Letter from the Program Director
Greetings
from Cynthia Hutchison
Healing Touch Program Director
Welcome to the April Issue of Energy Magazine
Happy Spring to those of you in the Northern Hemisphere!
Spring is about birth, hope, and new life, but this issue of En-
ergy Magazine includes stories about the winter of life, those
golden years when the physical life forces are naturally waning.
Yet, many older folks relate to feeling birth, hope and new life,
not necessarily in relation to physicality, but to all aspects of
our life force and spiritual selves. Aging and death are a natural
progression of human life, but those of us involved with Heal-
ing Touch and holistic health care know that quality of life can
be signicantly impacted through conscious thoughts, attitudes
and deeds, including participating in energy healing. Those of
us - Healing Touch Practitioners - who are in our later years
of life often note how doing energy work for many years has
inuenced us to experience healthier aging compared to many
of our same-age cohorts. (Some of us even joke about HT be-
ing an elixir of life like the fountain of youth.) As practitioners,
we are also aware that through our sharing HT with our elderly
friends, family and clients, we can support their physical health,
emotional balance, mental clarity and alignment with Spirit. It is
indeed a blessing to both give and receive Healing Touch!
In 2003 when Janet Mentgen ofcially invited me to mentor
under her as HTPs next Program Director, she asked me what
my goals were for HTP. One of them was to bring HT to every
long term health care facility in the United States and in any
country that wanted HT. With an extended history of long term
care nursing practice (see my article in this issue), I knew that
part of my lifes calling was to serve our elderly population.
Janet introduced me to Howard Batie, who created a compre-
hensive HT for Long Term Care Facilities program in the state
of Washington with Janets blessings. Howard gifted his work to
HTP, and we have set our intention to adapt it for a national
model that could
be implemented
to improve the quality of life for those working / living in long
term care facilities. We are hoping that 2009 will be the year
where HTP can test a model for bringing HT into the daily lives
of senior living facilities. Just imagine your local LTC facility
holding HT classes for the community, training staff, volunteers
and families, and even supporting their interested residents
who want to learn HT. As Bernie Clarks article in this issue
validates, we are never too old to learn (Healing Touch)! We
would love to hear your success stories related to your experi-
ences of teaching or practicing HT in nursing homes or senior
living communities.
This issue not only has inspiring articles about HT and the
Elderly, but includes the usual array of interesting features,
including a report / link to the recent Washington, D.C., Summit
on Integrative Medicine; EMs quarterly article on HT Research;
and a super fun one-page yer to help promote HT class atten-
dance in your local communities!
I think back to my experience as a hospice nurse and how
precious it was to share HT sacred time and energy with my el-
derly clients who were getting ready to cross the threshold. May
we all be blessed to receive Healing Touch (or something like it)
when we are getting ready to leave this world.
Spring blessings to us all,
Cynthia

Healing Touch Worldwide Foundation happily
announces Hospice by the Sea (HBTS) as our
2009 grant recipient. Hospice by the Sea is a not-for-
prot, community-based provider of quality hospice, palliative
care, and home health services. The mission of HBTS is to
provide skilled medical care and comfort to patients with life-
limiting illnesses and emotional, social, and spiritual support
to patients as well as their families regardless of age, race,
creed, diagnosis, or ability to pay. They are fully licensed, cer-
tied by Medicare and Medicaid, and accredited by the Joint
Commission, a gold standard for patient care. Their services
are guided by four cornerstones - Integrity, Excellence, Ac-
countability and Teamwork.
Your donations are supporting their project, Caring for Our
Caregivers. This project will pilot a program that combines
self-care education and Healing Touch to reduce the impact of
stress and compassion fatigue among nurses in their inpatient
Hospice Care Center. Recently, a Florida State University study
found that 80% of hospice and palliative care nurses were at
moderate to high risk for burnout and compassion fatigue re-
sulting in increased absenteeism, a signicantly compromised
sense of well-being and an exodus from the profession. Without
your support, the Foundation would not be able to fund the
expenses needed to provide Healing Touch Therapy to HBTSs
professional caregiver staff.

