Introduction to Campus Recruitment Procedure
Every student chooses an educational institute on the basis of three important factors-
A. What would be the quality of education imparted?
B. How would the education benefit the student academically or otherwise?
C. he potential !obs that would be offered on the campus to the students who pass out of the
institute"
he last factor is apparently the most important criteria that would be evaluated by the students in
choosin# a particular academic institution"
he campus recruitment procedure has become one of the most popular avenues to recruit people into
companies"
Companies hire en#ineerin# #raduates into roles that ran#e from software application development$
delivery roles$ software% hardware testin#$ research and development$ application maintenance
networ& security and support etc" 'ana#ement #raduates are hired for roles in business development$
I consultin#$ business analysis$ customer relationship mana#ement$ HR roles$ sales$ mar&etin#$ finance
etc"
(efore a student braces himself to face the arduous tas& of appearin# for the campus selection
procedure$ there are a few points that he has to bear in mind )
1. Interact with senior students who have been hired into different or#ani*ations" a&in# a cue
from the seniors would effectively help a student to &now the areas that would require
e+tensive preparation and the ones that wouldn,t"
2. Interact with the faculty and understand how the technical interviews could be facilitated"
3. 'ap your stren#ths to the profile of the !ob" his is e+tremely important because there may be
scenarios in which a student may have more than one offer at hand" -nderstandin# the profile
of the !ob and the opportunities for #rowth within the or#ani*ation$ besides the CC offered
would benefit the students to narrow down their choices"
4. .tudy and understand the philosophy$ culture and values of the companies that recruit colle#e
#raduates"
Campus Recruitment Procedure:
'ost colle#es that offer campus recruitment facilitate the recruitment throu#h a special department
&nown as the placement department" he placement department is steered by a placement officer who
oversees the entire recruitment process"
he various sta#es that are involved in a typical campus recruitment pro#ram are as follows-
Pre-placement tal&
/ptitude tests
0roup discussion
echnical Interview
HR Interview"
1. Pre Placement Talk:
he pre-placement tal& is a presentation that is #iven by the recruitin# company,s HR and recruitin#
team" 1arious aspects of the company such as its profile$ history$ milestone achievements$
or#ani*ational #oals$ its vision$ mission$ the !ob profile$ products$ services$ product lines$ customers$
locations$ branches$ or#ani*ational chart$ senior mana#ement etc" he role of the !ob offered as well
as its description alon# with the selection criteria$ CC$ desi#nation etc" are also e+plained in detail"
0enerally the pre-placement tal& is presented by a senior member of the delivery or the HR team"
he #eneral format of the selection process remains the same across companies that hire campus
#raduates" 'inor variation may be present" .election happens in the followin# sta#es"
2o#on to www.CampusRecruitment.co.in and as& doubt usin# provided 3uestion Id" 1 of 355
2. Aptitude Test:
/ptitude test is conducted to evaluate how effectively a student could respond to a tas& or a situation
and their communication s&ills" In short$ this area tests a candidate,s problem solvin# ability" he
areas that are normally tested are numerical or quantitative ability$ lo#ical reasonin#$ verbal ability
and data sufficiency"
a. Quantitatie Aptitude:
4umerical ability entails multiple choice questions that are from the topics mostly covered in hi#h
school alon# with some advanced topics" he various topics from which questions may be as&ed are
4umber theory$ /vera#es$ Ratio and proportion$ ime and 5istance$ Percenta#es$ mi+tures and
alle#ation$ permutations$ combinations$ probability etc"
he purpose of this test is to assess the problem solvin# ability of a candidate under constraints in
time" his area can be effectively countered if a student prepares sufficiently beforehand"
!. "er!al A!ilit#:
his area tests the communication s&ills$ readin# ability and also the #rammatical &nowled#e of a
candidate" he type of questions that may be as&ed in verbal ability include #rammar based questions
6sentence correction% error identification7$ vocabulary based questions 6para !umbles$ synonyms$
antonyms$ fill in the blan&s$ clo*e passa#es7$ idioms and phrases$ readin# comprehension and
occasionally descriptive writin# 6essays$ formal%informal letters$ analytical% issue writin# section7" It
is mandatory for a candidate to have basic rules of En#lish in place before he or she appears for the
campus placement process"
c. Anal#tical and $o%ical Reasonin%:
his section tests the lo#ical reasonin# and the analytical ability of a candidate" he questions are
#enerally #iven in the form of pu**les and a set of questions follow the pu**le" It is required by a
candidate to rationally approach the pu**le by interpretin# the lo#ic" 1erbal based reasonin#
questions such as cause and effect$ assertion and reasons may also be as&ed"
