Its been well over a year since the Arrow-
wood Bridge was destroyed in the June 2013
oods, but the Alberta Governments Depart-
ment of Transportation is promising the bridge
will reopen on Oct. 15.
Construction has resumed and the depart-
ment is anticipating the project to be complete
on Oct. 15, said Christine Way, press secretary
to Wayne Drysdale, Minister of Transportation.
Extensive damage was done to the bridge,
which forced its closure in 2013. The river
washed away the bridge and approximately
60 metres of highway on the north approach.
Phase 1 of the work was to isolate the site and
put the berm in place. Phase 2 was for stabili-
zation of the north approach and the comple-
tion of the berm that would be required once
winter was over to divert the river temporarily;
and Phase 3, the actual repairs to the structure
and to the highway approaches.
It was originally anticipated that the bridge
would reopen this past June, but then, thanks
to more ooding which affected the construc-
tion site, crews had to wait until the water had
receded, adding to the completion delay.
Also pushing the completion date back was
the ndings of the contractor when they began
drilling new pilings. The contractor encoun-
tered what they call a sub-surface obstruction.
It impeded the drilling of the pilings and
we had to redesign in order to account for that
sub-surface obstruction. The bridge was then
redesigned and new material had to be ordered
and that caused a delay of about four to six
weeks, said Way.
If a ood of the same magnitude were to
happen again its possible that the bridge could
again be in danger because the existing bridge
is being repaired, not replaced. Way did say
there are ood mitigation components being
incorporated.
It was determined instead of replace the
bridge completely which would put it out of
commission for several years, that the repairs
would be made, said Way.
The addition of span/bridge extension 43
metres long - spanning over the washed out
section of the road from the 2013 ood - es-
sentially offers wider opening to handle more
ow.

To put it in numbers, the bridge opening before the 2013
ood was approx. 200 metres and now the bridge opening
(over the Bow River) after the addition of the new span/ex-
tension is approx. 240 metres, said Way.
The new design will be able to handle more ow beneath
it, and should mitigate the risk of severe damage should a
ood of such magnitude occur again.
The bridge, which allows access to Hwy 547, is a major
thoroughfare for those going from Siksika to Arrowwood and
beyond. Businesses have suffered since the ood shut down
the bridge. Way said she isnt sure what sort of nancial as-
sistance there may be to those who have been losing money
due to the closure, but suggests those individuals contact the
Alberta Government to look into it.
The contract for the bridge is $2.1 million, and is fully
funded by the disaster recovery fund.

CHS DynAgra is a leading North
American farm-owned cooperative and
global agricultural business. Farmers,
ranchers and cooperatives own the
company, which is committed to help-
ing their customers through domestic
and global operations.
On Sept. 11 the Standard and Carse-
land locations, in conjunction with their
Ag safety programs, donated to each of
the towns re halls to help cover ex-
penses of running their business and to
keep the equipment updated. A $5,000
grant was given to the Carseland hall,
and the Standard hall received $8,000.
Mark Biedenfeld, Canadian Region
Director for CHS DynAgra could not be
happier to see the company give back
to community members.
So CHS has been in Western Canada
for exactly two years now. We entered
the western Canadian retail market
place via the acquisition at DynAgra
and since then we have made some ad-
ditional acquisitions, said Biedenfeld.
The objective for CHS was to meet
the demands of the farmers and try to
meet their needs.
We look to grow and expand our
business as we determined farmer
needs and subsequent business oppor-
tunities, said Biedenfeld.
When you think of CHS and the leg-
acy companies that make up CHS its
an 80-year-old company. So today its a
large organization that utilizes the For-
tune Magazine rankings in the top 75.
These grants and gifts are derived
basically from the desire either from lo-
cal organizations and indoor operations
such as what we have here to indicate
or identify a need in the market place
that we do business in that our foun-
dation organization can assist to make
things better, said Biedenfeld.
Carseland re chief Mark Heilman
says the re hall is going to use the
$5,000 towards more safety wear for
the remen.
Basically its going to be used for
personal protective equipment. We are
going to order re retardant coveralls,
balaclavas, gloves and gas masks, said
Heilman.
Standard re chief Phil Faubion was
very honored to have received the
award for the one-year-old re hall, and
the money will go towards a new re
engine that is coming in.
Its going to help us a lot, we just got
a new re truck coming in at the end
of this month and this money would go
towards outtting it with specialty tools
and be able to support the community
with it, said Faubion.
One of our members used to work
for CHS and he started the process, he
left the company. My Deputy Malcolm
McKinnon took the bull by the horns
and continued on the process, it took
close to a year for it to happen.
The Standard re hall has 24 unpaid
volunteer reghters and Faubion is
in his 41st year of being Standard Fire
Chief.

