A striking example that proves that one person can make a great difference is
Wangari Muta Maathai, who won the 2004 Noel !eace !ri"e# Maathai, who was orn in
$en%a in &'40, was the first woman in (ast and )entral Africa to complete a doctorate
degree# *ince &'+,, -r Maathai has een an active memer of $en%a.s National )ouncil
of Women and was its chairman from &'/&0/+# At that time, women in $en%a had ver%
difficult lives and were not self0supporting# 1n addition, the countr% was experiencing a
drought and suffering from deforestation, oth of which created a numer of prolems
for local people and animals# -r Maathai was determined to do something to solve all
the prolems# 2he task was a difficult one#
3irst, there was the prolem of the lack of water# 2his was causing a health crisis and
famine, ecause not onl% was there no drinking water, people could neither grow their
own food nor hunt for it, since animals as well as people were d%ing from the drought#
1n addition, since people used wood as their main source of fuel for cooking, trees were
constantl% eing cut down, ut ecause of the drought, no new trees were growing to
replace them# When it finall% did rain, the land was so dr% and had so few trees to
asor the rainfall that flooding occurred# 2his, of course, caused %et more prolems#
-r Maathai started a programme called the 4reen 5elt Movement 645M7 in &'++# 1t has
several aims8 to protect the environment % planting trees all across the area and, at the
same time, provide 9os and training for women# :aving trees availale close to villages
so women would not have to search far awa% from home for cooking fuel was an
additional enefit of the programme# 5% the end of &'';, more than 20 million trees had
een planted as part of the programme#
1n addition to planting trees and environmental conservation, 45M has wider goals# At
the 45M <earning )entre in Nairoi, seminars are offered to raise people.s awareness
of the importance of protecting the environment and to encourage them to take part in
the democratic process of voting for leaders who will improve their lives and will work for
the good of the countr%# 45M has spread to other countries in Africa as well#

movement in over 40 countries which fought to have the huge amount of unpa%ale

them to ever repa% the dets their governments had incurred# 2he% also proposed that

As if that was not enough for one person to achieve, -r Maathai has constantl% worked
towards improving democrac% and human rights# *he has received man% international
awards in addition to the Noel !ri"e# 1n -ecemer 2002, -r Maathai was elected to the
