COURSE: American Sign Language 100

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to teach basic American Sign Language. Areas of study
will include: Vocabulary Development, Grammatical Features, Cultural
Awareness, and Conversational Fluency. These components will enable the
students to develop visual language skills. Discussion topics include historical
information such as sign origin, variations, production, and use of non-manual
features. Students will compare and contrast Deaf and Hearing cultural
perspectives as well as master basic linguistic structures in English and American
Sign Language. Classroom discussions will present opportunities to:
1.) Increase visual language fluency
2.) Analyze current level of function
3.) Identify occurrences of dual language functions: i.e. code switching,
pidginization and monolinguistic communication formats.

III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:

A. Participate in all classroom activities using signs, gestures & print to
communicate.

B. Hand-in all class work and homework on time.

C. Report for additional tutorial if necessary during Seminar time if you feel
additional help is needed, or if required by your teacher. (Lunchtime
appointments are also possible with advance notice.)

V. EVALUATION/GRADING PROCEDURE

Grades will be based on class work, homework, quizzes, tests, classroom
activities, field trip, group discussions, and thematic projects.
Anyone caught cheating will be given an F on that assignment.

VI. Expected Projects:

1. Sign a childrens book / Poem
2. Sign a song of your choice
3. Present an academic topic from core classes
4. Present a Newscast (group)
5. Create Powerpoint on Deaf culture / person
6. Share deaf-related articles or current events in sign language

Grade Weights:

Homework and Participation: 10%
Tests, Quizzes, and Projects: 90%

90% - 100% = A

80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
0% - 59% = F

8.0 Given targeted conversations that regulate behavior, the student will
demonstrate receptive and expressive mastery conversations in American Sign
Language, (ASL)

9.0 Given the opportunity, the student will demonstrate the ability to initiate,
conduct and terminate short context specific conversations in American Sign
Language, (ASL)

10.0 Given the opportunity, the student will attend at least two social functions of
the Deaf Community.
