Five Little Monkeys

Teaching notes

This comic is a simple rhyme which young learners can chant. Its a
good way to introduce students to the rhythm of spoken English and
give beginners confidence in dealing with bigger chunks of text.

The comic is included here in black and white and colour. The artwork
is by Sayuri Ono, a student at the Thai Japanese Association School in
Bangkok. Also included are flashcards for presenting the rhyme.


Suggested Use

1. Show the first flashcard and elicit that they are monkeys. Ask
how many?
2. Put the remaining flashcards on the board and use them as
prompts as you introduce students to the rhyme.
3. Drill each part of the chant, building it line by line.
4. Introduce a rhythm for the students to clap. A good rhythm for
this chant is clap, clap, clap-clap-clap (one, two, one-two-three).
The students can now clap while you say the chant.

5. Give out the comics. Invite seven strong students to come to
the board and write a line of text under each flashcard, so that
the chant is now on the board.
6. Mark the following stressed words and syllables on the boarded
text, and ask students to use a red pencil to underline them on
their comic sheets too.

Five little monkeys (one, two)
jumping on the bed. (one-two-three)
One fell down (one, two)
and hurt his head. (one-two-three)
Mum called the doctor. (one, two)
The doc-tor said (one-two-three)
No more monkeys (one, two)
jumping on the bed. (one-two-three)

6. When students are confident clapping and saying the chant, you
can repeat it over and over, with one less monkey each time until
finally there are no more monkeys jumping on the bed.
