From the Chiefs Desk By: Chief James Trzaski

I hope that all our members have had an enjoyable summer. It's hard to believe that September
is here and the kids are back in school. As the weather cools and the days grow shorter we
begin to think of Fire Prevention Week. We plan on keeping with the program we have run
for the past few years. Fire Prevention week is a great opportunity for us to showcase our
equipment, talents and our most valuable resource...our members. This year we are also going
to use our Open House to attract new members for Fire, EMS and Fire Police.
Beacon Hose Company No. 1 has been providing service to our community since 1899.
Certainly our first Foreman, George Butz, could have never envisioned our Department 115
years into the future. As time moved on, our Department has grown and evolved. The location
of Beacon Hose Company No. 1 has changed at least three times. The "job" has changed and
evolved and greater expectations have been placed upon us throughout the years. Today our
department delivers quality and timely services to our community. We have truly evolved into
a full service organization. Even during the 30 years that I have been a member, the complexity
of the Department has grown immensely. It is a testament to our members commitment to our
Department and Town residents , as we accept every challenge that is presented to us.
Beacon Hose Company No. 1 delivers the finest Fire, EMS and Rescue services to Beacon Falls
with skill, professionalism, integrity and PRIDE. During the past 115 years many aspects of
the services we deliver have changed. One virtue that holds constant is the pride displayed as
members of Beacon Hose Company No. 1. Pride is displayed in many different ways from
responding to calls, training to improve your skills, wearing a department shirt and attending
parades or events representing our department. Pride is a trait that isn't necessarily taught, it
must evolve through the culture of our department.
Although we may have joined for different reasons, and throughout the years have had
different amounts of time we can commit, we have a common bond....Beacon Hose Company No. 1.
I have always been proud to be a member of Beacon Hose Company No. 1 and enjoy the
opportunities to "sell" our department to our community. I challenge every member to display
your pride in our department. Stop down to the station, pitch in and help during our next
event, renew your commitment to responding to incidents. This is "OUR" department, it is up
to us to allow it to grow and evolve for our future generations.
Looking forward to seeing you around the station. Be Safe!!

BHCS MONTHLY SAFETY TIP Back To School Safety Tips
School buses are one of the safest forms of transportation on the road today. In fact, according to the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration, riding a bus to school is 13 times safer than riding in a passenger vehicle and 10 times safer
than walking to school. The reality of school bus safety is that more children are hurt outside the bus than inside as
passengers. Most of the children who lose their lives in bus-related crashes are pedestrians, four to seven years old, who
are hit by the bus or by motorists illegally passing a stopped school bus. For this reason, it is necessary to know the
proper laws and procedures for sharing the road safely with school buses
Check out our website @ www.beaconhose.com for more on Back To School Safety!!
From the EMS Director From: Joseph Chew
It has been an exciting month for Beacon Hose Company No. 1 EMS and we have demonstrated twice in the
past month our ability to provide the highest quality patient care.
On August 29th, EMS was dispatched for a Pediatric Drowning. Upon arrival, CPR was in progress on a two
year old male. The patient was ventilated by EMS members and actively re-warmed . After ALS intercept, the
patient was transported to Waterbury Hospital and then to Connecticut Children's Medical Center at
Hartford Hospital. On Tuesday, Gretchen placed a follow-up phone call to our patients father. The father
stated that our patient had fully recovered with no neurological deficits or Pneumonia!!
On Sunday August 31st, we were dispatched to a M.V.A. on Route 8. Our teenage patient had an extensive
injury to her cervical vertebrae. The patient was boarded, collared and transported to Waterbury Hospital on
a Trauma Alert. Due to our rapid transport and assessments, our patient is recovering at Waterbury
Hospital and the prognosis is excellent!
These two calls demonstrate how important our EMS services are to our community. In the coming weeks we
will be introducing a new medication to our service which has the potential to save many more lives. This is in
addition to the tourniquets, which we recently placed in service.
I want to thank everyone for their continued service and for their commitment to providing the highest
quality patient care to the citizens of our town.
Reminder..
On Sunday, September 14th at 9:00am, we are invited to join Oxford Center Fire Department and Oxford
