A Note of Thanks....

There are no words that seem adequate enough to say thank you
to everyone who expressed their sympathy during the loss of our
beloved Derek.
Derek was a special part of our family and community and will
live on forever in our hearts. He was blessed with so many
extended family, great friends, neighbors, classmates and community members. We greatly appreciate the kind words, food,
monetary donations, donations of time, and the beautiful floral
arrangements we received.
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude and say thank you to
each one of you for making this difficult time a little easier. It is
during these difficult times that we see how lucky we are to have
been blessed with a loving family, friends and community.
Your expressions of sympathy will never be forgotten. Derek
will have a special place in our hearts, and through cherished
memories, he will live forever.

Cowboy legends are coming

to the State Theatre
ZUMBROTA Wyatt Earp,
Buffalo Bill Cody and Bat
Masterson are among those who
will be coming to the State Theatre in Zumbrota for the play, In
the Company of Legends. Performances are Saturday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday,
September 21, at 2 p.m.
The story centers around a Boston reporter sent west to interview
William F. Buffalo Bill Cody
and try to dig up some dirt to sell
newspapers. While the reporter
meets with Cody, both are surprised by his friends, who shed
some light on how they all became legends and why it might be
in the reporters best interest to
just write the facts.
The original one-act play was
written by the performers all
southern Minnesota men who have
portrayed Old West characters for

years on stage and in film. Tom

Doroff, who portrays Cody, is a
perfect lookalike. He has won several national competitions for his
accurate depiction of the old Army
scout and showman. His work includes performances as Cody for
national recording artists.
Rochester brothers David and
Rick Stuve portray Wyatt Earp
and Pecos Bill. You get to experience these men as they were,
with stories that are very engaging and entertaining, Dave said.
This is one of the few live theatre
shows that is Old West-based, and
the audiences really connect to it,
added Rick. We bring the audience into the idea of what a legend is and in the end make them
legends too. Pecos Bill adds a
touch of humor to the show when
the fictional character comes to
life. He delights young and old

with his antics.

Sticklers for authenticity, the
stage is an actual recreation of
Codys camp. All of the stage
props and outfits are also period
correct. We always have people
after the show ask us about the set
and our outfits everything is so
accurate that you cant help but
feel you have been pulled back in
time, stated Adam Lindquist, who
portrays the reporter.
Sheriff Scott McNurlin rounds
out the cast as Marshal Bat
Masterson. We are very fortunate that we have been able to
work together to put on this show
for the past years. The audience
reaction is very rewarding, and it
keeps us energized to keep performing the show.
Tickets for the show can be obtained by going online to
www.legendsplay.wordpress.com
or calling 507-744-2846 and leaving your name and number for a
return call. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door.

ZUMBROTA Crossings heads into September with classes in all

the arts, from creative writing to firing glazed clay in the raku method,
welding metal garden sculptures to fusing glass, plus a special way to
tune a guitar for a Celtic sound.
In, The Reflective Voice in Creative Prose, author Elizabeth
Jarrett Andrew will explain how show, dont tell, isnt the end of the
story when it comes to creative writing.
The reflective voice, used effectively, can give stories dimension,
texture, and drive. Well learn how to use reflection as connective
tissue, write lively summaries, create tension between the past and
present, connect the particular to the universal, and portray ourselves
as engaging, reliable narrators, Jarrett Andrew said. The class is
Saturday, September 13, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Also on September 13, clay artists can bring pots and other pieces
to glaze in the raku method. Raku firing is a unique process that
creates results different from traditional electric or gas firing. The
rapid heating and reduction (removal of oxygen through combustion)
of glazes gives a wide range of results, from the black smoke staining
of the clay to iridescent shimmering metallics. It is a very hands-on
process, from looking in the heating kiln to check temperature progress
to pulling hot artwork out of the kiln and plunging it into metal trash
cans for rapid cooling.
Lisa Truax teaches, The Dynamic Art of Raku: Firing Outside.
Firing fees will apply according to kiln space needed. A second
session on September 14 may be added.
People can enjoy a glass of wine as they create a floral painting with
step-by-step guidance, or as they create fused glass trinkets such as
pendants or keychain ornaments, at two September classes. Wine
and Poppies with artist Beth Bacon is Thursday, September 18, and
Glass Trinkets and Wine with Connie Beckers is Friday, September
26.
Custom Irons Kelly Ludeking will teach students how to use a
MIG wire-feed welder and stick welder to create metal garden sculptures. This popular class can be taken on Saturday or Sunday, September 20 or 21, or students can attend both days with a discount on the
daily price.
Shoppers can enjoy the Zumbro River Art Splash on September 20,
and their children can enjoy two different Klutz activities anytime
between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
A new six-week beginning pottery wheel class with instructor
Tracy Calmes starts on Sunday, September 21, from 5 p.m. to 7:30
p.m. This class teaches the basics so students can become a clay studio
member, if they choose, or just learn how to wedge clay, center on the
wheel, and shape pieces.
Beckers, known as the Goddess of Glass, also teaches Intermediate Glass Fusing, on Saturday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 1
p.m. Students will make large decorative and functional plates in this
class.
Inspirational writing instructor Rosanne Bane, author of Around
the Writers Block, leads two fast-paced classes on September 27.
They are, Writing Kickstart, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and The Six
Stages of the Creative Process, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Musicians can learn about a special method of guitar tuning sometimes called Celtic tuning, in An Introduction to DADGAD for
Guitar, from international recording and performing artist Sarah
McQuaid. She wrote the book on the method: The Irish DADGAD
Guitar Book, to be exact. The class runs 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., prior to
an evening concert by McQuaid at Crossings.
For more information about any of these classes, go to

