Natural Evolution of
Geographic Charter for
Compassion Initiatives
Without the benet of strategic
planning, the city initiatives, the
core of the work of the Charter
for Compassion, have naturally
developed more specically in
distinct areas in the world:
Canada
There is a central Charter for
Compassion organization for all of
Canada; Canadians for
Compassion. Currently there are
fteen city initiatives and two
combined city/university initiatives
in Calgary and in Halifax. The
group maintains its own website:
http://canadians4compassion.org/
India
The School of Inspired Leadership
(S.O.I.L.), based in Gurgaon,
outside New Delhi, a Charter
Partner, is headed by Anil Sachdev
(GCC member), and has agreed to
develop the Charter
Compassionate Cities Initiative in
India. Anil has appointed a
coordinator for the project and
offered S.O.I.L.s current and past
business leaders contacts and
involvement.
Indonesia
While there is no central
organization in Indonesia, the four
largest populated cities in the
country: Jakarta, Bandung, Koto
Sukabumi and Surabaya all have
individual city initiatives. Charter
materials have been printed in the
local languages and there is an
active compassionate schools
campaign being directed by Peace
Generation, a Charter partner.
Jordan
The Charter for Compassion
Jordan is a local initiative led by
volunteers based in Amman. There
is a website: http://
www.charterforcompassionjordan.
org/ and a small group of
supporting Jordanian partners.
While there has not been
signicant activity within the
Jordanian initiative it appears there
is new interest afoot.
The Netherlands
The country of The Netherlands
rst started working with its
compassionate city initiatives in
2009. Initially Charter work was
under the auspices of Moses &
Aronkerk in Amsterdam and was
then, and continues to be, headed by
Monica Neomagus (GCC member).
Unfortunately the city sponsored
programs of Moses & Aronkerk
were discontinued in May of 2014,
and currently there is no nancial or
administrative support for Handvest
voor Compassie. Nonetheless, the
project continues through Monicas
guidance and the involvement of the
cities who currently operate
initiatives and those who are just
beginning their organizing. Handvest
voor Compassie sponsors a
compassion award each year and has
produced several books on the work
of its compassion projects.
Pakistan
Launched in June 2011, Charter for
Compassion Pakistan aims to increase
awareness of the benets of
compassion in order to decrease
violence and create a vibrant,
peaceful, and compassionate society
through the creation of innovative
programs, education, and training on
compassionate thought and action.
Through programs, tools, and
activities which allow stakeholders
and partners the opportunity to
explore the value of collaboration,
empathy, and compassion within their
own respective entities, Pakistan
works in three distinct areas:
Education: The Compassionate
School Network
Business: The Compassionate
Business Group
Social Media: Acts of Compassion
Challenge
The Compassionate School
Networks aim is to grow their
existing network to 5000 schools by
the year 2018 educating
approximately 2 million children of
Pakistan, to become compassionate
leaders in the decades ahead.

Sweden
Compassionate Sweden is a non-
prot, non-political and religiously
independent organization aimed at
implementing compassion into all
sectors in society. It works closely
together with leading individuals
within the social and environmental
sustainability realm in Sweden as well
as with companies who wish to act as
"Good Citizens" within Swedish
society. Along with the UK hub,
Compassionate Sweden is one of our
newest initiatives. Their website:
http://compassionatesweden.com/.
Karoline Klerk (GCC member) is one
of the founders of the Compassionate
Sweden.
United Kingdom
The UK hub is now in its formative
stage in terms of its geographic
expanse and the way in which it will
be administered. Professor Patrick
Pietroni (GCC member) will direct
the UKinitiative.
United States
Currently the Charter for
Compassion International administers
the U.S. city initiatives which number
124 to date. All global city and
country initiatives are processed
through the Charters ofce. When a
registration is received that relates to
a geographic hub, it is rst processed
through the international ofce and
sent to the regional hub ofce.
Asia and Pacic Healthcare
Hub
The International Research Centre
for Communication in Healthcare,
centered in Hong Kong and Australia,
with 80 members in 15 countries, has
agreed to support a regional
healthcare hub in 11 Asian countries,
Australia and New Zealand. This
initiative is being sponsored by Dr.
Elizabeth Rider (GCC member) and
will be hosted at Curtin University in
Australia. Details are currently in the
development stage. See the map that