The walls at the Family and Commu-
nity Support Services (FCSS) in Strath-
more have come alive with vibrant
pieces of art.
FCSS is bringing art awareness and
local artisans to the forefront in the be-
ginnings of a new art gallery.
This past summer at Canada Day,
Hope Bridges created four art pieces
with the help of young and old alike.
They used paint as a medium on large
pieces of canvas and had children and
adults paint their feet and walk across
the canvas to create the beautiful, vi-
brant pieces. FCSS, along with Wanda
Reinholdt (new curator of the art gal-
lery), hung them in the boardroom at
the Lambert Centre.
Dahrlyne Knause, FCSS programmer,
says, It is incredible that we (FCSS) can
celebrate the arts in our community
and are very proud to be a part of this
new initiative.
There are a great amount of artists
that often dont get recognized and this
will give them a perfect opportunity to
show off their pieces.
There is a large amount of trafc that
goes through the ofces at the Lambert
Centre on a daily basis from 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. that will be exposed to
the art on the walls of the boardroom.
They also hope to ll the lobby space
as well as the reception area as word
gets out and artists come forward. Re-
inholdt says that they will strive to get
to a point where the art can be rotated
and new artists can be given as much
exposure as possible.
Catherine Walsh, FCSS Coordinator,
says that their future plans include hav-
ing Gallery Nights with music, wine
and cheese evenings after the ofces
close for the work day. There will be
a contest in the near future to name
the new art gallery and have an ofcial
opening.
Reinholdt comments that this venue
and initiative both excites and hon-
ours local residents.
Anyone who would like to showcase
their work in any artistic medium to

The Music Together: The Joy of Family Music is a com-
munity of families sharing songs, instrument play, rhythm
chants, and movement activities in a relaxed, playful, non-
performance environment.
The new song collection comes out every semester for
three years.
Its a program available for children ages birth to ve
years old. Basically Music Together has been around for 25
years, starting in the States and they are a very researched
program based on that all children can sing with a beat and
tune, said Jodi Gordon, director and Music Together teacher.
So they developed nine different song collections, there is
three in a year, and theyre each a ten week session.
The sessions entail a variety of instruments in a sit-down
setting.
Its a sit down (of) singing, chanting , play instruments;
we have drums, sticks, maracas and bells, said Gordon.
Its a non-performance based program so mostly parents
and little ones attend even grandparents attend.
Gordon does expect something more out of the parents so
they can motivate their kids to sing as well.
The sessions run through fall, winter and spring on Tues-
day mornings from 9:30-10:15 a.m and 10:30-11:15 a.m.
Also, Wednesday mornings from 10-10:45 a.m. and Wednes-
day evening from 5:30-6:15 p.m. and 6:30-7:15 p.m.
All sessions take place at the Strathmore Civic Centre. For

Remembrance Day is coming a little
early to Rosebud this year with the one-
time presentation of Jakes Gift on Sept.
23.
Jakes Gift is coming to Rosebud
as part of Rosebud Theatres Rosebud
Presents series where we bring in art-
ists and performances to enhance our
season by offering more variety and ex-
tending our season. There is only one
performance in Rosebud scheduled
and will not be here for Remembrance
Day, said Heather Little, marketing as-
sistant for Rosebud Centre of the Arts.
Jakes Gift is a profoundly moving
play and encourages audiences to re-
member our veterans. It connects the
audience to one mans story and makes
the connection to all the heroic men
and women who fought and still ght
for our freedom and safety more tan-
gible and personal.
The script was written and performed
by Julia Mackey. It tells the story of a
Canadian World War II veteran return-
ing to Juno Beach for the rst time to
nd the grave of his brother who never
came home.
While on the trip, Jake meets a young
French girl who helps him confront
the ghosts of his past. The script was
inspired by Mackeys own visit to Nor-
mandy for the 60th anniversary of D-
Day.
Julia Mackey absorbs audiences in
her amazing transformations, seam-
lessly shifting between four distinct
characters including a cantankerous,
though warm-hearted, veteran and a
precocious 10-year-old French girl,
said Little.

By 2020, about 1 in 3 Canadians will be diabetic
or prediabetic. If you havent been screened for
diabetes and are over 40, check with your doctor.
Diabetes can be prevented through lifestyle
changes....weight-loss, better nutrition and exercise.
As we age, our eyes sometimes dont produce
enough tears to keep the eye moist causing dry
eye syndrome. This can also be caused by certain
medications as well. Its important to keep the eye
surface moist. Talk to our pharmacists about this.
We can check your medication list for possible drug
causes and recommend a suitable moisturizing eye
drop or ointment to help.
Pharmacists are often asked for something to
reduce heartburn. There are drugs available for this
but often just making a few changes in your life
might do the job.
Avoid eating less than three hours before bed. Eat
smaller meals. The more you eat, the longer it takes
for the stomach to empty which can contribute to
heartburn.
To reduce heartburn, try to identify which foods
cause it. Common culprits are tomatoes, garlic, milk,
coffee, cola soft drinks and chocolate. You might try
sleeping on a bit of an incline using a wedge-shaped
cushion. Lastly, lose those extra pounds that could
put more pressure on the stomach causing contents
to move up the esophagus.
If all this doesnt reduce your heartburn, talk to
our pharmacists. There are a number of products
available without prescription that may help.