Sacred Powers: A Medical Intuitives Perspective
Nancy Weber, Medical Intuitive and Healer
A One-Day Workshop, August 3rd
Nancy Weber RN, works for the sherifs department in Morristown, NJ where she is the
resident psychic detective they call upon when all else fails. She is a nurse and a healer
who combines her work and believes that all of us have the ability to tap into our intuition
at the soul level to be of service to others.
This workshop is designed to enhance any healing modality. Encouraging ourselves to enter
into the presence of the divine light and stay aware of the fow of information we gather, enhances all our healing
work. Nancy explains that we will explore the psychic senses with the knowledge that these senses are simply the
souls awareness of life and when we avail ourselves we increase all possibilities. Hands on techniques suitable for all
healing work, applied kinesiolgy, aura viewing, art, music and other techniques will be explored. Nancy will teach us
how to get in touch with the core essence of a persons soul as they present to us with healing issues. This is some-
thing she says we all have the ability to do - - it is a matter of connecting into our own souls light. Register Here.
Physics and Spiritual Healing For Healers
Vicki Slater, Healer and Educator
A Two-Day Post Conference Workshop, August 3 - 4
Vicki Slater, RN, PhD took her frst Healing Touch class in 1989 and wondered aloud how it
really works! So she found out by studying physics, electrical engineering and science. She
is now a published author on the subject and has been a keynote speaker on the physics of
healing for a number of organizations. When asked about this particular presentation, Vicki
had this to say. Being a true healer goes beyond technique. It is about reaching into the
Mysteries and letting the Mystery do the work - - transcending human abilities. This two day
workshop will help you become more of what you want to be, she says, to change lives and fnd joy while you are at
it. It will have plenty of physics and healing techniques to keep you grounded. But in the end, it is about discovering
your healing gifts and learning how to better use them.
Five threads are woven through this 15 hour experiential workshop: Self- care, increasing the capacity of the healing,
principles of physics, spiritual healing and healing techniques. Vicki will help the group explore principles of sound,
electricity, electromagnetism, and quantum physics that resemble the energetic structures, processes, and experienc-
es described by practitioners of energy therapies. But most importantly, she will guide the participants in a series of
meditations for personal healing. As each individual opens to the possibility to self healing and learns a new avenue
to spiritual healing, each person will be more prepared to speak with one heart, a single heart that consists of them-
selves and the Divine as they know it. Space is limited to 30 participants. Register Here.
Participate in this celebratory event joining the entire Healing Touch Community!

Sometimes a single coincidence can spark
a full sense of passion and commitment. It
is as if a small blip on my radar now lls the
whole screen. A recent casual conversation
with my dad developed into new discoveries
of longstanding wisdom.
At a regular visit with my family, Dad showed me a September
1959 Readers Digest. My mother had placed a piece of mask-
ing tape across the cover and marked it SAVE. Dad was in
the mood to clean out closets and simplify his home, and her
directions to not throw this out perplexed him. Why had she kept
this particular magazine? Mom died about 10 years ago so we
could not ask her. Therefore, I found myself enjoying ipping
through the magazine for the next hour - imagining what my
mother was thinking back then.
I read one article after another, but none of them struck a
familiar note. Then, I noticed an article about an individual who
was from the same North Carolina county where my mom
was raised. This story by Clarence Hall about Rev. Richard K.
Youngs beginnings as a hospital chaplain was titled Spiritual
Therapy: Modern Medicines Newest Ally. That certainly got my
attention. On the third page of the article I found a reference to
the inuence of a rural Baptist minister named Rev. N. J. Todd
my grandfather! I read about my grandfathers habit of asking
nothing of anyone but the chance to help and how he was said
to have proclaimed that there is no fun in life like helping folks.
I immediately resonated with his style of appreciating the honor
of being able to help someone. As I make my nursing rounds,
I think of my grandfather out in his community making his pasto-
ral rounds and being there for folks. The connection
has boosted my drive to be a more holistic nurse, using all my
Healing Touch knowledge.
As I read the whole article, Rev. Youngs story gave me much
to think about. I saw many parallels to how this young chaplain
laid the groundwork for chaplains to be part of the healthcare
team, and how we as Healing Touch practitioners must do like-
wise. Addressing the needs of the spirit and allowing a person
to nd their illness as a way to instill hope and new meaning in
their life is something we as energy workers also do. Rev. Young
was so present to someones needs, so in the moment, that pa-
tients and other healthcare practitioners soon valued his work.
