RF LINK DESIGN IN A GSM BASED MOBILE

NETWORK
Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) is a
communications network that uses signaling system, which allows
intersystem communication by defning a suitable protocol. n ndia,
GSM systems uses two fre!uency bands namely GSM"##M$% and
&CS'(##M$%.)he study of the signaling system pro*ides insight into
the internal workings of the mobile communication system. )he pro+ect
designs a radio fre!uency link between Mobile station and ,ase
)ranscei*er Station (,)S).
)he -. link design includes the design of uplink and downlink of
Mobile station for a GSM network. )he path loss between the
transmitter and the recei*er will be calculated and the testing of the
link will be done using the simulation software /toll. /toll is a -.
planning tool used for GSM network planning. n our 0ro+ect we will
predict the path loss using 1kumura2$ata model or by standard
propagation model. )he 1kumura2$ata is a model particularly suitable
for predictions in the '3#2'### M$% band o*er long distances and is
*ery adapted to GSM "## M$% technologies. )his model uses the
terrain profle, di4raction and re5ection mechanisms in order to
calculate propagation. $ata models are well adapted to urban
en*ironment. 6e*ertheless, in order to make them a*ailable in a wide
range of en*ironments, it is possible to defne se*eral correcti*e
formulas, and to associate each one to each clutter class a*ailable in
the pro+ect.
)he planning and implementation of the pro+ect includes four
di4erent phases
'. /nalysis of GSM network elements and -adio 7ink 0arameters.

:. 0ower budgeting i.e. the calculations of gains and losses associated
with -. 7ink.
;. 0lotting of -. link using the software tool < /toll.
n GSM network further the links between ,)S and ,SC are
allocated and between ,SC and MSC are dimensioned. ,ased on the -.
link engineering and the choice of the ,SC model that has the best
capacity to the total tra=c demand gi*es 5e>ibility for the mobile
network design. ?e can use the tra=c demand in @rlangs instead of
number of *oice channels. ?ith a proper -. link design thus we can
build a 5e>ible mobile network with best capacity to handle the e*e
growing tra=c.