Strathmore High School

Strathmore High School is hosting a presenter
from Dare to Care on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
The Dare to Care program is a fully comprehen-
sive approach to dealing with bullying and chal-
lenges within school communities.
This comprehensive approach involves stu-
dents, teachers, parents and the community in an
effort to eliminate bullying and other dangerous
behaviours from their schools and, in turn, create
an atmosphere of tolerance and respect.
The Dare to Care program helps school com-
munities, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, create
a common language, which then allows for more
consistent intervention and follow through when
dealing with challenging issues.
In the morning the entire school will participate
in an assembly with Dwayne Peace.
Peace is a retired 25-year member of the Cal-
gary Police Service where he spent the last seven
years of his career as a School Resource Ofcer
(SRO). He has a special talent for working with
youth, and a passion for helping to make a differ-
ence in their lives.
Requests for his dynamic presentations have
come from schools, parent groups, community or-
ganizations, corporations, and universities. Peace
is the cofounder of the Alberta Association of
School Resource Ofcers (AASRO) established in
1998.
His Life Skills Life Synergy for Youth program
cause his audience to think about the power of
their words and actions. Much of his work has
been in a proactive role with students, assisting
in making smart choices in their lives through the
use of his many presentations.
The assembly consists of an introduction and
creates an awareness of the various groups that
exist within schools and how students separate
themselves from others. The students will view
the Surviving High School video, which will be
followed by more discussion around body image,
bullying, suicide, the power of a persons words,
texting, sexting, self-harms, rumors, gossip, dra-
ma and appropriate charges under the Criminal
Code of Canada for these types of behaviours or
attitudes towards other people.
In the afternoon, Peace will be working with a
small group of leaders of various groups within
the school on ways to create a positive environ-
ment at Strathmore High School.
In the evening, Peace will be present a free
information night to parents. Entitle Lifes Chal-
lenges in Secondary School, this presentation
will peer into the lives of todays youth and pro-
vide and understanding of the pressures they face
every day. Participants will learn how students
struggle to t in with peers, while dealing with
bullying, harassment, stereotypes, teasing, ru-
mors, drugs, depression, suicide, violence, fam-
ily issues and more. Peace will be looking to the
power of words that we use every day, respecting
others and self-respect, body image and eating
disorders, texting, sexting, the impact of media
including video games on todays youth and the
importance of of honest communication.

Hope Bridges fall season
is off to a strong start with a
mix of familiar and new pro-
grams for the season.
There is a time and a
workshop for everyone,
said Director Wanda Rein-
holdt.
The goal is to provide op-
portunities for the commu-
nity to come and explore art
in a variety of ways.
For example, the Go Green
Up-cycling program, held on
Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-noon
at its studio on 3rd Ave., was
recently commissioned to
up-cycle glass jars into vin-
tage lanterns with lace for
an upcoming wedding.
We want to build pro-
gramming around what peo-
ple want as far as times and
spaces throughout Strath-
more and area. If there is
a program that you would
like to try but cant because
of timing please call the of-
ce so that we know what
people are looking for, said
Reinholdt.
Following its participa-
tion in a taste of art in the
Up-cycling program, Strath-
mores Parent Link Asso-
ciation approached Hope
Bridges about building a
relationship between the
two organizations to provide
similar workshops on Thurs-
day evenings at the Parent
Link Centre with a proposed
start date of Sept. 18.
These particular programs
will allow parents to bring
their children, as child care
will be available during the
workshop. Facilitator Heath-
er Hubbard, who is provid-
ing the creative support for
this project, said it will con-
tinue past December if there
is enough interest to run the
program again.
Though fall sessions have
already begun, registration
is open and ongoing for all
workshops. Pre-registration
is requested simply so plan-
ners aware of numbers in or-
der to have the appropriate
amount of materials avail-
able.

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Well, another school year has begun. In fact, this
is my 32nd school year start up. Do you know what
that means?
It means its the 32nd time Ive seen the terri-
ed, tiny Grade 10s come into our gym, so that we
can try and motivate them to work hard, join clubs
or teams, and make them believe that their high
school years will be the best times of their lives!
Now, dont get me wrong, I love teaching high
school, and I do want to make these years fun.
However, if high school is the best time of your life,
that would be awful peaking at 18?!
This latest rst day of school got me thinking
of students, and what we (or I) sometimes say to
them.
Handing out locks and assigning lockers is one
of the rst chores we have to do in the PE depart-
ment. I like to bring a little humour to this mun-
dane job. The kids get a locker and lock to use for
$5. Then, at the end of the year, when they return
the lock, they get their $5 back.
Now when the students rst come to me, I like to
say, okay, youve heard the explanation, its $5 for
a lock and locker in the boys change room $20
if you want one in the girls change room!
You would not believe the smiles this brings out
in a 15-17 year old kid, its like the smile you might
see on Christmas morning, as he (probably) starts
to imagine what having a locker there would really
be like. Oh, I tell ya, it warms the heart!
I always try to number of the students randomly.
I never use captains, because I dont want anyone
picked last. I get tired of just calling the teams by
numbers, so Ive tried to use names. Sometimes, Ill
go with a prison theme and name one team, the
Guards, another team the Inmates, and maybe a
third, the Young Offenders. Better yet, theres noth-
ing like naming teams the Thugs, the Hoodlums,
and my favorite, the Punks. That way, you can en-
courage them, and still insult them (which is the
most fun)!
A typical PE class might sound like this: come
on you little Hoodlums, get a goal! Lets go, you
Punk, work hard!
Again, to see their little faces beam with their
new team names, makes it all worthwhile!
I have softened over the years, especially when a
guy gets hit in the groin. If youve been one of my
readers for a while (all 47 of you), then you know
that I was also hit once hard, by an errant golf ball.
Until that horrible day, my line of choice to a poor
lad hit in the groin went like this: You okay, do ya
want ice, or did you want to keep the swelling?
Oh, you might think thats amusing, but it really
isnt, when about 10 or 11 guys chant it back to you
at the driving range! Needless to say, I stopped us-
ing that phrase, and now that Im older, and more
of a grandfather gure.
Ive changed it up. Now, when a guy gets
canned, Ill ask very seriously: why didnt you
get school insurance, you could have gotten your
parents some money or: I wouldnt count on
any Fathers Days in your future, Billy!
This way, they think youre all concerned, but the
laugh value is still there!
Of course if you have been a reader, then you
know my favorite line happens in kickball or slo-
pitch whenever the bases are loaded. In fact, my
students now yell it after I begin the line. It goes
like this, when I call it out: bases are loaded? they
respond with: like Mrs. Fule on a Saturday night!
To me, thats a thing of beauty! I mean, Ive
brought joy and laughter to teenagers who really
might need that in their lives. To me, its almost a
duty that I must perform for the kids, not me!
Sometimes, I like to bring in environmental
awareness to our indoor polo games. The kids all
have sticks with big foam ends, and the game is
played like oor hockey. The stick really does look
like a club, so I like to encourage my students to
shoot the ball hard with a hearty, club it like a
baby seal!
Its so educational to combine PE classes and a
concern for the environment!
So there you have it, 32 rst days of school down,
and if all things go well, maybe another ve!
This will give me some time to think of new ways
to encourage the youth of today, and as long as I
can brighten their day, but more importantly mine,
itll all be worth it!

