
was that 63% of subjects reported a feeling of being safe. The
results of this pilot study indicate that Healing Touch has a posi-
tive effect in the promotion of relaxation and reduction of stress
as perceived by the individual. As such, the inclusion of Healing
Touch in clinical practice could be an effective adjunct in the
holistic caring process.
A major challenge in performing this study, as with many
quantitative studies involving energy modalities, were the many
confounding factors beyond the control of the researchers that
may have inuenced changes such as merely having time
to relax from everyday duties, coming into an air conditioned
environment from a semitropical day, or being in the presence
of a caring individual. Future researchers need to acknowledge
such confounds and control for them as much as is possible.
Also a challenge to researchers in regard to stress research
are other factors that affect stress including nutritional state and
overall physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health of the
participant.
The value of pilot studies is often under appreciated. Such
studies, however are vitally important in testing or rening every
aspect of the quantitative research process including research
methodology, treatments or interventions, data collection
instruments, sampling plan, and data analysis. As a result of
this pilot study, a second study has been completed that in-
cluded a control group, random sampling, deletion of oxyhemo-
globin measurement and the addition of testing for changes in
immune response. Results of the follow-up study are currently
under analysis.

What do you envision when you hear Silver Years as a de-
scriptive for the latter part of life? For many is it is an image of
gray and silver heads on aging and weakened bodies.
In the new paradigm of wellness and holism there is a whole
new meaning to Silver as it relates to growing older. It stands
for richness, strength, and durability just like the metal itself.
Many of us in healing and service professions who work with
older folks know that the greatest wisdom, knowledge and
sensitivities of life are harnessed within our elderly population.
From their knowledge and experience, the information their en-
ergy elds carry is vast. They not only hold their own personal
knowingness but also the collective of their era.
Those of us who have done Healing Touch on the elderly see
that their seemingly delicate and sensitive energy systems as
not needing much energy. Their ability to receive energy (an
electrical current) is heightened. Silver, as a metal, has the
highest electrical conductivity of any substance.
How often do we say how remarkable our elders are when we
allow them to shine?
The compounds of silver are much the same. Its halogen salts
are remarkable when light hits them. And interestingly, silver
has been an exchange coin since ancient times. Alchemists
called it Luna after the goddess of the moon.
We need to reclaim our awareness of, and value for, these very
special people. Too many people tuck their elders away and
put them aside in facilities, just as silver coins are tossed on the
shelf and forgotten.
Lets celebrate our elders and their wisdom.

Like many of you baby boomers, I am getting
older! I will be 55 years old this month and I
have been reading the AARP monthly maga-
zine for several years now. I am letting my
hair turn grey and am nding it empowering.
I bought my rst pair of trifocals last year.
This month I will be able to start taking ad-
vantage of some discounts that are available
for seniors. I am joining the ranks of the grey
brigade and am enjoying observing myself
transition into these golden years. I sweetly
recall John Denvers song Poems, Prayers
and Promises one of the lines being it turns
me on to think of growing old. I remember
singing it in my twenties when the thought of
growing old was a faraway concept. I am in
the next chapter of my life and the elders I
have known have prepared me well for it!
My maternal grandmother lived with my family (Mom, Dad,
and older sister) from before my birth until she died at age 72 -
when I was 15. Seventy-two sounded so old back then! Now it
sounds friendlier and less mysterious. She was the only really
old person present in my daily life. I remember being fasci-
nated with her aging body -- the popped up veins in her hands
with which she let me play, her textured grey hair, thinning skin,
curled toes with corns, facial wrinkles, effortful gait and rounded
back. Grandma loved me and was protective of me. She spoiled
me as best she could with her attention as she did not have any
nacial resources. She was widowed as a young woman with
ve growing children. Her life was hard. I remember how safe
I felt with her - especially sleeping with her in her bed. I think I
rst understood what healing touch meant through my rela-
tionship with her.
My vocational path has continually brought me back to the
elders of our population. My rst job in nursing was as an aide
in a nursing home. Back then I did not have the skills that I now
have for care-giving, but I know I was friendly, cheerful and
compassionate. I helped these dear ladies with bathing, toilet-
ing, dressing, eating, hair combing, brushing teeth, backrubs,
walking, exercising, applying comfort measures, the dying pro-
cess and after- death care, and of course, just spending time
talking. I remember one woman who would never buy a large
tube of toothpaste because she thought she would never live
long enough to use it all. (She nally bought a large tube!) I like
to think that my cheerful attitude and willingness to serve was
healing for them even though I was just in nursing school and
hardly knew anything beyond the basics of nursing care or how
I could use my hands and intention for healing (as I do now with
Healing Touch).
During the rst half of the 1980s, I was working on my doctoral
degree in nursing at Catholic University of America in Wash-
ington, D.C. Getting discouraged after attending congressional
hearings on Capital Hill and watching how bills are created
and voted upon, I abandoned my dream to be a health care
reformer. I just was not meant to deal with large scale politics!
My track was mental health nursing with a minor in Long Term
Health Care Administration and I chose to do my doctoral dis-
sertation on Caring Behaviors among Elderly Nursing Home
Residents (This was my rst introduction to Jean Watsons
Caring Theory/Science, which HTP embraced in 2007 as the
nursing theory that best supports HT practice.)
During my research study in the nursing home, I found that
despite the many physical, emotional and mental challenges
that the frail elderly have to manage, the majority of them still
want and need to nd ways to give of themselves. The inner
desire to care for others does not grow old or die. We younger

