March, 197^
Dear Friends in Christ; . .. \
The spiders are very busy at this time of year spinning webs in our house.
We knock them down and back they go to begin a new web -- they aren't easily
swayed from their purpose. "Let us throw off everything that hinders and
the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the i;ace
marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter
of bur faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning
its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consiaer
him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not. grow
weary and lose heart," Hebrews 12:1-3? New !Enternational Version,"
Don and Walter Smith left for Eastern Nigeria on
the 7th of February, It took us a wet^ to get
ready. In case you wonder what their loads
mi^t be it's like this:
1. Bibles, We always have an order for Efik
Bibles and hymn books . and some English , .
Bibles. This time at the Bible Society of
Nigeria every English Bible we tried to order they said, "out of stock."
So, we finally got the only one they had which looked fine on the oiit-
side but the print inside was tiny,
2. Medicines. This entailed a few hours of checking on all that we have in
stock in both houses. For malaria, filaria, craw-craw, boil ointment,
sulphadimadine, aspirins, antibiotics, codein, eye and ear ointments
you name it, we searched for it.
Books, This includes Bibles, notebooks, Thayers, Concordances, etc.
Also the reading material dealing with the present "problems" in the
East, Last week was spent studying all the Bible^ translations that,,
we own, , In the midst of this study I said, "We certainly have aloti. of
translations of-the Bible" and wondered if we had them all, I was
glancing thru the World Book Encyclopedia for something and rah across
this in "Bibles" Some famous Bibles, Vinegar Bible (1717)? "which sub
stitutes "vinegar" for "vineyard" in the vineyard parable, - Treacle
Bible (1518), which has the word "treacle" for "balm" in the line "Is
there no balm in Gilead?" Bug Bible ;(l55l), which has an incorrect read-;
ing in Psalm 9I, The line "Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror" by
night" reads "Thou shalt not be afraid of any bugges (bogies) by ntght."
Food boxes. This includes food for seven days, tin opener, a plate,. ci;p
fork, knife and spoon, ^
Water jugs. I filled seven gallon jugs and so did Eddie Smith. After
filling them we stepped over to Smiths house, . When we teturned home
the seventh bottle had leaked out- all over the hall floor in front of
the door, I picked it up and Don said, "There's a leak", I found out

There are four main phases to our work:
1. The Search The Scriptures Radio Program.
2. The nurturing; of the local Christians,
3 The medical work.
4. Our camp and Retreat program.
We began the Search the Scriptures Radio Program in 1961.
We are on the air every Sunday at 10 a.m. over the Western Nigeria
Broadcasting Station, We offer copies of the messages/anS.^^-'a
correspondence course in English and Yoruba. (We live in Yoruba-
land along the southern coast of Nigeria.) Correspondence students
continually increase. At the present time Brother Walter Smith
is writing a course on Acts of the Apostles.
The nurturing of the local Christians. There are five local
congregations and six more Church of Christ congregations in the
Gross River area in Eastern Nigeria, Locally we hold preaching
services dtlro luwviffals .Ain thoHWS. once or twice a year.
We are always in contact with the evangelists and the congregations,
We visit the Cross Rivei^"^Tce a year and supply the Cross River
Bible School (taught by two of our evangelists) with supplies and
lectures.
The medical program. We take care of all of the medical
needs of the local Christians, and the Christians in the East, and
also help those who are not able to meet their medical needs.
Every month we treat malaria, fllaria, worms, malnutrition, eye
and ear infections. We have had leprosy patients that we took
to the leper settlement at Abeokuta, fifty miles away; tuberculosis
patients that we've taken to the hospital, hypertension, etc.