FROM THE OFFICE OF
KEVIN SORENSON, MP (CROWFOOT)

The Honourable Kevin Sorenson, Minister of
State (Finance) and Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, welcomed the announcement of the
new Small Business Job Credit which is expected
to save small businesses more than $550 million
over the next two years.
The Small Business Job Credit will effectively
lower small businesses Employment Insurance
(EI) premiums from the current legislated rate of
$1.88 to $1.60 per $100 of insurable earnings in
2015 and 2016. Any rm that pays employer EI
premiums equal to or less than $15,000 in those
years will be eligible for the credit. Almost 90 per
cent of all EI premium-paying businesses in Cana-
da will receive the credit, reducing their EI payroll
taxes by nearly 15 per cent.
The Canada Revenue Agency will automatically
calculate the credit on a business return, ensuring
no new paper burden will be imposed on busi-
ness owners.
In addition, all employers and employees will
benet from a substantial reduction in the EI
premium rate in 2017 when the new seven-year
break-even rate-setting mechanism takes effect.
This will ensure that EI premiums are no higher
than needed to pay for the EI program over time.
Quick Facts
Canada has created more than 1.1 million net
new jobs since the height of the recessionone
of the strongest job creation records in the Group
of Seven (G-7).
In 2013, Canada leapt from sixth to second
place in Bloombergs ranking of the most attrac-
tive destinations for business.
According to KPMG, total business tax costs in
Canada are the lowest in the G-7 and 46 per cent
lower than those in the United States.
In September 2013, the Government an-
nounced a three-year freeze of the EI rate at its
2013 level of $1.88 to prevent it from rising to
$1.93 in 2014, saving employers and employees
an expected $660 million in 2014 alone.
Small businesses play a vital role in our lo-
cal and national economy. In line with our Gov-
ernments focus on creating jobs and growing the
Harper Government introduces

economy, the new Small Business Job Credit will lower taxes
for business owners and make it easier for them to create
jobs for Canadians. As the global economy remains fragile,
we must continue to do what we can to create jobs, growth
and long-term prosperity, said Sorenson
This is a big one. This announcement will result in a 15
per cent net reduction in Employment Insurance premiums
paid by small businesses over the next two years, said Dan
Kelly, President of the Canadian Federation of Independent
Business. A 15 per cent reduction in EI premiums will make
it easier to hire new workers or invest in additional training
to help entrepreneurs grow their business.

Correction

In the Sept. 12 edition of the Strathmore Times, in the article
Council discusses school time zone changes it was stated
that the time zones are 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. 1
p.m. and 3:30 p.m. 4 p.m. Those times are incorrect. The
correct times that the schools zones are in effect are 8 a.m.
9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. 4:30 p.m.

Linda Tucker has taken over the reigns at Wheatland Elementary School as
the new principal.
Shannon LeClair Photo
SHANNON LECLAIR

When students walked into Wheatland Elementary School
the rst week of school there was a new face waiting to greet
them. Linda Tucker has taken over the role of principal in
Kevin Lanes departure.
Tucker spent 12 years as the Associate Principal at Crowther
Memorial Junior High, and loved it, but was looking for a
change and new opportunities.
When a position opened up at Golden Hills School Division
in 2013, she took on the regional collaborative service deliv-
ery role. It was part of a cross-ministry initiative through the
Alberta Government with Child and Family Services, Alberta
Education and Alberta Health Services.
There were 17 regional managers. Tucker said it was about
looking creatively at ways to better serve children and fami-
lies with different needs. It was a wonderful opportunity, but
wasnt quite what she was looking for.
It was really more of an administrative job, so there was
no front line work with children or parents, or teachers or
educators. I was really honoured to have the position for the
year and learned a heck of a lot, but I really, really missed
kids, and parents and teachers and the energy and life of a
school, said Tucker.
She misses some of the staff at the junior high, stating that
when youre in a place for so long a sort of kinship is built
with the other administrators, but the leap to teaching and
working with elementary-aged children is opening up a new
realm of possibilities she is excited to explore.
To be part of a school, K-6 has been so much fun, said
Tucker.
I think what I am most impressed with in this school al-

