Leadership style undertaken by the Susila Inspire

Analyzing the current work environment we can identify several leadership activities are
implemented by organization. As a subsidiary of Susila Pvt Ltd they were unable to reached
specified goals in early days of companys establishment. With proper analysis they were
convinced that marketing division unable to operate as efficient and effectively due to the poor
leadership. Even software developing division was good at their skills and involved in
completing successful projects, as a whole they were rarely recognized in the industry. A lot of
these problems were due to poor marketing strategy implemented by CEO of Susila Inspire Ltd
and also the lack of reputation as a person in the industry.

To overcome the situation mother company decided to replace CEO position with new candidate
and they hired Mrs. Samantha who having high reputation in the industry as a successful
marketer as well as an exceptional leader.

With this new appointment she took complete analysis about all the processes within the
marketing division as well as in development division with the help of IT heads in the division.
She wouldnt depend only with the pile of documentations and statistical data but she hold
several meetings with employees in both divisions and reviewed the organizational tasks and
performance. But lot of these conversations was focused on discussing about employees skills
and knowledge and their past experiences in work and also their problems with current processes
of the organization. Most of the employees surprised and impressed to know each other abilities
and knowledge but importantly given a chance to know him/her self better than before.
After the initial analysis she realized that one major problem of the organization was less
recognition in the IT industry. She knew that to overcome this kind of problem organization has
to undertake some innovative projects or market their product portfolio into a specific field of
society. As a solution to this she made decisions to hire required personnel who having necessary
skills and contacts for receive industry wide attention to the organization. Mr. A known as an IT
expertise and once served as the director of IT division of Sri Lankan military service was hired
as a consultant for the IT division. Also marketing expertise from another company has joined as
a new marketing leader for the marketing division.

After these initial changes she took another few meetings to introduce these new personnel to
existing staff and she made clear explanations about company vision and mission. Within these
conversations she explained lot of her experiences in her work life and how she managed to
overcome difficult situations by working hard, believing on herself, improving necessary skills
and knowledge and most importantly get necessary help from others.
In the end of these discussions employees were convinced that they are really capable of working
as professionals in the industry. They got inspired and energetic by knowing that they are having
exceptional senior management above them to monitor their paths and career.
With this positive environment organizational goals were redefined aligning with existing
competencies of the organization. During this process senior management work together
confidently and agreed on strategic path which organization should be taken. Executive
managers in each department have given the responsibility to structure their processes and
activities but align with strategic goals. Managers are willing to share ideas with employees in
the structuring process because they felt that it will ideally improve performance and
productivity of the unit. Employees are given individual attention in their work related problems
as well as personal problems. Senior people are willing to help and advice employees in a better
way. Most employees know far better than before about what kind of goals they should achieved
and they are feeling that success of project as an achievement of their personal goal.

So if we analyze history to present of the organization, it gradually transform from failure
situation to a successful environment. We can clearly identify that change of leadership brought
the necessary change to gain the current success. According to research studies, organization is
showing transformational leadership characteristics and activities.

Idealized Influence: Provides vision and sense of mission, instills pride, gains respect and trust.
Inspirational Motivation: Communicates high expectations, uses symbols to focus efforts and
expresses important purposes in simple ways.
Intellectual Stimulation: Promotes intelligence, rationality, and careful problem solving.
Individualized Consideration: Gives personal attention, treats each employee individually,
coaches, and advises.

Appropriateness of Leadership style to the organization
We think that most of the parts of organization needed this kind of transformation in their
thought process as well as behavior. Because when consider the employees their level of skills
and knowledge were and are being in industry standards specifically in IT development. But they
were unable to identify the way their skills could be contribute on achieving organizational goals
as well as their career goals. They focused routine work just only to complete a project.
Management personnel were also in a troubled environment of not reaching necessary financial
targets and being on poor recognition in the industry.

With the new change made to the leader and the change her brought on to the existing leadership
style can be recognized as the primary reason for the success the organization has been achieved
in today and it may continue into the near future as well. Employees and managers are being
inspired by CEOs role model behavior. New ideas and creativity has been introduced into their
work life. Specifically for IT division they are organizing brain storming sessions, technical
training sessions regularly which eventually increasing their performance and creativity on
routine works as well as personal life. Managers are feeling much more involvement in strategic
decision making and achieving overall goals of the organization because they are given
necessary responsibilities to actively contribute the improvement process. They tend to getting
away from typical risk-averse behavior when making decisions but having a thought that
achieving organizations goals as their personal achievements.

Does transformational leadership contribute to organizational success?
We agree that whole organization has been benefited by transformational leadership style. As we
mentioned thus far organization got through from difficult time period to a successful present.
We can clearly state that most of these success is due to change of leadership and the way
organization respond to the leadership positively. To assess the success we can focus on several
major components of the organization.

Employees (General staff)

1. Use of natural instinct to be inspired and aggressive on task performing
All employees from the IT division aged between 20 -30 and most of the marketing people
also in this age range. Because transformational leadership provides inspirational motivation
towards tasks, behavior and goals employees actively involve and care about performance
and effectiveness and achieving goals regularly. Also most of the IT projects are
implemented by a project teams then performing well among other groups increase the level
of productivity on organizations product portfolio.

2. Creativity leads to innovation
Promotion of creativity in work place is making chances to explore new ideas and sharing
information. IT division able to add these creative ideas into end products recently and
succeeded in implementing software products such as Most importantly let to
be creative made opportunities for some of understated employees to implement their new
ideas into realities and make good reputation within the organization as well leading in front
as a example to others.



3. Personal attention helps to overcome problems of both work place and life.

Because of great bond between parents and child in Sri Lankan culture, sometimes a
relationship of this nature in workplace definitely appeals for any employee. In Susila
Inspire leadership style, employees are closely looked after by senior management and
helping those to solve work life problems as well as personal conflicts. Senior personnel
are always available for discussing these problems. Reasonably this kind of relationship
advantageous to identify organizational problems earlier before they get into any worse.
