Past and Present
Gleneld Valves was established in 1852 in Kilmarnock,
Scotland. Thomas Kennedy (Snr) was founder of
Gleneld. Thomas Kennedy (Snr) came to Kilmarnock
from the West Highlands in 1824. He had realised the
need for an accurate device for measuring water
consumption, and with the help of John Cameron, the
local clockmaker, he perfected a design that was
patented in 1852 and became the Worlds First Water
Meter. A syndicate of four people was formed to
nance the manufacture and marketing of the
invention, and this led to the formation in 1896 of a
private company called The Kennedy Patent Water
Meter Co. Ltd. In 1865 the same individuals formed
the Gleneld Co. Ltd to make castings for the Meter
Company but gradually widened its interests and built
up an extensive valve and hydraulic engineering
business. In 1899 the two companies merged to form
Gleneld and Kennedy Ltd, which became the largest
company of its type in the Commonwealth.

The major growth period for Gleneld & Kennedy was

between 1871 and 1904, under the direction of Thomas
Kennedy Jnr (nephew of Thomas Kennedy Snr). Under
his inuence The Glen became one of the most
important hydraulic engineering concern in Britain,
with substantial export orders to most parts of the
world.

Over time business objectives were expanded,

opportunities were growing, notably in 1958 Gleneld
had Europes largest privately owned hydraulics
laboratory and in 1960 became the rst British
company to produce Resilient Seated gate valve.
Gleneld and Kennedy works covered 26 acres of land
as well as employed 2600 workforce.
In 2001, Gleneld Valves became a member of AVK
Holding A/S. Signicant investments were made by AVK
and Gleneld such as modernisation of the current site
in Kilmarnock, including a new coatings system in 2008
as well as new factory and product upgrades such as
new heating systems and cladding. With the vast
knowledge and experience in both Gleneld and AVK
immerged a new innovation of product designs such as
re-design of large diameter buttery valves.
Gleneld/AVK continue to strive to improve and further
develop the full product oering of valves, ttings and
accessories for water supply, gas supply, sewage
treatment and re protection thus rming our position
as one of the leading valve manufacturers worldwide.

Production Processes and Quality Management
Product Development
Product development plays a key role in the companys
activities. As part of a clear product market strategy,
Gleneld products have been re-designed and
improved in recent years, in an eort to raise
performance levels and reduce installation and
operating costs for the customer. Product development
teams have worked closely with AVK Tech, the groups
technology centre that develops new products,
production tools, equipment and production processes.
Changes to Gleneld/s product portfolio are based on
customer feedback as well as years of engineering
experience and analysis of product performance.
Rigorous testing is carried out on all products to ensure
that, as a minimum, they conform to the appropriate
authoritative approvals required, both UK and overseas.
In addition and more importantly, Gleneld products
are designed with the customer in mind, with
considerations being made for ease of installation,
reliability, longevity and low maintenance.
Supply Chain Sourcing and outsourcing strategy
The decision to source selected materials and
outsource selected manufacturing and services is based
on an evaluation of AVKs own ability and capacity
own production costs versus market prices, and
vendors quality in services and deliveries. Some of the
main products and services provided by vendors are
raw materials such as steel and metal, castings, coating,
and a variety of components.
Selection of strategic suppliers
The selection of suppliers is based on strict
investigations, auditing and test of the ability to supply
materials and services in accordance with the set rules
and standard required by AVK. In principle, suppliers
and vendors must live up to the same rules and
standards that apply to any of AVKs own production
units.

Sales logistics
A high delivery capacity, a fast response time, and the
ability to adapt quickly, are some of the demands we
are constantly met with. In order to meet these
demands and at the same time ensure that we can
continue to oer our customers an optimum service,
the service we oer our customers is like all our
operations, under constant development. A close
dialogue with our customers worldwide, enables us to
customize our service in each single market.
Quality Management in the AVK Group
All AVK factories are continually subject to quality
improvement and certication as part of the AVKs
focused quality management eorts.
Every factory is currently certied according to ISO
14001, the international standard for environmental
management. Moreover, most AVK companies are also
certied according to OHSAS 18001, the international
occupational health and safety standard.
Furthermore, the majority of the AVK factories are
certied to ISO 9001 or its equivalent, and AVK are
aiming to have all factories certied within a specically
determined time frame. In our Quality control System,
certied to ISO 9001, every process aecting the quality
of the products or services complies with the
procedures documented in our Quality Manual, just as
our products are being inspected and/or tested to
existing standards before leaving any AVK factory. We
are very dedicated to making quality guidelines an
integrated part of our production ows and processes
so that quality is embedded in the way we design and
actually process our products. Quality is a rule of life in
the supply chain universe of the AVK Group
As a token of our proven quality, we have obtained
coveted approvals from a large number of national and
international testing institutes, and the AVK products
have won recognition from a large number of
customers around the world.

Notes on Valve Applications
Series 37/54 Gate Valves
Their function is to isolate or sectionalise
any piece of equipment or length of
pipeline in water or sewage systems.
It is normal practice, therefore, to use
them on section and delivery branches, of
pumps, at regular intervals along a
pipeline, at branches underneath air
valves, on bypasses, on drains or washouts
etc.
They have a low headloss coecient,
hence are ideal on pump installations to
maximise system eciency.

As a guideline rule they should be installed

at 500mtr intervals along the length of a
main.

Series 851 Air Valves

These play an important part in protecting
pipelines and providing maximum
eciency.

Series 41/641 Non-Return Valves

These are often referred to as Non-Return
Valves since in fullling this function they
prevent reverse ow.

Their duty is to fully and adequately

ventilate a pipeline or system.

