Faculty of Mathematics

From a young age, Julia was fascinated by the world of math

so when it came time to choosing an area of study, she knew
that she wanted to pursue mathematics but wasnt sure
which program would be right for her. Discussing her options
with her family, her dad, an alumnus of the BMath Computer
Science program at Waterloo, suggested that she consider
Computer Science. My dad used to show me how to take
apart the computer when I was little so I was always exposed
to the idea. As I really liked math growing up, I decided to
enroll in the program. With a global exchange to Sweden in
the works, Julia is hoping to take her studies internationally
as she considers pursuing graduate studies in Europe.

From designing intelligent software to treat patients with Alzheimers
to creating captivating special efects for movies, computer science
explores the practical and theoretical limits of computation and solves
huge problems for modern society. Imagine a world without the
trillions of computations carried out every day by the computers that
surround us. Social media, texting, and Internet searches are just
a few things that are all made possible thanks to computer science.

BRYAN, 3RD YEAR BBA/BCS STUDENT
Creativity. Leadership. Idea-building. These were the keys
to Bryans most recent success as a co-op student for
California-based tech-giant LinkedIn. Working as a Software
Engineering Intern, Bryan went beyond his job scope by
working with 5 other Waterloo co-op students to develop
a new app called EatIn which alerts staf when a dish
contains one of their allergens and allows them to rate their
latest meal. Using the tools of LinkedIns Incubator program,
Bryan and his team turned their knowledge of business
and computer science into a 6-week project. We got to
participate in the Incubator program. The program provides
up to 3 months of dedicated time to grow our ideas. We
pitched our project to LinkedIns senior executives and they
approved it. Having returned to campus for another study
term, Bryan hopes that others will contribute to his project
that is now open sourced.

Be in demand
As computers are used increasingly to solve biological problems, the demand for
bioinformatics professionals is rapidly growing. This area will be a source of limitless,
world-changing discoveries.
What is Bioinformatics?
A cross between biology and information technology, Bioinformatics is helping to
revolutionize how scientic research is conducted in both industry and academic
centres. This interdisciplinary science applies the latest developments in computer
science to a wealth of new biological data. The result? World-changing achievements
like the mapping of the human DNA sequence, a result of the Human Genome Project.
What you get out of the program
The Cheriton School of Computer Science and the Department of Biology jointly
prepare you to excel in this emerging eld by giving you a sophisticated understanding
of biology and the appropriate tools in computer science. Learn how to solve important
biological problems, study the interactions of small molecules with biological receptors,
and search for novel therapies for disease. In your rst year youll be admitted to
Honours Bioinformatics. You can choose to focus your studies by majoring in biology
and bioinformatics (BSc) or in computer science with a bioinformatics option (BCS).

ELISA, 4TH YEAR BSE
Elisa, a fourth-year Software Engineering student, was looking for a challenging academic
environment and access to real world work opportunities when she chose Waterloo. With a keen
interest in both computer science and software, Waterloo was immediately her top and only choice
because of the schools excellent reputation and renowned co-op program. Through her co-op
terms, Elisa gained valuable work experience in the software industry, both in Canada and abroad.
For her second work term, Elisa spent a memorable four months in San Francisco, where she learned
to adapt to a brand new environment. It was a great learning experience. It was a diferent type
of living and the work I did on co-op was really rewarding.
Outside of the classroom, Elisa maintains a blog where she writes about her life, school, and work.
Many of her blog posts contain helpful information and tips for future Software Engineering students.
The goal for her blog is to ofer advice to other students who are interested in entering the eld.
