EXPERIMENT-11
REFRACTION GLASS SLAB

Aim: To find the refractive index of glass slab.

Apparatus: Glass slab, Ray box or Pins, Protractor, White sheets, Ruler

Diagram:

Procedure:
Draw the outline of the glass slab on the paper and mark it as PQRS.
Remove the slab and draw the normal line and incident ray (at X) using a protractor,
on the face PQ.
Place the glass slab again on PQRS.
Place two pins on the incident ray (at A and B).
Keep your eye as shown in the diagram to place the 3
rd
and 4
th
pins (C and D), in such
a way to align all four pins in a straight line.
Mark the points C and D, join them by a straight line and extend the line to intersect
the line RS at Y.
Join the points X and Y (the refracted ray).
If you use a ray box, mark AB on the incident ray and mark CD on the emerging ray
and complete the diagram as shown above.
Measure the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction using the protractor.

EXPERIMENT-12
REFRACTION GLASS PRISM

Aim: To find the refractive index of glass prism.

Apparatus: Glass prism, ray box or Pins, Protractor, White sheets, Ruler

Diagram:

Procedure:
Draw the outline of the prism on the paper and mark it as ABC.
Remove the prism and draw the normal line and incident ray using a protractor, on the
face AC.
Place the prism again on ABC.
Place two pins on the incident ray (at P and Q).
Keep your eye as shown in the diagram to place the 3
rd
and 4
th
pins (R and S) on
emerging ray, in such a way to align all four pins in a straight line.
Mark the points R and S, join them by a straight line and extend the line to intersect
the face BC at Y.
Join the points X and Y (the refracted ray).
Complete the diagram as shown in the figure.
If you use a ray box, mark PQ on the incident ray and mark RS on the emerging ray
and complete the diagram as shown above.
Measure the angle of incidence, the angle of refraction and the angle of deviation
using the protractor.
