The Relative Advantages of Learning my Language by Amy Choi

Language can empower people by using it in a positive way. broadens
his or her social, economic and cultural horizons in quite a profound
way. E.g. In the short story The relative Advantages of Learning my
Language, Amy is empowered by being able to communicate with
people of the same culture and language
disempower people by degrading them or harming their self-image. It
can completely wipe out a part of someone's identity by using
derogatory language. It can leave a negative impression on people and
cause their emotions to deflate. E.g in the short story, The Most
Beautiful thing, language disempowered the female character, Emily, as
she was deaf and it ruined her self-esteem as she didnt feel comfortable
to try to talk so she uses a notebook to communicate with others
People can influence others in the short film The most beautiful
thing, the main character, Brandon, used language to influence Emily
to try to speak.

Personal experience difficulty in communicating with my family members
due to language and cultural misunderstandings when using English -
grandmother is not fluent in English ( speaks hokkien, a chinese dialect) I
dont speak hokkien language1 barrier made it tough to communicate
Learnt that it is good to pick up a new language as it can broaden my cultural
horizon
Amy choi grandfather was very traditional write poetry on paper rolls &
read it to her Amy was not interested and didnt put any effort into learning
eventually she lost the chinese language