through every classroom, and is becoming a way of being for
the students and staff.
One of the rst questions people have when a new admin-
istrator is hired is, whats going to be changed?
My job for this rst year especially is to observe, and to
learn and to listen and to gather the current practices and get
to know them better, said Tucker.
After the rst year she would like to work with the staff and
collaboratively gure out what can be improved on, what can
be recreated and redened.
Whats really important is to respect the practices and the
leadership thats been before you because they are all good
and they have done good things. To continually develop and
continually rene is what I hope to do, said Tucker.

The Travelling Mabels, based in Cal-
gary, have nally found theyre in for
a gig in Strathmore and couldnt be
more excited to hit the stage.
Weve wanted to play in Strathmore
for a long time, said Lana Floen.
She and her husband Keith have
played gigs in the past in a couple bars
in town with their group, but were
looking for an opportunity to bring
the Mabels into town. Keith is the
bandleader for the Mabels; he takes
care of booking, setting up, tearing
down and also plays keyboard and ac-
cordion with the band.
Its just so close, and every time
weve been to Strathmore the people
are just so awesome and I just feel that
wed have a good little following out
there, said Floen.
The Travelling Mabels consists
of the Floens and Eva and
Suzanne Levesque. The
four had all been musi-
cians in the same area
for about 20 years,
the Levesques had
a family band and
Floen and her hus-
band had a band,
so when each
would have nights
off they would go
and see the other
group play.
We just always
admired each
other musically so
we sort of met that
way, through the music industry, said
Floen.
Then about six years ago Suzanne
was up for the Player of the Year award
for the CCMAs, and Floen went with
her to the awards.
When we were out there, there was
a Royalty Records party and they had
asked us to get up to sing and we had
never sang together before, but we
did, said Floen.
By the time we got down we had
three cards and we thought oh my
God, I think we have something here.
So it was really cool and weve been
working on it ever since.
The past six years have been amaz-
ing for the band which Floen said is
best classied as having a country folk
roots sounds. They have released two
CDs and are currently working on a
third, and are getting busier and busier
with tour dates.
The Strathmore Musical Arts Society
contacted the Mabels to come to
town for a show this Octo-
ber. The show will be held

Westmount Elementary Schools hockey program
is going into its third season and is open for Grade
5-6 students that like to play hockey and want the
extra ice time.
Westmount hockey program is a fun, skilled-
based program for anyone who wants to come
and play. So we have some kids currently in the
midst of peewee tryouts and have kids who havent
played hockey before, said Wayne Funk, West-
mount school principal. So they get two ice times
a week that total two and half hours. One of our
instructors is Dan MacDonald, who is the current
coach of the Bisons, another one of our new in-
structors is Brett Vandehogen who is just starting
his teaching career in town.
The program has seen an increase interest from
players since it was started two years ago.
We have 40 kids in the camp and they are all dif-
ferent levels and skills, said Funk. We decided to
try and incorporate that (number) a couple of years
ago and its grown. Our rst year we had 24 kids in
the hockey program, last year we had 32 and this
year we have 40.
Westmounts program is strictly on the ice and
there is no classroom component to it.
We try and have them not miss any core time
and their time at rink is scheduled during (the
time) theyre in Phys. Ed, said Funk.
Parents are all for the hockey program, and sup-
port from the school district has been a huge ben-
et as well.
Golden Hills has been really supportive and
provide us a bus at a real minimal cost. We trans-
port the kids and their gear up there every day,
said Funk.
The players have really enjoyed getting quality
instruction on the ice from experienced coaches
such as MacDonald.
The real beginner kids were working on skating
and a little bit of puck handling, said Funk. Then
as the players get a little more advanced, skating is
still a huge part of the game but we work on skills.
Skills they learn are backwards skating, puck
control, and how to be creative on the ice.
According to Funk, parents have also noticed a
difference in their childs performance as a result
of the program and are all for having the program
available in schools.
The hockey program runs from September to No-
vember and again from January to March.

MacDonald all about fundamentals
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Dan MacDonald of the UFA Bisons coaches the Strath-
more High School hockey program.
We have just one group of 30 kids in the hockey pro-
gram, 28 guys and two girls, said MacDonald.
He really likes to have up-tempo on-ice sessions with the
players and making sure the players have a respectable t-
ness level and habve the basic fundamentals of the game.
From an athletic stance, we would like them to get a
really good fundamental, strong and want them to play
fast and you cant play fast unless you have really strong
fundamentals, said MacDonald.
Youve got be able to pass and receive that puck really
well, have to have good edges and dig in and drive hard.
MacDonald wants the players to be able to learn how to
drive to the net and be more puck possessive.
Skills are a major component that the players work on in
the program and repetitions are required to have success
as a player.
We work on their skills through repetition without a
doubt. We try to make it so were working on their skills
but at the same time not doing the same drills over and
over so that they still stay focused and interested, said
MacDonald.
In the camp, MacDonald just wants the kids to really
think that possession overrides
Positioning, and for the players to go out and work hard
to get the puck and be creative.
The program also involves nutrition and how to stay t,
which is taught in the classroom portion of the program.
The Strathmore High
School hockey pro-
gram got underway on
Sept. 15 at the Strath-
more Family Centre.
Dan MacDonald wants
the group to have fast-
paced sessions and re-
ally learn the fundamen-
tals of hockey as well as
staying ft off the ice.

