This document describes a laboratory experiment on determining the compacting factor and workability of concrete mixtures. It provides background on the compacting factor test, lists the necessary apparatus, describes the working method in 10 steps, includes a sample results table, and asks two discussion questions. The objective is to use the compacting factor test to evaluate how well concrete can be compacted and determine its consistency based on standardized classifications.

CONCRETE LABORATORY PREPARED BY NORLEEZA BT MUHAMMAD CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT POLYTECHNIC OF PORT DICKSON
EXPERIMENT NO. : TITLE : COMPACTING FACTOR TEST OBJECTIVE : This experiment is carried out to determined the workability of concrete mixture. THEORY : BS 1881 stated that compacting factor test as one of the test to determine the workability of the concrete. This test is usually being carried out in the lab and in specific condition i.e. construction site. It was a sensitive and more accurate test compared to the slump test and suitable for low workability of concrete mixture. Nevertheless the accuracy of the result will be reduced with the increased of the aggregate size (size exceed 20mm).
APPARATUS
1. Compacting Factor Apparatus
2. Compacting Rod
3. Hand Float
4. Trowel
5. Scoop
[3]
WORKING METHOD 1. The apparatus which consist of two hoppers, each in the shape of a frustum of cone and one cylinder must be in clean and dry condition. 2. Use the concrete mixture of 1:2:4(optional) and water cement ratio of 0.6(optional). 3. By using the scoop, filled up the concrete mixture into the hopper while the concrete excess must be levelled accordingly. 4. The bottom door of the hopper is then released and the concrete falls into the lower hopper. 5. The bottom door of the lower hopper is then released and the concrete falls into the cylinder. 6. Excess concrete is cut by two float slid across the top of the mould. 7. Clean the outer part of the cylinder and weigh to the nearest 10 grams. This weight is known as Weight of partially compacted concrete W p (refer result table) 8. The cylinder is emptied and then refilled with the concrete from the same sample in 3 layers. Each layer must be tamping 25 times using the compacting steel rod. 9. Level the surface and clean the outer part of the cylinder. 10. Weigh the cylinder with compacted concrete to the nearest 10 grams. This is known as Weight of fully compacted concrete W f (refer result table)
RESULT MIXTURE 1:2:4 (GRAM) 1:3:6 (GRAM) Weight of Cylinder
Weight of Cylinder + Partially- compacted Concrete
Weight of Partially - Compacted Cylinder (W p )
Weight of Fully Compacted Concrete, (W f )
Compacting Factor (W p /W f ) with 2 decimal points.

Define the mixture consistency by referring to the table below: CONSISTENCY COMPACTING FACTOR Very Dry 0.70 Very Hard 0.78 Hard 0.85 Plastic Hard 0.89 Plastic 0.92 Liquid 0.95 High Liquid 1.00
QUESTIONS 1. What happen to the concrete mixture when the concrete consist of: a) high content of the aggregate?
b) low water cement ratio?
c) high content of cement?
2. Why must the compacting factor test be carried out immediately after the concrete being mixed?
