Position Purpose: The Surgical Interest Network (SurgIN) Chairperson is the leading figure of SurgIN, and is responsible for the pursuit of the Committees goals and vision. In the near future, this person will manage a SurgIN Committee, and have much more greatly defined roles. Currently, as SurgIN, is such a young organisation that is constantly growing, it is difficult to put specific roles and responsibilities in here for the Chairperson. Reporting Relationships: Direct Report(s): The Chairperson will report their activities to the surgical society Presidents, who are the active members of SurgiN, and will require the approval of the majority of the members in undertaking significant activities that impacts SurgIN as an organisation. Key Contacts: External: The Chairperson will be involved in meeting relevant external stakeholders, such as the Royal College of Surgeons (particularly the Academic Section), sponsors, health organisations, and the like. Internal: The Chairperson will have close contact with every President. Further, as SurgIN is a Committee of the Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA), the Chairperson retains close contact with a single member of AMSA.

The Surgical Interest Network Key Accountability 1 Give direction and provides leadership to the achievement of SurgINs goals and objectives Key activities: - Ensure all of SurgINs activities correspond with the agreed philosophy, mission and strategy set - Coordinate strategic planning meetings with selected members - Promote the goals and vision/mission of SurgIN widely Key outcomes: - Organise strategic planning meetings - Openly discuss strategy and goals of the organisation with the members - Openly outline Goals and mission/vision of SurgIN to members
Key Accountability 2 Ensures that the surgical societies are connected with each other Key activities: - The Chairperson is the Chair of all Committee meetings - The Chairperson must arrange regular meetings with Committee members to ensure that the surgical societies retain strong contact with each other, with a free- flow exchange of information and resources - The Chairperson must work with the surgical societies as a group, and individually, to advance each objectives. Key outcomes: - Arranging at least 4 SurgIN meetings per year - Instigation of individual Committee member meetings for initial consultation and where needed from then
Key Accountability 3 Foster relationships with key stakeholders Key activities: - There are a number of key stakeholders that SurgIN must maintain a close working partnership with: - Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) especially the Academic Section - Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) - New Zealand Medical Students Association (NZMSA) Key outcomes: - Ensure semi-regular contact with RACS nominated contact person - Ensure constant contact with AMSA nominated contact person - Ensure engagement with AMSA Council meetings - Ensure contact with NZMSA
The Surgical Interest Network Key Accountability 4 Create a vision and plan for SurgIN with key stakeholders Key activities: - Read and be familiar with the Associations Incorporated Regulation 1999, the Associations Incorporation Act 1981, the Corporations Act 2001 (Pages 127-366 are the only relevant), along with other relevant legislation - Read and be inherently familiar with SurgINs Rules & Regulations and Constitution - Engage with key stakeholders, past Chairpersons, and the SurgIN Committee in forming a direction and plan for the organisation going forward Key outcomes: - Read the stated documents - Production of a strong vision in the first 3 months of the year.
