Hello!
What a busy August we
had! Everyone is back in
school, and we had our
first social of the year. It
was so good to see so
many new and returning
faces at the social. I do
hope that everyone was
able to mingle and talk to
the vendors and meet
some new friends.

Our thought process with
the social was to bring
some of the hidden gems
from the community to
you. The Shreveport/
Bossier area has so many
wonderful festivals,
events, restaurants, and
shops. It can be hard when
you are new to seek out
what the area has to offer,
or in my case, you have
been here for a while and
you just did not know they
existed. We hope that we
made that a little easier for
you.

We had an overwhelming
response from our off base
community. I was over-
whelmed with the amount
of vendors wanting to par-
ticipate. They were so ex-
tremely generous to us.
They gave away tickets to
events, t-shirts, informa-
tional materials, discounts,
books and goodie bags.

I feel extremely blessed to
work with the ladies on
this year's board. Every-
one played their role in
making the social success-
ful. From every email
sent, every flier that was
posted, every phone call
and all those board mem-
bers who gave 110% at the
social....it was a team ef-
fort to make the social
happen. A HUGE
THANK YOU to each
and every board member.

Our next social is right
around the corner! And
we have lot's of fun so-
cials planned in the com-
ing months. In October,
we have our annual bas-
ket auction, which is al-
ways so much fun. No-
vember, bunco...a fun
time for all! And in De-
cember, we have a fash-
ion show planned. Watch
for more details about
these upcoming socials in
the near future.

So excited to see you all
at the next social!

Ways & Means is undergoing a rejuvenation process for the year. We have some new goals
and new products that we are selling this year. I hope you enjoy the new boutique style for
Ways & Means and it will be an awesome year for shopping!! Every dollar we make goes
right back to our Membership for programming and fun things. Please support us as it is
much appreciated. Thank you to everyone who was able to purchase items at the table in
August.
Please check out the Ways & Means table for September. We are going to be selling some
awesome wine accessories (unfortunately not wine itself) that are items that you can add to
your home for your next wine party.

Ingredients
For the Crust:
1 lb. salted butter room temp
1 cup sugar
1 cups powdered sugar
2 Tbs vanilla
4 cups All Purpose flour
For the Filling:
1 bag (14 oz.) caramel candies
(about 50 individual caramels), un-
wrapped
cup milk or cream
teaspoon vanilla
*1/2 Tbs. coarse sea salt (optional)
Salted Caramel Butter Bars
How to Make
To make the crust:
1. Preheat oven to 325
2. In a large bowl, combine the butter and sugars. Using mixer on medium speed,
beat together until creamy. Add the vanilla and beat until combined. Sift the flour
into the butter mixture and beat on low speed until a smooth soft dough forms.
3. Spray a 9x13 inch baking pan lightly with non-stick cooking spray. Press
one-third of the dough evenly into the pan to form a bottom crust. Wrap remaining
dough in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator.
4. Bake crust until firm and the edges are a pale golden brown approx 20 minutes.
Transfer pan to a wire rack and let cool about 15 minutes.
5. While the bottom crust is baking and the remaining dough is chilling, make the
caramel filling. Place the unwrapped caramels in a microwave-safe bowl. Add the
cream. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Remove from the microwave and stir until
smooth. If caramels are not completely melted, microwave on high for 30-second
intervals, stirring after each interval, until smooth.
6. Once the caramel is melted add in your 1/2 tsp vanilla and stir until combined.
7. Pour the caramel filling over the crust. If you are going to salt the caramel
sprinkle it on caramel layer now.
8. Remove the remaining chilled dough from the refrigerator and crumble it evenly
over the caramel.
9. Return the pan to the oven and bake until the filling is bubbly and the crumbled
shortbread topping is firm and lightly golden, about 25 - 30 minutes.
10. Let cool before cutting into squares.
