MOUNTAIN

A mountain is a large landform that stretches above the surrounding land in a limited area, usually
in the form of a peak. A mountain is generally steeper than a hill. Mountains are
formedthrough tectonic forces or volcanism.

Mount Everest, also known in Nepal
as Sagarmth and in Tibet as
Chomolungma, is the Earth's highest
mountain. It is located in the
Mahalangur section of the Himalayas.
MOUNTAIN RANGES

A mountain range or mountain belt is a geographic area containing numerous geologically
related mountains. A mountain system or system of mountain ranges, sometimes is used to
combine several geological features that are geographically related.

The Himalayas, or Himalaya, is a
mountain range in South Asia
separating the plains of the Indian
subcontinent from the Tibetan
Plateau. The Himalayan range is
home to the planet's highest peaks,
including the highest, Mount Everest.
VALLEY

A valley is a low area between hills, often with a river running through it. In geology, a valley or
dale is a depression that is longer than it is wide.

The South Tibet Valley is formed
by the Yarlung Zangbo
River during its middle reaches,
where it travels from west to
east. The valley is approximately
1200 kilometres long and 300
kilometres wide. The valley
descends from 4500 metres
above sea level to 2800 metres.
The mountains on either side of
the valley are usually around
5000 metres high.
PLATEAU

In geology and earth science, a plateau, also called a high plain or tableland, is an area of
highland, usually consisting of relatively flat terrain.

The Colorado Plateau,
also known as the
Colorado Plateau
Province, is a
physiographic region of
the Intermontane
Plateaus, roughly
centered on the Four
Corners region of the
southwestern United
States.
ARCHIPELAGO

An archipelago, sometimes called an island group or island chain, is a cluster of islands.

The Philippines, officially known as
the Republic of the Philippines , is
a sovereign island country in
Southeast Asia situated in the
western Pacific Ocean. It consists of
7,107 islands that are categorized
broadly under three main
geographical
divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and
Mindanao.
OCEAN

An ocean is a body of saline water that composes much of a planet's hydrosphere. On Earth, an
ocean is one of the major conventional divisions of the World Ocean, which occupies two-thirds
of planet's surface.

The Pacific Ocean is the
largest of the Earth's oceanic
divisions. It extends from the
Arctic Ocean in the north to
the Southern Ocean in the
south and is bounded by
Asia and Australia in the
west and the Americas in the
east.
SEA

The sea, the world ocean, or simply the ocean, is the connected body of salty water that covers 70.8% of
the Earth's surface. The sea moderates the Earth's climate and has important roles in the water cycle,
carbon cycle, and nitrogen cycle.

The Mediterranean Sea is a sea
connected to the Atlantic Ocean
surrounded by the
Mediterranean region and
almost completely enclosed by
land: on the north by Southern
Europe and Anatolia, on the
south by North Africa, and on
the east by the Levant.
GULF

A gulf is a large bay that is an arm of an ocean or sea or a part of an ocean or sea extending into
the land

The Persian Gulf is located
in Western Asia between Iran to the
northeast and the Arabian
Peninsula to the southwest. The
Persian Gulf is an extension of
the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Oman)
through the Strait of
Hormuz. The Shatt al-Arab river
delta forms the northwest shoreline.
STRAIT

A strait is a naturally formed, narrow, typically navigable waterway that connects two larger bodies
of water. It most commonly refers to a channel of water that lies between two land masses, but it
may also refer to a navigable channel through a body of water that is otherwise not navigable, for
example because it is too shallow, or because it contains an unnavigable reef or archipelago.

The Mozambique Channel is
an arm of the Indian Ocean located
between Madagascar and Mozambi
que. The channel is about 1,600 km
(1,000 mi) long and 419 km (260 mi)
across at its narrowest point, and
reaches a depth of 3,292 m
(10,800 ft) about 230 km (143 mi)
off the coast of Mozambique.
BAY

A bay is a large body of water connected to an ocean or sea, formed by an inlet of water due to the
surrounding land blocking some waves and often reducing winds. Bays also exist in in-land
environments as an inlet to any larger body of water, such as a lake or pond, or the estuary of a
river.

The Bay of Bengal, the largest bay
in the world, forms the northeastern
part of the Indian Ocean. Roughly
triangular in shape, it is bordered
mostly by India and Sri Lanka to the
west, Bangladesh to the north,
and Burma (Myanmar) and
the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to
the east.