In many installations, the system

deceleration gradient is severe and hence
valves must possess low reverse velocity
capability.

This involved exhalation and inhalation of

large volumes of air when lling or
emptying or on pump start up or cessation
sequences.

With air eliminated, the pipeline runs full,

hence maximum eciency is achieved.
Auxiliary ttings are available which give
surge alleviations (vented non-return
valve) and which can prevent air inow on
low pressure conditions (inow check
valve). Piped outlet connections are also
available.

Valves for this function are the large or

double orice types.

This means simply that valves must close

very quickly, before reverse velocity of the
uid column is established i.e. valves must
close at the instant the forward ow
ceases.

During pressurised conditions air also

accumulates and release is by means of
the small orice or double orice designs.

There are a number of means used to give

valves this rapid closing capability, such
as;-

Valves should be sited at all points along a

system where air/gas is likely to
accumulate.

Lever and weight

Springs
Dashpots and dampers

These points will include all peak points,

pressure break points, free surface
sections etc.

Whilst these can be eective, the simplest,

most reliable and most exible method is
to t the GLENFIELD RECOIL valves.

Glenfield.65902.c:Layout 1 08/06/2012 09:02 Page 11

11
Notes on Valve Applications
The onerous systems are those where
branch velocities are high, multi pump
delivery used, vertical lift is involved and
where surge vessels or similar are
employed

They are installed mainly in distribution

networks although they are also used to
control supply pressure to pump suctions,
particularly booster pumps, protection of
re hose outlets, older or low pressure
pipes etc.

Series 756 Buttery Valves

Their function is similar to gate valves and
would be used in similar situations except
that they would not be used in sewage
installations.

This valve type requires to be properly

sized in order to obtain the best
performance.

This valve is a Double Oset Resilient

Seated design providing drop-tight (zero
leakage) performance.
The valve is FULLY bi-directional as
standard and can be installed horizontally
or vertically in the pipeline.
The disc is designed to provide minimal
headloss characteristics and maximise
system eciency.
Pressure and Flow Control Valves

Sizing is based on ow rate and as a guide

the continuous maximum ow should give
a velocity of approximately 3 m/s based
on valve nominal bore.
Valves should be sized on this basis to
ensure that maximum valve lift is
employed.
Should ow and pressure dierential
conditions be such that valve lift is less
than 50%, then a specially ported valve
guide should be tted. This may also be
required if night time ows are small in
relation to day time and peak ows.

Series 853 Automatic Types

This is the range of valves covered by the
GLENFIELD Series 853 and has many
functions and duties.

If pressure dierential is high or near

cavitation conditions are envisaged then
the seat ring and valve guide should be
manufactured in a hardwearing material,
such as nickel alloy.

Pressure Reducing Valve

The principal function of this valve is to
provide an accurate constant outlet
pressure regardless of changes in inlet
pressure and uctuations in ow rate.

Pressure Sustaining Valves

The function of this variation is to ensure
that a constant inlet pressure is
maintained regardless of outlet pressure
changes and ow rate uctuations.

Glenfield.65902.c:Layout 1 08/06/2012 09:02 Page 12

12
Notes on Valve Applications
It is used to ensure that upstream users do
not suer depleted water pressure at peak
ow periods. It acts as a priority valve by
permitting ow only when excess head is
available, thus enabling for example,
storage tanks to be lled at night time.
On pump installations it is employed to
enable pumps to run up to duty point
quickly by providing the desired back
head. It also prevents overspeed and
pump run out by throttling down when
pressure drops etc.
Sizing and other details are generally as
for pressure reducing valves.
Constant Flow Valves
This valve will maintain a constant rate of
ow regardless of variations in upstream
or downstream pressures.
It can be useful where steady ows are
required for treatment or dozing
purposes.
Flow limitation is another of its duties
where it is necessary to control the
amount of water drawn by a particular
user.
Again, where a multiple number of outlets
are being supplied from a common source,
this valve can be used to ensure that no
particular outlet draws more than its
allotted share.

Sizing and details are as for the pressure

reducing valve.
Series 855/856/857 Non-Automatic Types
These are primarily in two categories
determined by their situation i.e. in-line or
terminal.
Their function is energy dissipation and
ow control. This duty can vary from
moderately to extremely severe, having to
overcome the potential problems of
vibration, cavitation, erosion, scouring and
at the same time provide ow regulation
over the major portion of valve stroke by
giving a near linear characteristic.
Series 855 In-Line Vertical Sleeve
This valve is sized on a basis of a maximum
nominal bore velocity of 3.5 m/s and with
standard design ported sleeve and liner,
has a K value of 8 at the fully open
position.
It is suitable for modulation duty and
hence is often used in conjunction with a
ow meter.

Notes on Valve Applications
Series 856 Submerged Discharge valves
This valve is used for energy dissipation and ow
control and is installed in a compact stilling sump.
The water discharges into a positive head of water and
by the time the water reaches a pre-calculated level,
the energy is dissipated.
Sizing is based on a maximum inlet velocity of 6 m/s.
The K value depends upon the valve design whether it
be equal inlet/outlet or tapered outlet design.
K Value (equal inlet/outlet) = 1.2 full open
K Value tapered outlet = 1.6 3.0 full open

Series 857 Free Discharge Valves

Free discharge regulation is encountered where it is
required to release water freely, often in large volumes
and under high pressure heads, to cope with ood or
compensation water from reservoirs and cater for
descouring and dewatering of pipeline systems.
K Value = 0.46 full open
Series 854 Ball Float Valves
The duty of this valve type is to control a Top Water
Level in a tank or reservoir within certain limits.
For this purpose the valve may be sited inside or
outside the tank.