Dont we as energy workers nd ourselves in similar scenarios?
I know I do all the time.
A few years ago, just after my Healing Touch Certication
became ofcial, I was at a job interview at Baltimore Wash-
ington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, MD. With credentials in
hand, I explained how my skills as an Oncology Certied Nurse
with experience educating and supporting women through all
aspects of breast healthcare would enhance my role as Breast
Program Nurse Coordinator. I also emphasized how my skills
as a Healing Touch Certied Practitioner would directly support
their journeys towards fuller and happier lives.
Nursing at the bedside includes providing comfort
measures and empathetic listening. With the staff-
ing crisis in hospitals, and with the healthcare crisis
in our American population, we need to expand our
approach to bedside care to include energy work,
which directly addresses the whole person and esca-
lates recovery. With this in mind, I have offered
by Deborah H. Russell, RN, OCN, HTCP

Legacy Discovered
patients Healing Touch throughout my day - along
with everything else I do.
This rather old magazine article, and a renewal of my original
passion for the Healing Touch work, has led me to review what
I remember from the teachings of Janet Mentgen, our beloved
founder. Janet impressed all of us with her practical wisdom.
She had a way of using plain language to make profound state-
ments. A few of these truths remain in my memory as I review
the classes she taught me. She quoted Alice A. Bailey and her
writings about how we need to capture language to describe
the energy body if we want to communicate about the work. It
is sometimes still a challenge for me to explain to physicians
about the work the patient is receiving. Janets suggestion to
offer the work as a relaxation technique or a pain relief tech-
nique, and that it addresses the subtle energy of our being
has saved me much stress. I also remember how she taught by
answering questions oh she kept to a schedule and agenda
all right but she would meet us where our needs presented.
Her explanations were never forced. In fact, she impressed on
us to routinely initiate conversations about Healing Touch and
the importance of energy work, but not to waste time arguing
or trying to convince skeptics. She simply stated that there are
many others who want the work. She separated herself from
critics and skeptics by singing to herself I know something you
dont know. My conversations with clients and other healthcare
practitioners have been most successful when I remember her
style of talking about energy work.
I also still remember Janet saying, Just observe. She always
directed us to notice themes in our patients stories, and notice
their response to the sessions, without judgments. I noted the
same simple style of empathetic listening in the story about the
chaplain. Reading how Rev. Young conversed with his patients,
reminded me how Janet advised us to take a history - allowing
time for intuitive insights to direct our questions. She encour-
aged us to connect a clients biography timeline with symptom
onset in our documentation. Yet we are to always allow the
clients to draw their own conclusions, set their goals, and walk
their own journeys. Remembering this from Janet has helped
me be there for my patients - in the moment - respecting that it
is their journey. It is all about being in the right place, at the right
time, with a clear and open heart.
I know my grandfather died too young, leaving some young chil-
dren for my grandmother to raise. I wonder how much service
workers back then appreciated the need to rst take care of
ones self. Janets reminder to include self -care in our daily rou-
tine was almost a mantra. She made this point eminently clear
during one of my classes in October 2001. We were all won-
dering how to organize to be helpful to those near and far who
were feeling the devastation of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Janet simply pointed out that we were all blown apart that day,
and then asked how many had been on the table themselves in
the past week. She went on to emphasize that we have to rst
take care of ourselves if we are to be ready to do the work.
When my clients seem to be low in number, or my conversa-
tions dwindle about how Healing Touch practitioners are so
needed as part of the healthcare team today, I remember Ja-
nets advice and get a stronger handle on my own needs. Within
a short time, the universe takes care of providing more oppor-
tunities for me to share the work with patients, and enthusiasti-
cally talk with others here at the hospital about Healing Touch.
I cherish the Readers Digest my mother saved as if for me to
nd. I now have a strong connection to my grandfather and his
spiritual work. The article has triggered memories of Janets
words and has renewed my passion for Healing Touch. May we
all nd our wisdom from the past and carry it forward with zeal!
