ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We think if any of us honestly reflects on who we are, how we got here, what we think we might
do well, and so forth, we discover a debt to others that spans written history. The work of some
unknown person makes our lives easier everyday. We believe it's appropriate to acknowledge all
of these unknown persons; but it is also necessary to acknowledge those people we know have
directly shaped our lives and our work.
First of all we would like to thank my guide Mr. , Faculty of Management
!epartment, "#$ #%M"W%#&&' M(M&#$%) *#&+' &F '#&F(""$&,%) -&))(*(",
)ucknow for his guidance throughout the semester.
Finally, $ would like to thank My *od, My 'arents and my friends for all the support and
blessings that was re.uired for completion of this pro/ect.

ABSTRACT
$ndian "tock Markets is one of the oldest in %sia. $ts history dates back to nearly 644 years ago.
The earliest records of security dealings in $ndia are meager and obscure. T%& E'() I*+,'
C-./'*0 was the dominant institution in those days and business in its loan securities used to
be transacted towards the close of the eighteenth century. 0y 3784's business on corporate stocks
and shares in 0ank and -otton presses took place in 0ombay. Though the trading list was
broader in 3789, there were only half a do:en brokers recogni:ed by banks and merchants during
37;4 and 37<4. The 37<4's witnessed a rapid development of commercial enterprise and
brokerage business attracted many men into the field and by 37=4 the number of brokers
increased into =4. $n 37=4>=3 the %merican -ivil War broke out and cotton supply from +nited
"tates to (urope was stopped; thus, the 1S%'2& M'*,'1 in $ndia began. The number of brokers
increased to about 644 to 6<4. %t the end of the %merican -ivil War, the brokers who thrived out
of -ivil War in 37?;, found a place in a street @now appropriately called as !alal "treetA where
they would conveniently assemble and transact business. $n 377?, they formally established in
0ombay, the 3N'),4& S%'2& '*+ S)-56 B2-6&2(1 A((-5,'),-*, which is alternatively known as
T%& S)-56 E75%'*8&3. $n 379<, the "tock (1change ac.uired a premise in the same street and
it was inaugurated in 3799. Thus, the "tock (1change at 0ombay was consolidated. The $ndian
stock market has been assigned an important place in financing the $ndian corporate sector. The
principal functions of the stock markets areB