How I Learned HT
folks should help our elders nd opportunities to continue to
serve and minister to others, however small that may be. Most
elders who have aged with a healthy mental attitude and emo-
tional health still want to be of service in whatever way they can
-- to somehow be instruments of healing. Some HT Practitio-
ners/Instructors have taught HT to our senior citizens with great
success. Let more of us do the same so anyone who wants
to learn may have the opportunity -- despite age or disability!
We can all keep on giving until it is time to exit this life. Healing
Touch does not require physical strength or high intellectual
capacity. Mostly, it requires an openness to learn, a centered
heart and a pair of willing hands --things the majority of our
elders still have and want to use!
In 2002, although I was teaching many HT classes and had
an active HT practice, I found myself working in a long term
care facility again to make ends meet, this time as a part-time
staff nurse who had not done any mainstream nursing for over
ten years. I had recently experienced divorce and bankruptcy
due to my former husbands failed business during the .com
crash. My responsibilities from 6:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. each shift
included administering several hundred medications to about
thirty residents during a twelve-hour period, changing dress-
ings, IVs, enema administration, physical assessments, talking
to families, physicians and allied health care professionals,
and more documentation than I care to remember. This was
the most stressful nursing role I had ever experienced and the
ludicrous amount of medications I was required to administer to
these dear old folks was a real conict for my soul. I had about
one minute of quality time per resident on the average each day
to really be fully present. How did I get through this?
Having practiced energy medicine since the 1980s (rst with
Therapeutic Touch and then with HT in 1992), I knew I could
still work energetically and though I did not have quantity of
time to spend per resident, I could denitely provide quality. I
knew that Spirit was not limited by time or space, so in reality, I
had all the time I needed to provide Healing Touch if I believed
it and held the intention. I learned how to do one minute HT
treatments by focusing my intent strongly during my designat-
ed minute of quality time that I allowed for each resident. I used
my hands with a loving touch very intentionally -- I imagined
looking into each persons soul with love when I gave eye con-
tact -- I smiled to acknowledge the goodness and wholeness of
those under my care -- and I prayed for their comfort and heal-
ing. I sometimes had a few extra minutes to provide a real HT
treatment with specic HT methods, but those times were few
and far between. I will never forget working on a woman who
had a mental illness and was often very cutting in her remarks
to staff. Somehow the time manifested for me to administer a
Chakra Spread when it seemed she was dying. She looked so
sweet and peaceful as I worked on her. Although she expired
a few hours later, I was able to glimpse her wholeness and her
goodness in a way that I was not able to see before. That was
healing for ME as well as for her. To see her peaceful after such
a struggle with her emotions and thoughts all those months was
very comforting to me and strengthened my faith in our Cre-
ators benevolence and love for all of us.
When Janet Mentgen invited me to become her Assistant
Program Director in 2003, she asked me what I would like to
do within my administrative role in HT. One of my two goals
was to bring HT to all nursing homes. Not only would it serve
the elderly who need Healing Touch, but there is at least one
nursing home in every community, making it a perfect place to
spread HT locally, teach volunteers, family members, staff, and
interested residents how to give HT as a healing modality. This
is a very possible dream. Will you join me in manifesting it?