About the author:
Debbie has almost 30 years experience in nursing, mostly with
oncology patients. She has been working since May 2003 at
Baltimore Washington Medical Center with their Breast Pro-
gram. She has been offering Healing Touch techniques to her
patients in the out patient clinics as well as to those admitted
to the oncology unit. She and her husband live in Odenton, Md.
and share ownership of their daily routines with two Scottie
dogs. Participation in the Unitarian Universalist Church of An-
napolis has enhanced her spiritual growth as much as has the
ongoing journey with Healing Touch colleagues. Seeing her 30
year old son make choices based on integrity and compassion
gives her hope for the next generation. Seeing her father, now
80 years old, facing life with much vigor and optimism gives her
hope for her generation. Seeing HT practitioners offering heart-
felt work to many gives her hope for us all.

Suzi Rhodes, Healing Touch Instructor offers classes to the
sixteen thousand senior residents living in Laguna Woods
Village, California, formerly Leisure World. I am amazed at the
depth of knowledge that is present here in the Village. Often the
students teach me. The average age is seventy-eight, and many
doctors and nurses have chosen to retire here.
One of Suzis students, Yolanda Mendiviles, a massage thera-
pist said Suzis Healing Touch class was amazing, she made
the healing technique easy to learn and I now have the ability to
offer this healing modality.
Another student in the class, Judy Ambrose, a licensed
psychotherapist, brought with her knowledge of Reiki and
wanted to know the differences between the two methods. The
exchange of information was deeply satisfying to all. Judy says,
I was surprised as I learned quite a bit that I was unaware of

In this quarters Research Corner, we have the privilege of
presenting a summary of a pilot study by Janice Maville, cur-
rently Program Coordinator and Assistant Dean in the College
of Health Sciences and Human Services at the University
of Texas-Pan America and her colleagues, Judy Bowen and
Grant Benham. Pilot studies are the dress rehearsals of larger
studies. They are done to make sure there are no unexpected
glitches in design or execution of a study. Findings from a pilot
study often help to decide whether the larger version should
even take place depending on whether the ndings are promis-
ing. The smaller numbers of subjects in pilot studies can make
trust in signicant results premature but do support proceeding
to a larger study. Jan explains in this article the importance
of the pilot study in testing the waters for a larger study. We
look forward to a follow up article when the results of the larger
study are available. I think I can speak for all of us in saying we
appreciate the contribution to the body of quality Healing Touch
research this group is making.

Maville, J.M., Bowen, J. E., & Benham, G. (2008). The Effect of
Healing Touch on Stress Perception and Biological Correlates
of Stress in University Health Science Students. Holistic Nurs-
ing Practice, 22(2), 103-110.
The researchers in this study investigated the effect of Healing
Touch on perceptions of state/trait anxiety, and the biological
measures of heart rate, blood pressure, skin conductance/
resistance, skin temperature, and oxyhemoglobin in otherwise
healthy university students. This was a pilot study and used a
single group, repeated measures design with a non-probability
convenience sample of thirty subjects. Healing Touch, conduct-
ed by a certied practitioner, included two techniques, Magnet-
ic Passes: Hands in Motion and Chakra Connection. These
techniques were consistent throughout each session and were
delivered in a specically timed sequence.
Physiological data were collected prior to the intervention, dur-
ing Healing Touch treatment, and post intervention. With the
exception of skin conductance/resistance, changes indicative
of a relaxation response were observed in all the physiological
measures. Results of the State/Trait anxiety inventory, given
before and after treatment, were signicant for a decrease in
state (how one feels at the moment) from pretreatment to post
treatment regarding perceived stress. Subjects post treatment
voiced comments regarding sensations experienced such as
feeling light, heavy, tingly, cool, and heat. Of particular interest
was that 63% of subjects reported a feeling of being safe. The
results of this pilot study indicate that Healing Touch has a posi-
tive effect in the promotion of relaxation and reduction of stress
as perceived by the individual. As such, the inclusion of Healing
Touch in clinical practice could be an effective adjunct in the
holistic caring process.