J>We help all of those who have a genuine need. Presently we .are
trying to give an X-ray machine to the hospital at Otta.V'rKe^'
machine has been given to us and funds are now being raised in
the U.S. to get it over here. We have had to take some road
accident victims ii-O or 60 miles to be x-rayed. Funds for this
project can be sent to our forwarding agent. Please desigante
for the "X-ray Fund." Cciroi Scart>rDu3A, z-i-3

We are in the process of building additional buildings for
our camp grounds. We hold an annual three day Easter Fellowship
every year. In 19^ we exceeded our^jcapacity for sleeping
accommodations. We also hold al^fSay^of Prayer on October 1st,
Nigeria's Independence Day. We also host many Retreats and one
day pro, grams for youth groups from Lagos, We participate in -S
many of their programs when we can.

Dear Friends in Christ:
Two little boys rolled big black tires merrily down the path behind our
house. The tires are their "motors". Though their motors are bigger than
they are and they have great difficulty balancing them they count it all
joy to run and push with all their might. We hear the sounds of their
"motors running" morning, noon and night. Since they found these tires"
their father said, "they don*t want food again." Their father, Francis,
had come in from planting seventy-five tomato plants. Previously, i?hey
had pushed their motors to the land where their father was planting. They
had to get almost on top of the crop to see what he was doing, "V/hat is
it I have planted?" the father wanted to know. "Timati ni," (it is
tomatoes,)
As we walk in Jesus* footsteps each day we should count if all joy.
Though our taaks are bigger than we are and we have many difficulties we
should run and push with all our might. Sometimes we find the humidity of
the rain forests saps much of our strength, but we know that our Father is
bigger than we are and will help us to live above the insidious climate.
As the tires are constantly the boys companions morning, noon and
night -- so must our goal be always at our side -- the goal of winning the
sick lost souls for Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Our always faith
ful Father is constantly at our side supplying our every need.
At this writing there are many who are sick, and we need your prayers for
them -- not only for their physical health but that their spiritual health
will be strong. We want to tell you about one of the sick:
Bernice, the mother of the two small boys has been ill off and on for
several years now. Just recently she got much worse so that she could
hardly walk and we brought her here to do all that we can for her. The
local doctor at the Otta Hospital could find nothing organically wrong
with her, but her pain is real. We have now found a doctor who is working
with her, Kie basis of her pain seems to be FEAR, We do know that all
sickness is of the devil, and we know that he is attacking her. Her
husband preaches the gospel with pv7oer, A recent message of his was
"rejoicing in God always". He told us that we must rejoice not only when
things are going well but when things are not going well. He knows that
his wife's illness is a trial he must bear.
The pain is very often in her throat, and sometimes her sickness will
grip her jaws and prevent her from speaking. At times she will complain
that ,her. intestines are missing, _,From the belly the siclcness will go up
to the chest -- where she complains of pain -- and then on up to the
throat. From there it advances to the head, and the ears become heavy and
the head becomes heavy, and she will complain of knocking and scratching,
and many things being done inside the head. From the head it scatters
into the whole body, and in her whole body there is no comfort. This sick
ness comes upon her in the evening or after she has slept. She has
trouble getting to sleep and even then it may awaken her out of her sleep.
She has bad drearas and lack of appetite. She must be encouraged to eat.
She complains of tiredness. VThen she gets badly sick, she seems to have a
lot of fear in her.
John vrites, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out
fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The man who fears is not
made perfect in love." Bernice is a follower of Christ, Her husband
loves the Lord. Yet her mother always wants her to offer sacrifices to
idols especially new that she is sick. She has been raised by a
mother who believes that all sickness can be gotten rid of by appeasing
the gods.
We have been praying for her for some weeks and months now. We know that
God can heal her of this sickness. Wow we ask you to pray with us that
God ^d.11 heal her. For we know that "the prayer offered in faith :i^ll
make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned
he will be forgiven,' James 5^15. Also, prayer for her mother that she
will know Christ as her personal Saviour.
Please also include in your prayers:
Brother Daniel, whr has prostatism and will enter the hospital soon for
surgery. Though he is over 70 years old, Brother Daniel is young in the
Lord Jesus Christ, Pray that he will grow in grace and knowledge.
Brother Kudeyinbu, an evangelist at the Ebute Metta church, who is recover
ing from surgery. Pray tlst he will soon be able to preach again.
Brother Mcaaedu, the escangelist at the Bariga congregation, who is having
difficulty with a skin graft. Also, please pray for the Bariga Christians
as they are having disputes about laxid
Brother Francis, who is the husband of Bemide and evangelist at Egan and
Egun Tedo. Pray that he will have strength to resist the devil's attack
on his wife and that he will have the strength to comfort and help her.
Evangelists Lawrence, John, Felix and David who are preaching the Gospel
Also pray for Don Baughman and Walter Smith as they hold several meetings
in May in Lagos, Ibadan and Ado Eltiti.
April has been a busy but happy month. Tlie Easter Fellowship was a real
feast for all of us though the attendance, was a bit less than last year.
Preparing for the Fellowship and cleaning up afterward kept us all going
strong. Especially since our chief lianrlyraan, more generally called our
gardner, Emmanuel, became the father of Easter Abiodun on the first day of
the Fellowship, April 11th. On the l8th Don and Walter Smith left for the
Cross Elver in Eastern Nigeria for a conference of the Churches of Christ
at Ekeri. The Lord willing, they return-on the 26th.
Jane and Lisa are looking forward to the close^of school for this year and
being at home with us from June through August, Judy has just completed
her second year at The Cincinnati BibleSeminary and will be living and
working in Cincinnati this summer.
Thank you for your constant love, prayers and letters.
In His Wonderful love,
Don, Marianne, Judy, Lisa and Jane

fOiOTES and
EWS from
November 7^ 197^
Dear Christian Friends:
"No condition is permanent" is a common slogan on the vehicles of trans
portation in Nigeria, After spending almost eighteen years in Nigeria,"we
found this to be true when we went to immigration to renew our residence
permit.
We took the permit to the immigration office on September 20th to be renew
ed, We were told to come back to pick it up as it was "only a formality,"
When we returned on October 2nd to pick up the renewed residence permit, we
were told "your quota has expired" and to "write a letter to the Ministry
of Internal Affairs,"
We then went to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ask about the quota and
were finally told to "write a letter applying for a new quota," and "your
file is lost,"
This letter has been written and delivered to the Ministry on October 26th,
We were told to return to the Ministry on November l^th to receive their
answer. Meantime, we have made contact with a Christian lawyer, Emmanuel
Urhobo, who has taken immediate initiative, and is doing everything
possible for us to remain in Nigeria. PRAY FOR JtRCTHER URHOBO,
WE ASK YOU TO CONTINUE PRAYING THAT WE WILL RECEIVE THE RESIDENCE PERMIT,
The Nigerian field is white unto the harvest and the laborers are few.
The Walter Smiths are our only co-workers here on the field. The David
Reynolds family were never granted a visa to join us,
WE NEED FOR YOU TO PRAY ALSO THAT WE WILL BE GIVEN A QUOTA, If we receive
this, it would then be possible for us to remain in Nigeria, We have made
contact with Kent Taylor In Ghana and he is prepared to apply to the
Ghanian government for us to join the work there should it become necessary
to leave Nigeria.
We are prepared to accept God's will in this matter. However, at this
point, it is difficult for us to see any greater need than the Nigerian
field.
The bahlowo's witch doctors, superstitions, gods of stone, metal and
wood predominate the countiyside. Today, more than ever, the Light and
Freedom of Christ Jesus are needdd to bring people out of the bondage of
darkness.
PLEASE KEEP THE NIGERIAN CHRISTIANS IN YOUR PRAYERS, They are the leaven
of God^s love and need daily strength to withstand the pagans and the
Moslems,
Your love and faithful support through these many years have brought the-
Good News of God's wonderful love to many.
In Christian love.