Crowther Memorial Junior Hockey
School is dropping the puck for the
second year on their hockey academy.
Principal Ivan Wright wants the
academy to emphasize hard work and
for the players to improve their skills
while having fun.
We started the hockey program last
year (which) was our rst year and we
have enough students here and have
enough interest so we run two groups,
said Wright
What we generally have is a Grade
7 group of students and a Grade 8/9
group. In total we have 55 students
which includes goalies, defensemen
and forwards.
The goal for the program is to have
players of all sizes and abilities to work
on their skill set.
Our goal here is truly hockey skills.
The players range in all sizes and abil-
ity, male and female, thats the way we
want it, said Wright.
The school wanted to try something
new by developing the hockey acad-
emy off of the skating and shiny pro-
gram that was already on going.
Weve always done a skating, shinny
type of (program). We rented the rink
for a month every year as a part of the
Phys. Ed program. There was a genu-
ine interest from the community to
have something like this, said Wright.
The junior high age is one where
interest is hugely high and it gives in
a community like Strathmore an op-
portunity for extra ice time and puck
touch and skill work, said Wright.
Students in the hockey school have
two ice times a week and also learn
more about nutrition and healthy
choices in the classroom.
Its run through the school, its ran
as a part of our Phys. Ed and health
program. The hockey portion of it is
actually integrated into our school
schedule, said Wright.
So the two days out of the four, the
Phys. Ed is involved at the rink and the
other two days they ow back and do-
ing regular Phys. Ed here at the school.
Once the hockey program is done
then they ow into the health classes
and continue on into healthy choices
with nutrition of athletics, said Wright.
Many players from out of town ask if
there is a hockey program in the school
when they are interested in enrolling
in the school. Therefore, the enrolment
has been a positive step for the school.
Crowther hockey program returns
Crowther Memorial Junior High Schools hockey
program is available to students in Grades 7 - 9.
Principal Ivan Wright wants the camp to be based
on skill improvement and the players can be of
any size and ability.

Remuda Building, formerly known

The company specializes in post-

Basically any building that you see
in a rural setting thats not a house, we

We really want to focus on the lo-
cal area around Strathmore, Langdon,
Okotoks, whatever is within driving dis-

lot of the builders are from Manitoba or
they just build all over western Canada,

It allows you to do a cou-

to build quite quickly and ef-

bringing in a whole bunch

Post frame buildings are

there to help with the design
phase, building the structure
and then adding whatever
special touches the clients
would specically like.
What really sets us apart
is the fact that we can pro-
vide options for people and
that were actually willing
to listen to what they need
instead of pushing them to
whats easiest, said Vander-
zwaag.
While working as subcon-
tractors, one thing the men
had noticed was once the
shell of a building was built,
the owner was then left on
their own to gure out the
other details, other times the
owner wouldnt get what
they wanted, instead they
would get what a salesman
could talk them into.
Thats something that we
really wanted to change, we
wanted to make sure that
people were actually getting
the buildings they needed
and could use, said Vander-
zwaag.
Remuda staff are also able
to help with restoration proj-
ects. They can go into 10
or 20-year-old building and
make things look like new
again, a challenge that the
carpenters on the team love.
There are currently two full-
time journeymen on staff
and apprentices are always
welcome within the com-
pany.
Theres nothing better
than seeing your employees
get that education and grow
within your company, said
Vanderzwaag.
One of the recent builds
Remuda has done in the area
is the new garden market for
Four Sisters Farm.

mation about the company

The Wheatland Chiefs
want to build the 2014-
2015 edition of the team
on skill and size.
They also want to get
more goal production this
season, as wins came by
slim margins last year.
The local double-A midg-
et team, before their annu-
al Red-and-White game on
Sept. 13, had ve returning
players - with one still at
Bisons camp.
But not all was good
news for the Chiefs, as their
main goalie went down to
a season ending injury.
We had our one goalie
that could have came back
this year but blew his knee
out again. So he is done
for the year, he had to get
surgery, said head coach
Devin Olson. It looks like
we got a lot of skill to rely
on. We did not have a lot
of scoring last year so thats
one main thing were fo-
cusing on is getting some
guys that can put the puck
in and work hard.
If the Chiefs can learn
early and understand the
systems, then the team will
have success in putting up
wins.
I think its all learning
at the beginning and if
they can buy into the sys-
tems early and I think it
works better, said Olson.
If theyre a close team and
all on board, it works good.
Some guys (may) stray
away and get into trouble,
(but) usually at the begin-
ning of the year kids are
pretty good.
In his seven years with
the association, Olson says
that he has been fortunate
to have some talented play-
ers to coach and is hopeful
to have the same team this
year.
Weve had all but one
good year. I get pretty
lucky with some of the tal-
ent that we get, so when
youre on the winning side
it keeps everybody hap-
pier because no one likes
losing, he said. We had
hard working players last
year but this year there are
a lot of guys who are hard
working. And we have
some guys picked out ear-
ly who can put the puck in
the net.
Overall, the team has
gotten bigger in size, and
the goal is for those play-
ers to use a combination
of size and skill to put the
puck in the back of the net.
Its a big group and our
vets showed up in shape
and ready to go which is
nice to see, said Olson.
The Chiefs will start the
season on the road Oct.
4-5 against Cranbrook and
Lethbridge before hosting
their home opener Oct.
10 (7:30 p.m.) against La-
combe at the Strathmore
Family Centre.
The Strathmore Spartans got their frst victory of the season as
they defeated the McCoy Colts 26-18 of Medicine Hat at Strath-
more High School on Sept. 13.

