Report on Modal Analysis of a Hollow cylinder

Problem:
1. Determine 12 Natural frequencies for a hollow cylinder made up of Aluminum of Length 2m,
diameter= 200 mm, thickness 20 mm fixed at one of the ends.
2. Check the value of first bending mode using closed form solution.
3. Repeat the model from step 1 for free-free support and discuss the result.
4. Extra Credit: If the cylinder is filled with powder having mass 50 kg. Recalculate the
Natural frequencies.
Given values are E=70000 MPa, density (rho)= 2.7e-9 ton/mm3

A hollow Al cylinder of D= 200 mm, length L= 2000 mm and thickness, t=20 is modeled as 3D in
Patran. The Model is then meshed with CHEXA elements.
The model is then constrained on one side from all DOFs. The problem is then run in Nastran for
the first 12 natural frequencies.
The 12 natural frequencies and corresponding displacements are as follows:
Freq (F),Hz Displacement (d) , mm
1) 44.759 8.12
2) 44.759 8.12
3) 260.88 7.96

The above modeled hollow cylinder is now filled with powder having mass 50 kg.
A point lumped mass element is created at the centroid of the cylinder and mass, m= 0.05 ton is
assigned to it. (Since dimensions are in mm, thus mass is calculated in ton). The Model is then
meshed with CHEXA elements. The problem is then run in Nastran for the first 12 natural
frequencies.