A major challenge in performing this study, as with many
quantitative studies involving energy modalities, were the many
confounding factors beyond the control of the researchers that
may have inuenced changes such as merely having time
to relax from everyday duties, coming into an air conditioned
environment from a semitropical day, or being in the presence
of a caring individual. Future researchers need to acknowledge
such confounds and control for them as much as is possible.
Also a challenge to researchers in regard to stress research
are other factors that affect stress including nutritional state and
overall physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health of the
participant.
The value of pilot studies is often under appreciated. Such
studies, however are vitally important in testing or rening every
aspect of the quantitative research process including research
methodology, treatments or interventions, data collection
instruments, sampling plan, and data analysis. As a result of
this pilot study, a second study has been completed that in-
cluded a control group, random sampling, deletion of oxyhemo-
globin measurement and the addition of testing for changes in
immune response. Results of the follow-up study are currently
under analysis.

What do you envision when you hear Silver Years as a de-
scriptive for the latter part of life? For many is it is an image of
gray and silver heads on aging and weakened bodies.
In the new paradigm of wellness and holism there is a whole
new meaning to Silver as it relates to growing older. It stands
for richness, strength, and durability just like the metal itself.
Many of us in healing and service professions who work with
older folks know that the greatest wisdom, knowledge and
sensitivities of life are harnessed within our elderly population.
From their knowledge and experience, the information their en-
ergy elds carry is vast. They not only hold their own personal
knowingness but also the collective of their era.
Those of us who have done Healing Touch on the elderly see
that their seemingly delicate and sensitive energy systems as
not needing much energy. Their ability to receive energy (an
electrical current) is heightened. Silver, as a metal, has the
highest electrical conductivity of any substance.
How often do we say how remarkable our elders are when we
allow them to shine?
The compounds of silver are much the same. Its halogen salts
are remarkable when light hits them. And interestingly, silver
has been an exchange coin since ancient times. Alchemists
called it Luna after the goddess of the moon.
We need to reclaim our awareness of, and value for, these very
special people. Too many people tuck their elders away and
put them aside in facilities, just as silver coins are tossed on the
shelf and forgotten.
Lets celebrate our elders and their wisdom.

Like many of you baby boomers, I am getting
older! I will be 55 years old this month and I
have been reading the AARP monthly maga-
zine for several years now. I am letting my
hair turn grey and am nding it empowering.
I bought my rst pair of trifocals last year.
This month I will be able to start taking ad-
vantage of some discounts that are available
for seniors. I am joining the ranks of the grey
brigade and am enjoying observing myself
transition into these golden years. I sweetly
recall John Denvers song Poems, Prayers
and Promises one of the lines being it turns
me on to think of growing old. I remember
singing it in my twenties when the thought of
growing old was a faraway concept. I am in
the next chapter of my life and the elders I
have known have prepared me well for it!
My maternal grandmother lived with my family (Mom, Dad,
and older sister) from before my birth until she died at age 72 -
when I was 15. Seventy-two sounded so old back then! Now it
sounds friendlier and less mysterious. She was the only really
old person present in my daily life. I remember being fasci-
nated with her aging body -- the popped up veins in her hands
with which she let me play, her textured grey hair, thinning skin,
curled toes with corns, facial wrinkles, effortful gait and rounded
back. Grandma loved me and was protective of me. She spoiled
me as best she could with her attention as she did not have any
nacial resources. She was widowed as a young woman with
ve growing children. Her life was hard. I remember how safe
I felt with her - especially sleeping with her in her bed. I think I
rst understood what healing touch meant through my rela-
tionship with her.
My vocational path has continually brought me back to the
elders of our population. My rst job in nursing was as an aide
in a nursing home. Back then I did not have the skills that I now
have for care-giving, but I know I was friendly, cheerful and
compassionate. I helped these dear ladies with bathing, toilet-
ing, dressing, eating, hair combing, brushing teeth, backrubs,
walking, exercising, applying comfort measures, the dying pro-
cess and after- death care, and of course, just spending time
talking. I remember one woman who would never buy a large
tube of toothpaste because she thought she would never live
long enough to use it all. (She nally bought a large tube!) I like
to think that my cheerful attitude and willingness to serve was
healing for them even though I was just in nursing school and
hardly knew anything beyond the basics of nursing care or how
I could use my hands and intention for healing (as I do now with
Healing Touch).
