Synthesis Title: K to 12 A New Step for Every Juans Future
Name: Bulanhigan, Joan B. Course & Year Level: BEED - IV
What do I need to

At the end of the module, the learners should be able to:
gain knowledge about K-12 curriculum;
know the relevance of K-12 program in the Philippines and ;

What do I need to
know?
K to 12 means Kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and
secondary education. Elementary education refers to primary schooling
that involves six years of education (Grades 1 to 6). Secondary
education refers to four years of junior high school (Grades 7 to 10) and
two years of senior high school (Grades 11 to 12), where it has the
specialization for students depending on the career they like to pursue.
The Philippines is the only country in the Southeast Asia that
has 10-year basic education system. The rest have the 11-15 years of
basic education. Studies show that if there are added years to childs
learning in school, there are high possibilities that he can contribute
more not only for his own but also for the country where he belongs to.

The low performance rate in the National Achievement Test of
the Filipino children on our past curriculum is one of the reasons why
our government pushed through the K to 12 program. For if they
implemented the newest curriculum, we can meet the goals that we
aim to target from the EFA (Education for All), MDG (Millennium
Development Goals) and BESRA (Basic Education Sector Reform
Agenda) by 2015.
The K-12 curriculum is not already new here in our country. In
fact, it was discussed here in the year of 1925 but it was not
implemented.
The K-12 curriculum was fully implemented in the Philippines
last school year of 2012-2013. The Department of Education trained
first the Grade 1 public school teachers so they can respond effectively
to the big changes that they will going to encounter as we change our
curriculum.
It was also great to reform our curriculum because there is now
a law that mandate all 5 year old Filipino children to enter Kindergarten
for free.
K-12 prepares our Filipino children upon entering college. As they
graduate from senior high and if they want to pursue the career that
they want, they are already matured enough to handle difficulties they
might go through.
The Department of Education wants also the Filipino children to
become more likely of being a Maka-Diyos, Makabansa and
Makakalikasan. Our guest speaker in our convocation once said that: If
your pupil will grow as Maka-Diyos, Makabansa and Makakalikasan,
you are an effective teacher already.
The product of K-12 program will be more competitive globally
and will be the best that they can be. We believe that K-12 is one of the
key to the development of Philippine economy and it will shape the
lives of our future leaders.
With the help of our government and stakeholders, we can all do
this!

What insights I have
gained?
The K-12 program is a learner-centered approach. The learner
should do more than the teacher whose role is to facilitate the learners
only. Teachers should find strategies and techniques that will enhance
the critical thinking and creativity of the pupils. Dr. Lorna Dino said that
we as future educators should never work harder than our students but
should work hard for ourselves.
Dr. Lorna Dino didnt just explained and elaborated the K to 12
curriculum but she also touched our hearts and inspired us to love our
students more and we should have the great passion in teaching.

What do I need to
do?
As one of the motivators of our Filipino children, I will challenge
myself more on how I can be an effective teacher. I should contribute
and do my responsibilities well. I will find easy ways that my pupils will
enjoy and learn the lessons quickly. I will join organizations that can
equip my skills or attend seminars that are related to profession that I
have chosen.
