Task 2: - Using the hazards identified in task 1 complete the table below. The first hazard has been given as an example.

1 Kettle with trailing cord A child could pull on the cord and drag the kettle of hot water down on themselves.
2 Iron out in the open This can be tripped on and cause minor or hazardous injuries or even if it is left on can cause severe burns
3 Power cord is left on If someone is trying to turn off the kettle they can easily electrocute them selves
4 Knife left unattended A child or someone lower than an adult can harm themselves by using it incorrectly
5 Water spillage
This can result in someone slipping on the water which will cause injuries or even if they are carrying kitchen
equipment such as a hot food dish this can burn them
6 Fly in the kitchen A fly in the kitchen could be disrupting and cause chaos of trying to get rid of it which can mess up the kitchen
7 Window is open
The window can create a draft which can carry in dirt or leaves from the wind which can end up in food. It can
also blow out the flame causing the hassle of having to turn it on again

Door is open containing cleaning
products
With the door open a child and or adult can hurt themselves by banging it to while cleaning or cooking also a a
child will have access to cleaning products which they can use in a inappropriate manner i.e. eating it
9 Butter knife left unattended This can be dirty which people will use for preparation which can have bacteria in it
10 Pots left unattended The pots that are unattended can cause a fire which can burn everything
11 Cat in the kitchen The cat in the kitchen can cause chaos which can make a mess and disrupt the cook
12 Matches left unattended
Minors that walk into the kitchen that dont know how to appropriately use matchsticks may use it in a incorrect
way which can cause injury or a fire
13 Food baking
As the food is baking some people may not realise it is cooking and could touch the oven burning themselves or
it may cook for too long and cause a fire
14 Food on table
The food on the table may attract the cat into the kitchen which can be annoying for the cook having to leave
what they are cooking to deal with the cat







Task 3: - Using the Rules for the Food Technology Room below, create a poster, using
Microsoft Word, that can be used in the classroom to remind people of how to be safe
whilst cooking.

Rules for the Food Technology Room
Rules are designed to make-work easy and safe for both you and those
around you

The basic rules for practical lessons are
1. Bags and books MUST be left outside the room.
2. Put on your hairnet and apron before entering the room.
3. Wash your hands.
4. Work quietly and safely.
5. Clean up your work area when finished.
6. Put all rubbish in the bin.Wash and dry all utensils thoroughly.
7. Wash down the tables and sink.
8. Dry the tables and sink using the paper towels.
9. Wipe over the tables and sink with sanitizer.
10. Bins must be emptied at the end of each lesson.
11. All equipment used MUST be THOROUGHLY washed, dried and returned to their correct
position.
12. Ovens, stoves, microwaves and bays MUST be cleaned at the end of each practical lesson
and switched OFF.
13. NO licking of food or utensils.
14. Sinks are to be left CLEAN and DRY at the end of the lesson.
15. Equipment must be used for its intended purpose e.g.
Measuring cups - measuring food.
Knife - cutting.
Tongs - handling food.

16. DO NOT wash flour sifters.
17. ALWAYS wear your hairnet when in the practical room.
18. NEVER eat or drink in the practical room.
19. Listen to the instructions before starting to work