During the rst half of the 1980s, I was working on my doctoral
degree in nursing at Catholic University of America in Wash-
ington, D.C. Getting discouraged after attending congressional
hearings on Capital Hill and watching how bills are created
and voted upon, I abandoned my dream to be a health care
reformer. I just was not meant to deal with large scale politics!
My track was mental health nursing with a minor in Long Term
Health Care Administration and I chose to do my doctoral dis-
sertation on Caring Behaviors among Elderly Nursing Home
Residents (This was my rst introduction to Jean Watsons
Caring Theory/Science, which HTP embraced in 2007 as the
nursing theory that best supports HT practice.)
During my research study in the nursing home, I found that
despite the many physical, emotional and mental challenges
that the frail elderly have to manage, the majority of them still
want and need to nd ways to give of themselves. The inner
desire to care for others does not grow old or die. We younger

How I Learned HT
folks should help our elders nd opportunities to continue to
serve and minister to others, however small that may be. Most
elders who have aged with a healthy mental attitude and emo-
tional health still want to be of service in whatever way they can
-- to somehow be instruments of healing. Some HT Practitio-
ners/Instructors have taught HT to our senior citizens with great
success. Let more of us do the same so anyone who wants
to learn may have the opportunity -- despite age or disability!
We can all keep on giving until it is time to exit this life. Healing
Touch does not require physical strength or high intellectual
capacity. Mostly, it requires an openness to learn, a centered
heart and a pair of willing hands --things the majority of our
elders still have and want to use!
In 2002, although I was teaching many HT classes and had
an active HT practice, I found myself working in a long term
care facility again to make ends meet, this time as a part-time
staff nurse who had not done any mainstream nursing for over
ten years. I had recently experienced divorce and bankruptcy
due to my former husbands failed business during the .com
crash. My responsibilities from 6:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. each shift
included administering several hundred medications to about
thirty residents during a twelve-hour period, changing dress-
ings, IVs, enema administration, physical assessments, talking
to families, physicians and allied health care professionals,
and more documentation than I care to remember. This was
the most stressful nursing role I had ever experienced and the
ludicrous amount of medications I was required to administer to
these dear old folks was a real conict for my soul. I had about
one minute of quality time per resident on the average each day
to really be fully present. How did I get through this?
Having practiced energy medicine since the 1980s (rst with
Therapeutic Touch and then with HT in 1992), I knew I could
still work energetically and though I did not have quantity of
time to spend per resident, I could denitely provide quality. I
knew that Spirit was not limited by time or space, so in reality, I
had all the time I needed to provide Healing Touch if I believed
it and held the intention. I learned how to do one minute HT
treatments by focusing my intent strongly during my designat-
ed minute of quality time that I allowed for each resident. I used
my hands with a loving touch very intentionally -- I imagined
looking into each persons soul with love when I gave eye con-
tact -- I smiled to acknowledge the goodness and wholeness of
those under my care -- and I prayed for their comfort and heal-
ing. I sometimes had a few extra minutes to provide a real HT
treatment with specic HT methods, but those times were few
and far between. I will never forget working on a woman who
had a mental illness and was often very cutting in her remarks
to staff. Somehow the time manifested for me to administer a
Chakra Spread when it seemed she was dying. She looked so
sweet and peaceful as I worked on her. Although she expired
a few hours later, I was able to glimpse her wholeness and her
goodness in a way that I was not able to see before. That was
healing for ME as well as for her. To see her peaceful after such
a struggle with her emotions and thoughts all those months was
very comforting to me and strengthened my faith in our Cre-
ators benevolence and love for all of us.
When Janet Mentgen invited me to become her Assistant
Program Director in 2003, she asked me what I would like to
do within my administrative role in HT. One of my two goals
was to bring HT to all nursing homes. Not only would it serve
the elderly who need Healing Touch, but there is at least one
nursing home in every community, making it a perfect place to
spread HT locally, teach volunteers, family members, staff, and
interested residents how to give HT as a healing modality. This
is a very possible dream. Will you join me in manifesting it?
