1. Assist the TA in getting the smoke going.

Observe the
streamlines. Take pictures.
Is it a symmetrical or cambered airfoil. Use your picture of
the streamlines to explain.
Cambered.
What is the extent of the boundary layer?
The boundary layer extends over the whole airfoil.
What is the extent of the wake?
The extent of the wake of relatively small and smooth.
Which part of the flow field is potential and which is not.
Why?
The potential flow field was far above and far below the
airfoil. Potential flow was present far ahead in front of the
airfoil. The flow remains undisturbed since there is no airfoil
to part the flow.
2. With the TAs help, set the airfoil at a positive angle of attack
( = 20 degrees) position.
Assist the TA in getting the smoke going. Observe the
streamlines. Take pictures.
What can you say about the flow over the airfoil now?
The stagnation point shifted to the lower surface of the
airfoil. The flow was much more turbulent in the wake. There
was circulation in the wake.
What is the extent of the boundary layer?
The boundary layer detaches from the upper surface of the
airfoil and it is consistent with the lower surface of the
airfoil.
What is the extent of the wake?
The flow creates a wake as soon as it hits the front of the
airfoil. The circulation of the wake is pretty significant.
Which part of the flow field is potential and which is not.
Why?
Potential field were non existent except for the extreme top and
extreme bottom on the flow field. It happens due to the angle of the
attack which causes the air molecules to move farther thus
disturbing the flow field.
9. With the TAs help, set the tunnel speed to 6 ms

.
10. Assist the TA in getting the smoke going.
11. The TA will turn on the vacuum pump.
Observe what happens to the streamlines as the pump
suction strength is increased. Take pictures at the two
extreme pump strengths (zeros and max strength).
What can you say about the flow over the airfoil at the two
extreme pump strengths?
Zero the flow remained same as when the flow passed
through the airfoil at 20 degree. For max strength the
Boundary layer at extreme strength came significantly
closer to the airfoil upper surface and lower surface.
What is the extent of the boundary layer at the two extreme
pump strengths?
The boundary layer came significantly closer to the
upper and lower surfaces.
What is the extent of the wake at the two extreme pump
strengths?
For Zero max strength the wake was pretty significant
and for max strength the wake was comparatively small
Which part of the flow field is potential and which is not at
the two extreme pump strengths? Why?
For both pump strengths Potential field were non existent except
for the extreme top and extreme bottom on the flow field. It
happens due to the angle of the attack which causes the air
molecules to move farther thus disturbing the flow field.

What is the change in the shape of the streamlines between
the two extreme pump strengths?
The streamlines are more distorted with the pump max
strength. The stream lines were less turbulent when
compared to the zero strength.
What happens to the stagnation point close to the leading
edge of the airfoil as the pump strength is increased?
The stagnation point moves up at max strength when
compared the zero strength pump.
12. With the TAs help, set the airfoil at a positive angle of
attack( = 40 degrees) position.
With the TAs help, set the tunnel speed to 3 ms

.
What can you say about the flow over the airfoil now?
The flow is significantly turbulent on the upper surface of the
airfoil
What is the extent of the boundary layer?
The boundary layer only extends from the leading edge lower
surface to the trailing edge.
What is the extent of the wake?
The wake extends from the upper leading edge all the way to
the end of the wind tunnel.
Which part of the flow field is potential and which is not.
Why?
Potential field were non existent. It happens due to the angle
of the attack which causes the air molecules to move farther
thus disturbing the flow field
What can you say about the stagnation point now?
The stagnation point is almost at the quarter chord length of
the lower surface of the airfoil.
13. Use the transparency sheet provided and trace out the airfoil
profile. Can you determine which NACA airfoil you are
testing?
14. Turn everything off.

1.6 Further things to address in your report
These are the minimum things that need to be addressed in your
lab report. More initiative will always be rewarded.
With the help of the pictures you took, explain the regions of
potential flow in the flow field at all airfoil positions. Make
sure you discuss your rationale.
Explain circulation theory of lift based on what you observed
(pictures) with pump on and off.

What does turning the pump on at max strength add to the flow
field?
It made the flow laminar when compared to the zero strength.
Based on your observation of the pressure ports and the
measurements you made give a brief summary of how a pitot-static
probe is used to measure the air velocity in the tunnel you used.
