EC2 TECHNOLOGY

HCL infosystems Ltd has developed a new technology that can recover the data from a crashed system and that too in
less than minute.

The technology named HCL’s EC2 (Embedded continuity and control) boasts of consuming only 0.07 percent of space
to create snapshots.The new series of HCL laptops sports this latest technology which comes under the name HCL Non
Stop ‘Leaptop’ series ,these laptops will be able to recover the lost data completely in case of system crash and data
loss problems .

How this technology works?


The technology is software with a component embedded in the hardware that automatically stores and replicates ‘a com-
plete image of its own working state’ of a file including system files at regular intervals.

‘Research has shown that 95 percent of PC problems are software related and include accidental deletion, software cor-
ruption, problems of settings changes, virus-related system crashes,’ said George Paul, HCL Infosystems executive
vice-president.

What it can do ?
This technology will be able to recover data in case of :

• System crash.

• System corruption by viruses, spyware or Trojans.

• Accidental formatting of any of the hard disk partitions.

• Corruption of registry files & folders.

• Blue screen errors.

• System unstability after patch updates

Do’s
The new technology is compatible with Windows Vista and previous versions.

1.HCL EC2 Standard can have only one snapshot at a time. Users are strongly advised to take periodic snapshot of the
system to save all the current data.

2..HCL EC2 Standard will not work if there is a physical damage to the HDD / system, Therefore users are strongly ad-
vised to take periodic backup of data in an external media.

3.HCL EC2 is not an alternate to an Anti-virus. It is strongly advised to scan your system regularly with the most recent
Anti-virus software before taking a snapshot of your system. Update your Antivirus software’s virus definition file regu-
larly.

4.Clean the Disk periodically using the DISK CLEAN option in ABOUT menu available in EC2 to optimize the system
performance and storage space. This will defragment the snapshot.

5.To secure and manage your snap shot, it is recommended to keep a security password the EC2 console.

6.In the event you wish to uninstall EC2 from your system, it is strongly advised to take the entire system data & files
backup on to a network remote location or an external media. This is to prevent any data loss in case you have not been
able to uninstall HCL EC2 correctly.

7.HCL EC2 needs to be Uninstalled before proceeding with any operations like -formatting / partition change of HDD or OS
repair.

8.It is must to install HCL EC2 on all the Operating System if you are using multi OS in your system.

9.During HCL EC2 installation care should be taken while changing the location of the My Documents and Temporary Files to a new location
under the optimize your system performance page, after change, EC2 won’t monitor the new location if the location is in a drive which is not
protected by EC2.

10.In case HCL EC2 has been purchased as a stand alone software package, then before installation, it is necessary to “turn off” or “disable”
any existing Recovery Tool (including MS Windows Recovery Tool) or any encryption tool..It is also suggested to defragment the system HDD
and uncompress the HDD before proceeding for installation.
Don’ts

1.Do not try to boot a HCL EC2 installed system from an external source to modify, repair or Format the drive. The
recovery solution will fail to start, you may also lose data .

2.Do not format the drive or re-install the OS without uninstalling the HCL E C2 first. If you do so, you may lose data.

3.If HCL EC2 is not installed properly or it has been knowingly or unknowingly uninstalled from the system, EC2 may
stop responding and your system may not be protected by HCL EC2 Technology.

4.EC2 does not validate the status of the system or OS rather it just takes the hard disk contents and saves it for latter
restoration as it is. So it is very important that the user is aware of this fact. User needs to ensure when snapshot is
taken, the OS & other files are in a known good working condition otherwise when the snapshot is restored back by
EC2, you may see corrupted OS / missing files or unexpected result.

5.Do not install any Recovery Tool or any Recovery services along with the EC2, this may have conflict and your sys-
tem may crash, resulting in loss of data.

6.Do not use any disk cloning / imaging / partition / encryption utilities which access hard disk directly. Doing so may
interfere with EC2 operation and it may result in loss of data.

Limitations
1.HCL EC2will work only on HCL desktops and notebooks.

2.HCL EC2will not support on dual HDD. It will support only one physical drive and it can be the OS installed drive only.

3.HCL EC2TM works only on Windows XP / Windows Vista Operating Systems (all flavors), and will not work on any other operating systems
like Windows Server OS / Linux etc.

4.HCL EC2will support HDD capacity of only up to 250GB.

5.HCL EC2will not work if hard disk is physically bad / damaged or if there is any hardware problem..

6.HCL EC2 is not a real time backup tool. Any data or file user creates is protected by HCL EC2 only if a snapshot is taken after creating the
data or file.

