Introduction
This instrument can be used to give a continuous reading with a
flowing sample through the test chamber, a sensor mounted in a sensor
hub.
Instrument measures change in capacitance of the AL203 sensor by
absorbing moisture from the sample, which is calibrated as the dew point.

Endee markets a full range of hygrometers using state of the art
electronics to the standards and specifications of M/s. Shaw Moisture
Meter, U.K. The instruments incorporate the most accepted and
accurate, reliable and long life "Shaw Sensors' having 'automatic'
calibration feature and are equipped with/without single or duel a1arms,
adjustable over the complete range as per the customers requirement.

There are various applications for the analyzers in research, defence and
process industries.

Instrument configurations
Construction
Instrument is made in aluminum enclosure. , with sensor hub. It is
mounted on the top of instrument.

Sample connections are on each side of sensor hub generally suitable for
6mm /1/4" dia tubing. It is suggested to use appropriate size s.s tubing
for moisture measurement.
.

Calibration & Operation
Procedure has been described with reference to Portable model dew
point meter. For on line model, calibration is better done by samples
of known dew points under continuous flow. Instrument after
calibration will start reading dew point in C when sample gas is supplied
continuously.

Calibration Check:
Shaw's Sensor is designed to give no increase in reading when reading
maximum moisture level. This mean that sensor with a range 80
0
C to
20
0
C will continue to read 20
0
C when exposed to samples with Dew
point of 20
0
C.

Operating Procedure :
1. Switch the instrument 'ON'.
2. Flush the sample through the process line. Ensure that the sample is
clear, free from dust, oil and condensate. Regulate / adjust the sample
pressure by a pressure regulator for a flow 3 5 L / min. at one
atmosphere.
3. Connect the sample to the instrument through PTFE/SS tubing
preferably.
4. Check the flow of sample and let it flow for 2-3 minutes.
5. Read Dew point on the meter between 1-2 minutes (if the reading
moves up the scale / wetter and then moves down the scale / drier, then
either the sample pipe was not purged enough before the dryer head
was raised, sample became dry during the test or sample was from a
stagnant source). If in doubt, take one reading & increase the sample
flow rate. Take the reading again. If instrument reads drier, it shows
that sample flow was too low or that there was a leak in the system or
sample was wet earlier.
6. Pass dry sample (air or Nitrogen) and see the reading come to less
than - 40
0
C within 3-4 minutes.

Response Time
Response time of a moisture detector is faster from dry to wet than from
wet to dry. Since sensor is kept in dry condition when not in use.
equilibration on measurement is faster in this design.

Power supply

Instrument is manufactured for mains operation and for flush panel
mounting .Instrument works on mains power supply of 12 VDC with
charger.

Sensor construction
The moisture sensor is manufactured from ultra pure aluminium wire,
which is coated with a hygroscopic layer of AL 203 and finally covered
by a film or porous gold. Gold film and aluminium core form the
plates of the capacitor. The capacitance value and its change in the
measuring range of each sensor is greater than any other device and is
related with the moisture content, water vapour molecules surrounding
the sensor enter the hygroscopic layer where, due to small size of the pore
and reduced energy,
they condense into liquid water. A dynamic equilibrium exists between
the water vapour outside the sensor and the condensed water within the
pores.
Molecules larger than water vapour cannot enter the pores, making the
sensor resistant to contaminants and specific to water vapour pressure,
regardless of carrier gas.
Thus response time of the sensor is general1y found to be as quick as the
system into which it is installed.
This is a unique feature of the Shaw sensor.
The sensor can even be used for moisture measurement in carbon dioxide.
However certain gases like ammonia, chlorine, hydrochloric acid vapour,
wet sulphur dioxide etc, which are corrosive to the sensor material should
never be used with the sensor.

Note:
1. DO not use corrosive gases like NH3, C12, wet S02 etc in the
instrument.
2. Do not use the instrument with sample having condensate, dirt, dust
etc.
3. Do not use sample flow less than 3L/min. and more than 5L/min.
at atmospheric pressure.
4. DO not use any other piping/tubing except SS/Teflon tubing for
moisture measurement.
5. Do not use the instrument with extreme humid or dry samples. If
the instrument has been used with such samples , then readings may be
affected slightly.
6. Do not use the instrument under pressure more than 1Kg/cm2 or
other than ambient temperature condition.
7. Put off the unit, when not in use.
Maintenance
A) Desiccant:
A sensor storage container is provided. Sensor is kept dry when not in
use by the desiccant (molecular sieves, granules about 500gms filled to
90% in the inner portion of the container . As the desiccant can dry only
a small volume of air or gas after each test and is to be isolated from
other gases. Its estimated life is approximately 10 years.
B) Sensor

1. Using 14 mm spanner or hand, unscrew the sensor from the sensor
holder. DO not leave the head without sensor fitted for more than a few
minutes to avoid desiccant saturation.

2. When refitting the sensor, push the co-axial plug firmly and don't
forget to fit the brass spacer, if provided.

B) Trouble Shooting