d. &ata 'nterpretation and &ata (ufficienc#:
5ata is presented in various forms such as bar #raphs$ pie charts and data should be interpreted
accordin#ly" In data sufficiency$ a problem is presented with some data and a candidate has to
determine if the #iven amount of data is sufficient for problem solvin#"
he aptitude round cannot be underestimated because it is a process of eliminatin# candidates who
do not have enou#h problem solvin# abilities$ reasonin# s&ills or acceptable levels of communication"
While a few companies may lay more emphasis on communication and numerical abilities$ a few
others may stress upon analytical abilities" Re#ardless of how well a candidate fares academically$ he
or she should prepare sufficiently for the aptitude test as this sta#e in an inevitable phase of any
campus selection process"
3. )roup &iscussion:
hose selected in the aptitude test will be called for #roup discussion" 0roup discussion is a process of
selection rather than a process of elimination" he recruitin# team will evaluate certain personality
traits li&e confidence$ communicatin# with the team$ participation$ ability to present one,s views in a
clear and concise manner$ interpersonal s&ills$ leadership s&ills etc" hese are the traits that the
employers would want to see in their potential employees" he main intention of #roup discussion is
to assess the behavior of a candidate in a #roup" In the 05 round$ there are usually a minimum of 8
and a ma+imum of 9: candidates" he topic of the discussion is normally related current topics$
hypothetical situations$ problematic situations$ abstract topics etc" .tudents who are confident$ have
a clear thou#ht process and are able to articulate their thou#hts lead the #roup discussion" Hence$
students need to be positive$ confident and dynamic in their attitude in this round" hey should also
develop effective listenin# s&ills that would enable them to listen and understand others perspective"
.tudents are advised to &eep abreast of current affairs and are e+pected to familiari*e themselves
with the popular topics in news" hey are advised to form small #roups and discuss various topics
which would bolster their efforts to successively participate in the #roup discussions"
2o#on to www.CampusRecruitment.co.in and as& doubt usin# provided 3uestion Id" 2 of 355
4. Tec*nical 'nterie+:
he pre final round of the selection process is the technical interview" / student appearin# for the
technical round should be thorou#h with the fundamental aspects of his sub!ect" While a student may
not be e+pected to &now the entire sub!ect inside out$ he or she is e+pected to be proficient in the
basic aspects of the sub!ect and able to present the sub!ect in a well formatted manner to his
interviewers" It would #reatly benefit the students if they would have completed their pro!ects on
their own rather than pla#iari*in# 6copyin#7 from other sources" his would e+hibit the in#enuity of
a student and increase his chances of clearin# the technical round" .tudents who have interned in
#ood or#ani*ations have an ed#e above the others in the technical round as company internships are
#reatly valued by the recruiters"
5. ,R 'nterie+:
he HR interview is more of a two way process" / student is assessed for his communication$ attitude$
confidence$ fle+ibility$ enthusiasm$ behavioral s&ills etc" he company HR will mar&et their company
throu#h the HR round" / student should be confident$ but not over confident in the HR round" He or
she should be honest and polite in answerin# the questions and also as& questions to the company HR
re#ardin# basic policies$ procedures and of course$ the CC" 'any a time it is quite common for
technically stron# candidates to fail to #et throu#h the HR round" his may happen if the candidate
has poor presentation s&ills$ is overconfident or is rude or e+tremely timid in his or her attitude"
.elf-#roomin# is very important for a candidate to clear this round of the campus selection"
he recruitment process wei#hs heavily on the attitude of a candidate" / candidate should e+hibit
positive thin&in#$ learnability$ proper body lan#ua#e$ confidence$ clarity of thou#ht$ interpersonal
s&ills$ future #oals etc" his se#ment has about ;8< wei#hta#e"
/cademic &nowled#e has a wei#hta#e of about 9:<" his test the student,s fundamental &nowled#e of
the core sub!ects in his or her branch and also its practical use"
Communication s&ills carry a wei#hta#e of about 9:<"
Preparin# a #ood resume is equally important while bracin# for the campus selection process" he
resume is the first impression a recruiter has of the candidate" he resume should be prepared in
such a way that it reflects a candidate,s capabilities$ his stren#ths$ achievements and areas of
interests" Hence sufficient efforts should #o into preparin# a #ood resume" =or further readin#$ refer
to >Resume, section of this boo&"
?nowled#e about current affairs and e+tra-curricular activities carry about 8< wei#hta#e" hese
areas should also be concentrated upon to increase the chances of ma&in# it throu#h the campus
interviews"
hus$ a thorou#h and systematic preparation in each of the areas mentioned above would #o a lon#
way in ensurin# that a candidate #ets throu#h the ri#ht company"