You can not view the data protected under EC2 by connecting the HCL EC2 protected HDD to other system as a secondary HDD as EC2
maintains file tables in a proprietary format.

7.After installing HCL EC2 you should not increase or decrease the partition size/change drive letter after first installation. Not following this will
lead to data loss. Uninstall the EC2 to perform this operation..

8.HCL EC2 has no option of taking backup to external devices.

9.HCL EC2 will not protect the un-protected drive

10.HCL EC2 does not support RAID, SCSI / SAS Hard Disk.

11.In HCL EC2, program logs will display only the snapshot taken time. Further program log may not capture all actions accurately in this
version.

Error Message: "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator"

Resolution
Scan your computer with latest updated Antivirus.

This error is caused if the DisableTaskMgr restriction is enabled. To enable Task Manager,
try any one of the methods mentioned below.

Method 1:
Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe.

Navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \

Policies\ System

In the right-pane, delete the value named DisableTaskMgr

Close Regedit.exe.Reboot the machine.

Method 2:
Using Group Policy Editor - for Windows XP Professional

Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc and click OK.

Navigate to this branch:

User Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options /

Remove Task Manager.

Double-click the Remove Task Manager option.

Set the policy to Not Configured.

Internet connection gets slower

Some of us may find that after installing Windows XP,the Internet connection gets slower.A possible reason for this the
QoS (Quality of Service) installed.This service reserves 20 per cent of the bandwidth for itself,even with QoS dis-
abled.In order to remove this reserved quota, you will have to make sure you are logged on as Administrator .Go to
start>Run and type ‘gpedit.msc’.

Expand the ‘local computer policy’ branch,the computer configuration,the ‘administrative templates’branch,and the
‘network’ branch.Highlight the ‘QoS Packet Scheduler’ in the left window.In the right window,double-click the’limit reserv-
able bandwidth’ setting.

Then,on the setting tab,check ‘enabled’,and change the ‘Bandwidth limit %’ to read ‘0’.

You should notice an immediate boost in your Internet connection speed.

Problem Reported
In 4 machines OS to be reloaded due to virus problem.

Customer is having internet connectivity in 20 machines and because of that virus problems are high. We are getting

frequents calls because of this.

Resolution
Helped customer to load OS in the problem machines and loaded EC2 in these. Loaded EC2 in other working machines

too and took snapshot. Educated customer about EC2 and instructed him to store all data in D: drive. Whenever

problemcomes like file missing or problem or Blue screen of Death, customer will restore the machine using the

snapshot.

After that we never received a call due to OS or virus problem from this customer place.

Problem Reported
When you use start windows the following Dr. Watson error message may occur in Explorer.exe:

“Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is
being created”.

Resolution
Dr. Watson for Windows is a program error debugger that gathers information about your computer when an error oc-
curs with a program.If a program error occurs, Dr. Watson for Windows starts automatically. To configure Dr. Watson,
follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.Type ‘drwtsn32’, and then click OK.
By default, the log file created by Dr. Watson is named Drwtsn32.log and is saved in the following location:
drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson.

Registry entries for debugger programs are located in the AeDebug key in Windows. The Dr. Watson program is

installed by default in Windows, and is configured to run when an application error occurs .

To disable Dr. Watson

Click Start, click Run, type regedit.exe in the Open box, and then click OK. Locate and click the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug. Click the AeDebug key, and then


click Export Registry File on the Registry menu.

Enter a name and location for the saved registry file, and then click Save.
Delete the AeDebug key. Close the regeditor.

Problem Reported
An error message when system startup,see the figure

Resolution

This is due to Surabaya virus.It creates a lot of ‘.SCR files and also changes shell extensions for all drives.So when try
to

open any driver or right click on any drive you will be amazed to find “test Configure” instead of standard

“Open/Explore”.It also changes the registry to hide all the hidden folders and also disables ‘Folder Options’.

STEP1:Strat the machine with safe mode,and perform a full scan.

STEP2:: Delete file ‘Autorun.inf’ which allows the malicious script to run automatically when you click/double click on the
drive.

STEP3:The Second step is very important because you need to work with ‘Windows Registry’ .

Open registry editor.Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CURRENTVERSION/

WINLOGON.On the right windows modify or delete “LegalNoticeCaption” & “LegalNoticeText”.This removes any

message coming up in the startup

Enable the built-in master administrator account on the log-in screen
Vista contains a master administrator account but it is not normally visible on the log-in screen. To enable
it, open a command window with administrator privileges and use the command
net user administrator /active:yes (Make sure that you assign a password to the account.) To remove the
account from the log-in screen, use the command net user administrator /active:no.
