Lesson 1 Lesson 2 Lesson 3
A lot of real life problems
involving two quantities that is expressed
in the form of equations are function.
Graph helps to clearly understand and
visualize the relation. Moreover, todays
generation has an easy access to
technologies that provides graphing
conveniences needed to draw these
graphs and also enrich humans
capabilities of graphing.

In this module, you will be able
to acquire knowledge and understanding
on functions and graphs that begins with
the study of algebraic concepts related to
practical situations like rate related
problems.

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson you should be able to:
define rectangular coordinate system.
determine the location of the point in the
plane.
plot points on a cartesian plane.

Lesson 1
Rectangular Coordinate System
Have you seen a world map?
Did you see where the Philippines
is located in the map? Notice the
significance of having the
imaginary lines drawn in the map
to easily locate a place. It is like
a point on a plane.

The idea of
describing a point and a
plane was introduced by
Rene Descartes, the
system is called
rectangular coordinate
system or also known as
Cartesian coordinate
system named after its
originator.

Lesson 1
Rectangular Coordinate System
Activity 1: Terminal
Rectangular Coordinate System
Description: This game will allow you to recall your knowledge in the arithmetic operations
and plotting of points in a real number line.
Directions: The plane has to make an emergency landing due to technical error. Help the
captain find which terminal will be the best to land. The availability of the terminal is based on
the computation of the arithmetic operation. Find the right value on the real number line.
TERMINALS
1. 6 2 = ____________
2. 3 + 4 = ___________
3. 2 + 3 = _____________
4. 11 11 = __________
5. 1 + 3 = _____________
Description: This activity
will teaches you on what is the
definition of rectangular
coordinate system, its parts and
uses. Also, this will show
examples on plotting of points on
the Cartesian plane.

Activity 2: Watch It!
Description:
This activity will test your
knowledge on point-plotting.
(Interactive)

Directions: Draw a
Cartesian plane on a
graphing paper. Then, plot the
given points below.

1. (-2, 1) 5. (0, 4)
2. 2. (2, 0) 6. (-2, -1)
3. 3. (5, -1) 7. (8, 2)
4. (3, -3) 9. (-2, 5)
5. (0, 4)
Activity 3: Point Out
Rectangular Coordinate System
Description: In this activity
you will be able to enhance your
skill in locating a point on a plane
and determining the quadrant
where the point is located.
Directions: Copy the table on
the left in a 1 whole sheet of paper.
Complete the table by referring to
the figure below.
Activity 4: Where Am I?

Lesson 2
Representation of Relations and Functions
While going through with the module, you
will be able to understand the difference
between mere relation and function. Varied
activities were provided for you to deeply
understand the lesson.

Directions: Study the dates and events below. On a sheet of paper write
the date on the first column (x) with its corresponding event on column y. If
your done click on the button found on the right side of the slide, to reveal
the correct match.

Directions: Study the dates and events below. On a sheet of paper write
the date on the first column (x) with its corresponding event on column y. If
your done click on the button found on the right side of the slide, to reveal
the correct match.

Directions: Read and understand fully the
discussion about function for you to be able to answer
the guide questions.
Have you realized that you came up with a
relation by simply following the instruction in activity 6? In
mathematics, a relation is said to be a correspondence
between two or more quantities. A special type of this is
called function.
Study the difference among the four
correspondences. You will be able to derive the definition
of function by answering some guide questions after.

Directions:
On a sheet of paper, identify
whether the given rules show
function or not by writing YES if
function and NO if not.
Activity 9: Learn It
Rectangular Coordinate System
Directions: Read
and understand fully the
information provided.

Directions:
Find the value of the function