Speeding up government: DNR

achieves 99 percent permit efficiency
The Department of Natural Resources reports it has met targets for
expediting environmental permit decisions for industry and other
entities 99 percent of the time.
The findings are part of the agencys latest report on permitting
efficiency. An executive order signed by Gov. Mark Dayton in 2011
directs the DNR and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to issue
decisions on permit requests within 150 days. The permit decision
goal is now law.
Using the 150-day benchmark, each year the agencies report their
performance to the Minnesota Legislature.
The DNR reports on the efficiency of permitting in water appropriations, public waters work, aquatic plant management, endangered
species takings, and mining.
In fiscal year 2014, the DNR approved or denied 6,862 permits, or
99 percent, within 150 days of receiving a complete application.
In many cases, DNR staff was able to issue decisions on permits in
a few weeks or less.
I think this demonstrates that the DNR is responsive to stakeholders that require speedy review of their permit requests, while still
protecting the states natural resources, said DNR Commissioner
Tom Landwehr.
For the 69 applications that took longer than the benchmark, lack of
staff was the most often cited reason. When the DNR fails to meet the
150-day goal, the agency is required to report the reasons, steps it will
take to complete action on the application and the expected timeline.

Minnesota DNR awarded $969,000

to protect coastal resources
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was recently
awarded $969,000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support Minnesotas Lake Superior Coastal
Program (MLSCP).
This is quite a boost for the North Shore of Lake Superior, said
Amber Westerbur, MLSCP manager. With the money, we will give
grants for local projects. Well also be able to provide data, information, tools, training and technical assistance to communities, agencies
and organizations working to solve issues that impact Lake Superior
and its coast.
MLSCP is a voluntary program housed within the DNR that administers the states federally approved coastal management program.
Minnesotas coastal program focuses on protecting, restoring and
responsibly developing the states coastal communities and resources.
Each year, the program offers competitive grants with money from
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The grants
help fund local projects that meet the goals of the national Coastal
Zone Management Act. Eight projects were selected to be part of this
years award. These projects will:
Develop the second phase of a plan to improve wayside rest areas
along the North Shore Scenic Drive.
Continue to inventory culverts along roads in southeastern St.
Louis County.
Conduct a scoping exercise for the unbuilt portions of the GitchiGami State Trail, including planning level designs, cost estimates,
and strategies for completion.
Raise awareness about invasive species and how to combat them
in Cook County through a public outreach campaign.
Deliver woodland stewardship training to private landowners
along the North Shore, introducing them to forest management and
restoration, mapping techniques, wildlife enhancement opportunities, and planning for future ownership.
Analyze energy use at the Clair Nelson Center in Finland and
create interpretive signs and displays to educate visitors about energy
efficient technologies used at the center.
Test the feasibility of restoring aquatic plants in the St. Louis River
Area of Concern in Duluth.
Install an interpretive boardwalk along the Baptism River in
Finland.
Local units of government and community organizations interested
in applying for projects or that have a need for technical assistance in
the programs service area can learn more about eligibility and available services by contacting Westerbur at 218-834-1445 or
amber.westerbur@state.mn.us.

DNR asks sharp-tailed grouse

and prairie chicken hunters
for wing samples
Sharp-tailed grouse and prairie chicken hunters can voluntarily
submit one wing from each bird they harvest in Minnesota for a
Department of Natural Resources study that aims to better understand
how these birds move through the landscape.
We want to better understand how areas of habitat are connected or
not connected to each other and identify factors that limit movements
of prairie grouse, said Charlotte Roy, DNR grouse project leader.
With this information, we can prioritize conservation actions and
target areas that are likely to produce the most benefit.
In addition to the wings, the DNR is asking hunters to send the GPS
coordinates of where each bird was harvested. Coordinates can be
found using a variety of devices such as hand-held GPS devices and
smartphone applications. Mapping websites such as Google Maps on
a desktop computer also can be used. If GPS coordinates are not
available, township, range, section and quarter-section information is
useful but GPS coordinates are preferred.
We will use this location information along with a genetic sample
from the wing to examine how genetic variability occurs over the
landscape, Roy said. By knowing this we can use this information
to better adapt our habitat management strategies.
Wings should be sent in paper envelopes. For specific directions on
how to submit the wing and for more information, see www.mndnr.gov/
hunting/grouse; call Eric Nelson at 218-833-8630; or call an area
DNR wildlife office.
