Tackling M C Q (Multiple Choice

Questions)
The MCQs in your assessment contain a number of possible answers. You
have to choose the option(s) that best answers the question. The
three incorrect options are called distracters. There is a skill in answering
MCQs quickly. Try the approach outlined below, or you may prefer to adapt it
!tep " How much time can you allocate to each MCQ# Calculate. $or
this paper you will be answering %& questions in "'& minutes, i.e.,
average of (ust under two and a half minutes on each question.
)emember that you need not spend an equal amount of time on each
MCQ* some can be answered instantly but others will take time to work
out.
!tep ' Attempt each question. )ead the question thoroughly. You may
+nd that you recognise a question ,from your practice e-ams at home..
/0T e-aminers are cunning. They would have totally changed data
and1or requirement. 2n that way, familiar questions are the MOST
dangerous. You will lose more marks in them since you 3take them for
granted4 and carelessly overlook the changes in data and in the
question itself. /eware.
!tep 5 )ead the four options and see if one matches your own
answer. /e careful with numerical questions, as the distracters are
carefully designed to match answers that incorporate common errors.
Check that your calculation is correct. 6ave you followed the
requirement e-actly# 7 matching answer does NOT automatically
mean you got it right.
!tep 8 You may +nd that none of the options matches your
answer.
Re-read the question Most likely, you would have over 9
interpreted or under 9interpreted the data or the question
itself. Too clever# 2t hurts.
Eliminate any obviously wrong answers. Narrow down to focus better.
!onsider which of the remaining answers is the most li"ely to be
correct and select the option. :o for it ,even if you feel a
bit uneasy..
!tep % 2f you are still unsure, continue to the ne#t question. ;ikewise, if
you are nowhere near an answer after working for ' minutes on any
MCQ, skip it and come back to it later. Make a note of questions for
which you have submitted answers, but still want to return to later. The
computer will list any questions for which you have not submitted
answers. ,2f it is a <aper9e-am, you are entirely on your own to track
left9out questions..
!tep = Revisit questions you are uncertain about. >hen you come
back to a question after a break you often +nd you are able to answer
it correctly straight away. 2f you are still unsure have a guess. You are
not penalised for incorrect answers, so never leave a question unanswered$
%hat will be the &'(% )''*+(H thing you can do in any e#am.
