RCD and SCM
This guide is for building a Rotating Clock Divider (RCD) or Shuffling Clock Multiplier (SCM) from
the 4ms kit. The circuits are nearl identical! e"cept for some resistors (e"plained in Step #). $lso!
there%s different color &'Ds and faceplate graphics! and the firm(are on the $TM')$#*+ chip is
different.
Tools Needed:
Soldering iron
,lush snips
-eedlenose pliers
Get comfortable, get all your tools together, take a deep breath... and enjoy!
Step 1: Resistors
.nsert and solder the resistors. $fter soldering! snip the leads nearl flush to the /C0 (ou%ll be snipping
the leads flush on all the components after soldering)
The SCM has 1 resistors (see photo belo()
470 ohm x 3 (yellow purple brown)
10k x 1 (brown black orange)
100k x 1 (brown black yellow)
470k x 4 (yellow purple yellow)
The 9 SCM ress!ors
The RCD is the same! e"cept there are onl t(o 423k resistors. .nstead! one is a 4umper! and one is
completel omitted. (see photo belo()

Step 2: Capacitors, Diodes, Crystal Resonator, Voltage Regulator
Careful! Many of these components must be orientated correctly before soldering!
.nsert and solder the + diodes.
There%s a (hite or black band on
each diode that must go to(ards
the line on the /C0 (the arro( on
the /C0 points to(ards the band).

.nsert and solder the 2+35 voltage regulator and the #*M67 crstal resonator. The resonator can go in
either (a! but the 2+35 must bend over so that the black face (ith te"t is pointed up (see photo above).
.nsert and solder the 5 small capacitors. The can go in either (a8
100p0 (or 101) x 1
330p0 (or 331) x 1
1000p0 (or 101) x 1
021u0 (or 104) x 1
.nsert and solder the t(o #33u, caps. 9ne side of the cap is
marked (ith a (hite stripe8 this is the negative and it goes in
the round hole. The positive lead is longer! and it goes in the
s:uare hole. (o!e3 one o4 !he 100u0 caps mus! ben$ o5er !he

Step 3: Resistor Arrays
.nsert and solder the si" resistor arras. The dot on the arra must line up (ith the s:uare hole on the
/C0 (see photo)

10k 108pn array x 1 (one may be marke$ 4k7 on !he boar$, bu! use a 10k array)
Step 4: C Soc!ets, "eader pins, and Transistors
.nsert and solder the t(o #4;pin .C sockets. The notch in the sockets points to(ards the top of the
board (there is a matching notch dra(n on the /C0! too).
.nsert and solder the + transistors! making sure the flat side faces the edge of the board (to(ards the
4acks).
.nsert and solder the header pins (t(o #*;pin headers! one <"= header! one #"* header)

ou don%t accidentall put a
4umper there.
,or the RCD! omit the bottom t(o
ro(s of header pins. The have no
purpose on an RCD. .f ou
alread put them on! it%s 9>! but
4ust remember not to put a blue
4umper on those pins. See Step 1
for a photo of the RCD 4umpers.
Step #: $ac!s
0reak off the side tab on the 1 large 4acks (see photo on
left). ?ust bend it back and forth once or t(ice and it
should break off easil.
.nsert the 4acks into the /C0! but do not
solder them et@
&oosel place the faceplate on the 4acks!
making sure the top t(o empt holes go
to(ards the top of the /C0.
/ut the nuts on the 4acks loosel! and then go
back and tighten them all do(n. To avoid
scratching the faceplate! use a nut driver
tool! or pliers (ith the tips (rapped in
masking tape.
-o( solder the 4acks! and snip the tips of
the leads flush (ith the /C0.
Step %: &'Ds
The &'Ds must be bent 13A at a point
3.*B (#5mm or #1C=<B) from the back of
the head.
0end them so that if ou hold it (ith the
head pointing to the left! and the long
lead closest to ou! then the leads should
be bent do(n(ards (see photo on left).
Dou kno( ou did it right if ou can
insert the &'D into the /C0 and the
longer lead goes in the s:uare hole.
Do the &'Ds one at a time! so ou don%t
forget (hat color each one is. $fter
bending each one! immediatel insert it into the board and make sure the longer lead is in the s:uare
hole. .f ou measured precisel! the head should snap snug into the hole in the faceplate.
Don't solder the LEDs yet!
Make sure the &'D leads are not shorting
out to the board. The should have ample
clearance from the pads on the board (see
photo on left)
-o(! check our &'D colors
before soldering. /lug in a standard
Doepfer #*;pin po(er connector to
the header pins on our board. $ll
the &'Ds e"cept the top one should
light up. Eerif ou like the colors!
or s(itch &'Ds if ou don%t.
.f an &'D doesn%t light up! it might
be loose! so (iggle it. .f it lights for
even a millisecond! that%s 9>! it (ill sta lit once ou solder it. .f it still doesn%t light! verif that the
long lead is in the s:uare hole. .f not! remove po(er! remove the &'D! bend the leads the other (a!
and tr again.
9nce + &'Ds are lighting up! unplug the po(er and solder them.
Step (: S)all *ac!s
Mount the t(o small 4acks into the t(o top holes on the faceplate. 9rient them so that the ground tab is
pointing up and the spring is at the bottom.
0end the tab over on the left 4ack (FRotateB) so
that it hits the pad on the /C0. Solder it to the pad.
Dou ma snip the ground tab off if ou (ish! as the
photo sho(s.
Solder t(o (ires from the right 4ack (FResetB on
the RCD! or FSlipB on the SCM) to the CE< and
?$C>SG pads on the /C0. The signal tab (lo(er)
goes to CE< and the s(itch tab (upper) goes to
?$C>SG.
Hse some of the leads ou snipped off after
soldering the resistors or capacitors in earlier steps.
Step +: AVR C,ip
-o( that (e%re done soldering! it%s safe to insert the chip into the socket@ .t%s ver important to #) not
bend an pins! <) be gentle (hen inserting it! and =) line up the notch on the chip (ith the notch on the
socket (notch points to(ards the top of the /C0).
Step -: $u)pers: "o)e .ree/
.nsert the 4umpers as sho(n. The 4umpers are necessar for the SCM to function (ithout a breakout!
but for the RCD ou ma put 4umpers on and off as ou (ish. The suggested default setting is sho(n.

our &'Ds! but check to make sure the have not been bent and are shorting to the board. Check our

give the RCD a clock! the 4acks should all light up in se:uence. .f it doesn%t (ork! po(er it do(n
