I NTRODUCTI ON
The rel i abi l i ty, ruggedness, and l ow cost of
API - type round thread casi ng connecti ons, parti cu-
l arl y LTC, have moti vated dri l l i ng engi neers to
extend the use of these connecti ons i nto servi ce
condi ti ons wel l beyond the range covered by API
wei ghts and grades. Phen these connecti ons are
used on heavy- wal l casi ng, they are of ten equi pped
wi th oversi ze coupl i ngs to mai ntai n the i nternal
pressure resi stance of the coupl i ngs as hi gh as
that of the pi pe bodi es. In cases where cl earances
are ti ght and pressures and tensi l e l oads are
moderate, the connecti onsare equi ppedwi th reduced
outsi de di ameter, speci al cl earance coupl i ngs.
API - type round thread connecti onsare al so used i n
hydrogensul f i de servi cedespi te the f act that they

thi s paper) , make- up turns are based on the turns
of standof f betweenthe hand- ti ght posi ti onand the
power- ti ght posi ti on and range f rom3 turns to 4
turns dependi ng on the si ze of the pi pe and the
grade of the coupl i ng. Make- up torques are
tabul ated f or each si ze, wei ght, and grade of
casi ng.
If, however, API - type round thread connecti ons are
used on non- API wei ghts and grades of casi ng, or
are used wi th oversi ze or speci al cl earance

When API - type round threadconnecti onsare made up,
tensi l e hoop stresses are i nduced i n the coupl i ng
due to the i nterf erence between the tapered
threads. In servi ce, i nternal pressure acts to
i ncrease these hoop stresses. If we model the
