Narrator:

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a
town in Galilee,

to a virgin pledged to be married to a man
named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgins name was
Mary.

The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are
highly favored! The Lord is with you."

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind
of greeting this might be.

But the angel said to her, "Do not be
afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.

You will be with
child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name
Jesus.

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most
High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David
and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom
will never end."
Scene opens with Mary sitting in her room full of many emotions
(excitement, confusion, shame, uncertainty).

MARY
Do not be afraid? Its a little too late for that. How could this be?
Me, Mary is carrying the Son of God? Who am I that I would
choose to do such a great thing? This must be a mistake. God
are you sure? Hello, hello..
Music begins. Mary begins to sing, I believe.

Narrator:
By this time, the word had gotten out about this miraculous
conception. Although Mary was full of faith after the encounter
with the angel, fear and doubt begin to overtake her again once
she left the house to head into town. The people begin to mock
her and cause her to doubt the words she had just received.

As she continues to walk, people are giving her weird looks;
some are being sarcastic about her being pregnant by the Holy
Spirit. She keeps walking and begins to cry. As she sees more
people up the road she detours off into a little side road to avoid
the oncoming crowd of naysayers.
She begins to settle in but fails to see an old lady in tattered
clothes sitting there on the ground.

MARY
Ahhhh (a sigh of relief). Why are people so mean? How could
this be happening to me? The angel assured me I would be ok.
Yeah right! I cant even go into town without people laughing and
poking fun at me. God, how could you let this happen? You gave
me a promise, now Im beginning to doubt all of this.
OLD WOMAN
Nothing is impossible with God, honey
MARY
(A startled Mary) Who are you?

OLD WOMAN
Who am I doesnt matter. Im trying to figure out did you forget
who YOU are. You JUST said God gave you a promise. He even
sent an angel down to earth to tell you. Now thats express mail
for ya!
MARY
I know.. but people are so mean. The word got out and now
there ready to throw me to the wolves. I know I have a promise
(very sarcastic) and Ive found favor with the Lord BUT peo (old
lady cuts off people)
OLD LADY
Go ahead and say it! PEOPLE. Ha! Are you going to let PEOPLE
talk you out of what God told you? Listen, people will be people.
Not everyone is rooting for you. Not everyone is cheering you on.
Sometimes, its your own family BUT if God said it, you better
stand firm, square your shoulders and step out on His word.
Come on (she walks over to Mary and gestures her). Stand
firm, square your shoulders and step out on His word. (the old
woman ends up behind Mary helping her straighten up
shoulders).
MARY
(with much onfidence) I can do this. If he spoke it, will He not
complete it? Come on Mary, get it together girl. You gotta deliver
this child for a purpose bigger than you. Hes the savior of the
world. Than..k (she attempts to turn around and say thank you
to the old woman but she finds herself standing all alone).
Mary reprises I believe. The old woman sings from off stage
with choir.

Scene Change
Narrator:
While Mary was still engaged to Joseph, she miraculously
became pregnant through the Holy Spirit, as foretold to her by
the angel. When Mary told Joseph she was pregnant, he had
every right to feel disgraced. He knew the child was not his own,
and Mary's apparent unfaithfulness carried a grave social
stigma. Joseph not only had the right to divorce Mary, under
Jewish law she could be put to death by stoning.

Joseph is pacing the floor with apparent worry and frustration.
While hes pacing, he get a knock on the door.


JOSEPH

Who is it?

JAMES

Its James, open up.

JOSEPH
(opens door and rushes James in) I already know why youre
here. You mustve heard the news. Its all over town.

JAMES

I actually came to borrow some sugar BUT since you brought it
up (gestures Joseph to have a seat) Lets talk about it.



JOESPH

Now you know as well as I do that, that child is not mine. I
havent touched Mary. I havent looked upon her that way.

JAMES
Well, from the looks of it, weve got some figuring out to do (he
lets out a big laugh)

JOSEPH

Man, this isnt the time to be laughing. I dont know what to do.
(sulks down into the chair). Were bound to be ran out of town,
and thats only a fraction of the humility were going to face.

JAMES

HUMILITY!! My brother Youve got bigger issues than that
your woman can be stoned to death. So you need to figure this
out quick. You know I got your back and will support you in
whatever you decide to do.

JOSEPH

I appreciate that. I just need some answers and I need them fast.

JAMES

Well, Ill give you some space so you can clear your head.
(James see himself out but before he closes the door, he peaks
back in). Joseph!!!!




JOSEPH

(With a concerned look on his face)
JAMES

(In his best talk show host voice). In the case of Joseph and
Mary You are NOT the father..

JOSEPH

(Joseph runs to the door and slams it shut) Get out of here!!

Music starts to what shall I do. During the closing bars of the
song, Joseph retires to the couch and begins to fall asleep.

ANGEL

Joseph!.... Joseph

JOSEPH

(awakens startled).. Huh, who, what?...

ANGEL

I know youre a good man, and youre worried about the outcome
of all of this. Let me assure you today that Mary is telling the
truth. God sent an angel, just like me to visit her and bring her
good news.

She indeed is pregnant with the son of God. The Holy Spirit
came upon her and she in carrying the savior of the world. His
name?... Jesus!

So, Go to Mary, love her, show compassion to her, make her
your wife. God doesnt make mistakes, Joseph. He chose you for
this very situation, at this very time for this very reason. Go in
peace and stress no more! (The angel disappears)

JOSEPH

Ive got to do the right thing. Let people talk. One word from God
changes everything!! Here I come Mary!!



Scene Change

Narrator:
At that time, Caesar Augustus decreed that a census be taken,
and every person in the entire Roman world had to go to his own
town to register. Joseph, being of the line of David, was required
to go to Bethlehem to register with Mary. By this time, Mary was
well with child and soon to deliver. They began their journey to
Bethlehem only to find no place for the baby to be born.

The choir begins Away in manger (they are seated down stage
right by the band)


Joseph met up with Mary and they begin their jounery (From the
foyer to center stage) As they are walking the screens are
flashing NO ROOM IN THE INN! NO VANANCY!!

Narrator:
Out in the fields, an angel of the Lord appeared to the shephersd
who were tending their flock of sheep by night. The angel
announced.

ANGEL
Here ye! Here ye! The Savior has been born in the town of
David. He is here. What a wonderful gift to the world. God has
sent us a special gift. Go see the baby boy! Go see!

(Suddenly a great host of heavenly beings (the dancers)
appeared with the angels and began singing praises to God)

Special Gift (True Worship Dance)
As the angelic beings (dancers) departed, the shepherds
decided to travel to Bethlehem and see the Christ-child. They
gathered their belongings and begin to move quickly. By this
time star begin to shine in the East. The wise men knew that that
was the sign of the birth to the king of the Jews.

The wise men are placed up in the balcony (they will come down
the stairs with gifts and make their way to center stage to the
stable).






JOSEPH

Look at him! Look at him! Hes here.


MARY

Oh Joseph, God saw fit to trust us with this treasure. He chose
us! People talked about us, spread rumors and even turned their
backs on us. That didnt stop us. We didnt abort the promise.

JOSEPH

Thats right, Mary! Wow! He chose us. Who wouldve imagined
we would have a King for a son?!? Ha! (they both smile at each
other)