The Strathmore Spartans senior football team
can breathe a sigh of relief, after securing their
rst victory in four seasons.
The Spartans were able to knock off the Mc-
Coy Colts of Medicine Hat 26-18 at Strathmore
High School on Sept. 13.
Coach Chuck Holloway was excited for his
teams rst victory but knows there is still work
to be done.
It felt great. Theyre actually feeling good
about themselves and they achieved something
and they can start moving forward as a team,
said Holloway.
The team had lapses in their opening week
defeat, but were able tighten the offensive and
defensive lines this week en route to victory.
The key to (success was) what we actually
focused on throughout practice this week and
we have been going (hard) everyday, said Hol-
loway.
The highlight of the victory was the running
game that left McCoy guessing all contest long.
It was the power running game, diving and
pulling out on the option and they werent aware
that we could run the option, said Holloway.
Last week we pretty much ran a spread offence
and once my quarterback (this week) got hurt
we had to revert back to the spread.
The running attack proved to be effective
throughout the game because the McCoy de-
fense allowed them the room to run.
Were actually a pass-oriented team, but thats
what they gave us, he said. So I saw that they
were weak inside on running and took what
they gave me.
Holloway added that focus will be for the next
few games will be on the offensive line to drive
off the ball, ball security and staying mentally
focused.
In other action this past weekend, the peewee
Spartans dominated the RV Rage of Cochrane
58-14, while the bantam Spartans fell 44-24 in
Springbank.
The Wheatland Chiefs held their Red and White game at the Strathmore
Family Centre on Sept. 13. The team is hoping to add goal-scoring to
the line up this season.

The UFA Bisons held their exhibition
tournament on Sept. 11-14 and now
know that there is a lot of work still to
be done.
If there is something positive to take
out of the games it is the effort was
there and the team now has a measur-
ing stick as to where they stand with
the other organizations in the Alberta
Midget Hockey League (AMHL).
We got a lot of work to do, I mean
thats what you nd out with exhibi-
tion games early in the season, youre
trying all kinds of players. Some play-
ers are playing out of position because
theyre good athletes and youd like
to see them play somewhere where
theyre not as used to, said Bisons
coach Dan MacDonald.
After going 1-3-1 in the tournament,
there is every reason for concern for
MacDonald and his staff with choosing
the right players to represent the team
this season.
The rst concern for this is are we
going to pick the right guys. Were not
scoring goals, but the reality is we did
not do enough things that goal scorers
do, said MacDonald.
He admits, it being so early in the
season, there will be many periods of
adjustment until the team understands
how to win.
There is a lot trials and of course
we would like to win more games, but
youre always trying to win. Its a com-
petitive game and you look to see the
bottom line, said MacDonald.
The Bisons opened up the tourna-
ment on Sept. 11 with a 2-2 draw with
the Red Deer Chiefs, then lost a close
one 2-1 to the Calgary Northstars. In
the nal round robin game they lost
4-3 to the Calgary Buffaloes. The Bi-
son lost 3-1 to the Calgary Northstars
in the semi-nal before pulling out a
6-3 win over the Buffaloes to close out
the tournament.
They have three exhibition games
left on the road in Calgary against the
Northstars on Wednesday Sept. 17,
then play Medicine Hat on Friday and
back to Calgary to play the Royals on
Saturday before the ofcial team has to
be picked.

Fifth-year Wheatland Braves head coach Keith
Klemmensen wants to see better results in the lat-
er stages of games and wants his team to keep a
consistent competitive level every night.
Expectations are that we will be bet-
ter at the end than we were at the start.
Its always hard to make playoffs in this
league, but I think well have a shot at
playoffs, said the peewee double-A
coach.
Klemmensen expects his team to learn
how to work hard in the games from the
puck drop to the nal buzzer in order to
get results.
(They need) to learn how to work. At the end
of the day when they come into the AA peewee
stream, they think they know how to work, but
they dont know how to work, said Klemmensen.
The team has a few returning players from a
year ago and those veterans will be expected to
lead the Braves.
We have three returning forwards this year.
They all have different strengths, ones an im-
mensely talented guy that works pretty steadily,
one is one of the ve per cent that does have that
work ethic and (the other) is a converted defen-
semen from last year that went to forward, said
Klemmensen.
Prior to the Red-and-White game on Sept. 11,
the coach was hoping to see a consistent effort
out of everyone on the ice to give him and his
staff a better idea of whom to select.
I hope to see a consistent effort
from the start to the end. Its impor-
tant that they establish in the evalua-
tors mind that they have the mental
toughness to go for the whole dura-
tion of the game, said Klemmensen.
It sounds so clich, but believe me,
most of them at peewee dont have
an idea what a whole game effort
is.
The coaches are going to change the system for
this young team to have an all-around improved
effort by each player.
At this level there are some things that are nec-
essary to do whether it works or not, said Klem-
mensen. You have to teach them how to work,
give an effort and teach them how to get out of
their comfort zone.
The Braves were in action at an evaluation tour-
nament in Airdrie on Sept. 13-14. Their rst league
is on Sept. 19 in Taber.

