In our country, citizens vote to
make the rules. This is called
a direct democracy. For
example, in a classroom you
may vote on the classroom or
playground rules.

rule- Tells you what you
can or cannot do.
Sometimes rules are created by a group of people that have
been chosen by others. This group of people make decisions on
our behalf. We call this representative democracy. For example,
your principal might make important decisions for your own safety
and the safety of your school.
