We are off to a great start in fourth grade!

This week we excitedly anticipate our


apple picking trip to Pennings Orchard on Thursday. The second ELA and
Spelling assessments will be on Friday, September 19
th
.
Below is a summary of the important topics that will be covered this week by
subject. Nightly homework assignments will be written in each students
assignment pads.
ELA
Spelling We will be studying long a words: pale, face, crate, clay, stray,
cane, slate, today, bail, tail, break, ache, drain, faint, flame, claim, steak,
neigh, mane, graze, grim, plum, cash, neighbor, railway. The bonus word is
cytoplasm.
Grammar We will work on dissecting sentences into complex and
simple subjects and predicates. The following song goes to the tune of
Shakiras Waka Waka.
To write a good sentence
You must know the basics
Capitalization, complete thought, and punctuation
But it gets tougher as you get complex
You know you need a good subject and predicate.

The pressures on

Just keep writing first subject
Just keep writing next predicate
You have a complete sentence
Its time for editing

The subject has a noun
Whom or what it is about
The predicate has a verb
Saying what it is or does

Sometimes their compound with two nouns or verbs
Youll come to see that with time youll know it instantly

Reading We will be practicing the skills of summarizing and pulling the
main idea and supporting details from a text. Students will be exploring
informational texts along with Cinquain poems. The new vocabulary
words are: shimmer, eerie, swallows, climate, silken, lumbering.
Writing Students will be working on publishing their own Cinquain
poems.
Social Studies
We will continue our study of New York State history by exploring the many
natural wonders found across our state.
Science
Students will continue to study cells and learn the difference between animal and
plant cells. Please anticipate a Science test on Thursday, September
24
th
. A study guide will be posted and sent home in folders by
midweek.
Religion
We will explore our important roles as stewards of Gods beautiful creation.
Students will be working on a comic in which they are stewards and need to solve
a problem affecting Gods creation.