The Wheatland Warriors are looking to have a
high work ethic this year.
This will mean having the whole double-A ban-
tam team competing every shift of every game in
order to see results.
The team has a whole new coaching staff, who
have some experience in the junior hockey ranks.
New head coach Cody Brown is looking for-
ward to the challenge of being able to put a com-
petitive team on the ice night in and night out.
Were hoping to have a solid season. So far
through camp Ive liked what Ive seen (with) a
really strong back end that looks like itll be hard
to beat. Forwards too, (we have) been happy with
everybodys efforts so far, so hopefully we see
ashes of that on (the) team, said Brown.
When it comes to expectations for being the
new coach, Brown hopes to see improvement
game-by-game with the players.
To be successful for sure. We want the kids
to get better, that is priority number one, so that
will be the main focus going out of this year with
something and carry it into next year, said Brown.
The Warriors are going to have a younger roster
compared to last year, so there will be some learn-
ing curves as the season goes on.
Were denitely going to be younger, we have
a few returning guys, but its going to be a lot of
new faces this year, said Brown. Being a young-
er team were going to have to have a lot of them
young guys to step up right off the bat and our
older guys as well with a year of experience
well need their leadership.
After hosting an exhibition tournament this past
weekend at the Strathmore Family Centre, the
Warriors will open the regular season this coming
weekend.
Wheatland will travel to Taber on Sept. 19 (8:30
p.m.) before hosting their home opener the fol-
lowing day versus the Old Grizzlys. Game time
7:30 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Strathmore Thunder Girls Fastpitch
2014 had another great complete sea-
son. By adding two more provincial
medals to the seven-year history of the
club, that now brings the total to 11 in
that span. The program has progressed
at a good pace in those years now hav-
ing teams compete at all provincial lev-
els and excelling is very positive.
The U12A team along with U14B
Thunder club played a schedule con-
sisting of exhibition and tournament
play in Alberta, Great Falls & Kalispell,
Mont.
U12s included a tournament champi-
onship win in St. Albert, and capped off
the season with provincial crown in top
level of play in Alberta U12A division.
Team players on U12 champs are Nata-
lie Funk, Emma Goldade, Alexis Apple-
yard, Isabella McIntyre, Darian Breaker,
Alex Mackey, Annabelle MacInnis, Paige
McEachern, Ainsley Olson, Justine Lar-
son and Shelby Lane.
U12 B & C teams were playing in Cal-
gary Minor league and both completed
their season with third place nishes
in the playoffs for community based
teams.
The U16B took a new approach this
season by playing in the Calgary Wom-
ens Fastball League (CWFA), compet-
ing in division with U16 A/B, U18B
and Intermediate ladies teams in league
play. Then adding in some weekend
tournaments which included a tourna-
ment championship in Red Deer, the
team went into provincials and came
out with a provincial gold medal for
U16 B. Members of squad include Char-
ly Muenchrath, Taylor Kinakin, Shay-
lene Magwood, Jordan Mitchell, Libby
Wheeler, Megan Stefanich, Alexandria
Fawcett, Brianna Olson, Tatum Wathen,
Geena Schramm, Cassidy Hinz, Hailey
McCallum and Hannah Regehr.
U18A Thunder as well played in the
CWFA and took on the top level la-
dies teams. Tournaments were also in
Edmonton, Calgary, Helena, Mont. and
the Mothers Day tournament in Strath-
more in which they won the consola-
tion nal. Finally in the end they were
given a berth to U18 Nationals in Saska-
toon, which wrapped up the season in
mid-August. Team consisted of Kelsey
Spencer, Kirstyn Johnson, Jessica Mur-
phy, Alyssa Lavallee, Morgan Acker-
man, Shae Skytt, Shayla Pollock, Cassie
Sillner, Alicia Magwood, Kali Fournier,
Shae Lane, Shania Caragata and Alicia
Kennedy.
2015 preparations are now underway
as fall ball clinic sessions that go once
a week are in full swing for U14 and
under age groups. Age groups that have
teams planning to play at high competi-
tive level next season also have tryouts
with exhibition games beginning this
month.
Extra Noise - three players with a
long history in Strathmore Girls Fast-
pitch move out of the minor program,
but leave behind some very impressive
numbers to go along with their dedica-
tion over the last four years of competi-
tive play. The trio of Jessica Murphy .374
(bat avg.), Kirstyn Johnson .346 and
Alyssa Lavallee .385, all combined for a
total of 442 hits in over 1,200 plate ap-
pearances during the four years. John-
son also had 515 strike outs and 3.52
pitching ERA in that period. The three
of them with the Thunder have compet-
ed in two Western Canadians and one
National Championship. This fall, Laval-
lee is playing with University of Regina,
while Johnson and Murphy are playing
with afliated team University of Leth-
bridge in the Western Canada College
League.
