Posture

1. Place a sitting pad and a cushion of appropriate height.

2. When seated on the cushion, place your right leg under your left leg. The left leg
should be placed between the thigh and calf of your right leg. (Close your anal
opening.)

3. Naturally stretch your lower back and place your right hand near the DanZen and
place your left hand on top of the right hand. Let your thumbs touch and let the
hands form a natural shape.

4. Straighten and open your shoulders
comfortably when straightening
your lower back without
excessively stiffening the spine.
5. Straighten your head then tilt it
slightly forward. Place your eyes a
comfortable distance on a point in
front of you. Bear in mind that
where your eyes fall maintains the
focus so do not let your eyes
wonder. Practicing with your eyes
open is preferred.
6. Place your tongue between your
upper teeth and palate. During your
practice, if saliva collects in your
mouth, slowly swallow it.
7. Adjust your meditation posture,
gently shake your body, relax those
parts of your body that are
uncomfortable naturally stretching
your upright pelvis, and place your
body and internal organs as if you
are hanging clothes on a hanger.

Breathing

1. Take one to three deep breaths in through the nose and out by the mouth.
2. Let your breath be as it is short or long, when it has become stable and relaxed
your practice has begun.
3. When your mind settles, your breath will also naturally settle, do not force
abdominal breathing.

The Method

Looking at your Mind

Observe your mind appearing as if you are observing a stranger, as if you are watching a
goldfish swimming back and forth in a tank, as if your sightseeing during your travels, or
as if you are trying to read someone elses mind.

1. If hate appears, know clearly that hate has appeared. If this hate persists, know
that hate persists. If hate disappears then know that hate disappears. Know clearly
when hates appears, persists, and disappears.
2. Likewise, know the mind that likes.
3. There is another mind that neither hates nor likes but is silent. Know when this
silent mind appears, persists, and disappears. Know that the silent and tranquil
mind is not the awakened mind.
4. The mind can be divided into eight types. Keep your eye on these different minds
likewise as above
a. The mind that likes
b. The hateful mind
c. The prideful mind
d. The fearful mind
e. The suffering mind
f. The peaceful mind
g. The angry mind
h. The greedy mind

Counting your Breath

When taking a breath, do not count but just inhale. When you exhale follow your breath
and count one in your mind. When you have counted from one through ten, count again
from one through ten. If you forget or make a mistake, return to one. While counting if
thoughts appear, let your thoughts be. Disregarding the thoughts, continue to count.

Keeping your Eye on your Breath.

Feel the inhalation, pause, and exhalation. If your inhalation is brief, know that it is brief.
If it is long, know that it is long. If the breath is warm, know that it is warm. If it is cold,
know that it is cold. If it is coarse, know that it is coarse. If it is silent, know that it is
silent. Likewise know the texture of your exhalation.

Holding onto a HwaDo

If you ask yourself why I live and die and you can not bear not to know the answer, find a
Sun Master and ask What is this that lives and dies? If you hear the answer and do not
understand it, and your mind is plagued by this question and answer, and can not forget
though you try to forget, can not erase it from your mind though you try to erase it and
the question and answer appears in your mind when your sitting, lying down, during the
day, at night, in sleep, when you like, when you hate, when you eat, in the middle of your
speech, know that a HwaDo has come alive in your mind and that your practice has
begun.

What is truth?
Hair grows from your front teeth.

Entering the Tranquil Mind

Every time a thought appears in your mind, know that a thought has appeared. When the
thought disappears, let your mind persist in this tranquility and clarity. But if another
thought appears, immediately know that a thought has appeared and return to the
persistent tranquil and clear mind.

When the beginner has completed his sit, release your tense thoughts; maintain your
tranquil mind for five to ten minutes. In this tranquil mind, quietly awake.

When you Awake

Rub your hand ten to fifteen times enough to generate heat in your palms, rub your face,
rub your hand five to ten times, rub your nose, rub your ears, rub your upper lip with your
index finger, rub the nape of your neck, and rub your flank. Extend your legs, relief the
tension in your ankle and feet and slowly stand up.

1. Rub your hands. 2. Place your palms
on your eyes.

3. Wash your face. 4. Wash your nose.
