Influence of individual psychoanalytical psychotherapy in adherence to STD treatment
in a Specialized Attendant Service (SAS)

Background

Educational and preventive activities demonstrate more efficacy than individual
psychotherapy in promoting health quality and facilitating adherence to drug therapy,
included antiretroviral (ARVs).

Methods

We analyzed a universe of 25 patients, adopting the criterion of frequency to at least one
psychotherapy session. We tabulated, separately, all dates concerned to psychological
attention, from March to November of 2013; and infectology specific services, from January
of 2012 to November of 2013. We observed the scores of psychotherapy sessions by patient
and compared the absence behavioral pattern anterior and posterior to the first psychotherapy.

Results

We verified 40% attended to one session of psychotherapy, 20% two sessions, 4% three, 12%
four and 16% eight or more. Two patients, 8%, are not users of the SAS. Concerning to link
between psychological counseling and frequency to SAS, we certified psychological sessions
did not influenced in absence behavioral pattern, 84% of users. We considered undefined the
situation of 8%, for the following reason: there were few specific attendances from
infectology anterior and/or posterior to the last psychotherapy, making impossible
comparison. We ignored 8%.

Conclusion

Based on data, we concluded adherence to psychoanalytical individual psychotherapy was
low. This fact probably connect to the social representation of the psychologist as a specialist
in madness, hence, it seems easier to deal with STD prejudice than psychiatric disorder
prejudice. Besides, that practice did not modified behavioral pattern related to frequency in
the SAS. Thus, we considered not the abandon of therapy, but the emphasis in activities that
proportionate wide and concrete results, as education and prevention, reserving the mentioned
technic for specific cases.

the link between psychological counseling and frequency to SAS, we certified individual
psychological sessions did not influenced in absence behavioral pattern: 84% of users kept their
schema. We considered undefined the situation of 8%, for the following reason: there were few
specific attendances from infectology anterior and/or posterior to the last psychotherapy, making
impossible comparison. We ignored the 8% eventual.
Conclusions:
Based on data, we concluded adherence to psychoanalytical individual psychotherapy was low. This
fact connect to the social representation of the psychologist as a professional who takes care
of crazy people, ratifying it is easier to deal with STD prejudice than psychiatric disorder prejudice.
Besides, this practice did not modified behavioral pattern related to engagement
in infectological care offered by the SAS. Thus, we considered not the abandon of therapy, but the
emphasis in activities that proportionate wide and concrete results, as education and prevention,
reserving the mentioned technic for specific and complex cases.
