ENPE 532 Introduction to Reservoir Engineering

(Spring 2008)
Assignment #1
(Due date: May 28
th
, 2008)

1. A core of 5.0 cm in length and 2.54 cm in diameter has a porosity of 19%. The core is
saturated with oil and water. The water content is 0.818 cm
3
. Find: 1) the pore volume,
and 2) oil and water saturations in the core.

2. A crude oil (viscosity unknown) was forced to flow through a core sample at a rate of
36.0 cm
3
per hour (cm
3
/hr). The permeability of the core was determined to be 190 mD
(by using other fluids). The pump pressure was read as 1.5 atm and the pressure at the
production end of the core was 1 atm. The core is 10 cm long and has a diameter of 2.5
cm. What is the viscosity of the oil?

3. A gas bubble is confined in a capillary tube of internal diameter 0.001 cm. Water is
present on both sides of the gas bubble. The contact angle of water on the tube wall is
15
o
. The gas-water surface tension is 72 dynes/cm. Calculate the pressure in the gas phase
if the pressure in the water phase is 110 kN/m
2
(kPa).

4. Ten long capillary tubes in a row stand in a beaker which contains some water at the
bottom. Water is allowed to enter the capillary tubes from the bottom and rise. The radii
of the tubes are given in the following table:

Tube # Radius (cm)
1 0.0005
2 0.0010
3 0.0015
4 0.0017
5 0.0019
6 0.0020
7 0.0021
8 0.0023
9 0.0028
10 0.020

Water has a surface tension of 72.0 mN/m and a density of 1000 kg/m
3
. Water contact
angle on the tube wall is 10
o
. Calculate the capillary rises in the tubes and plot the
capillary rise (in meters) with the tube number. (The air density is negligible compared to
the density of the water).

5. Data of oil-water capillary pressure vs. water saturation relationships for (primary)
drainage and (second) imbibition displacement in a core sample are shown in the
following table:
