INTRODUCTION

Industrial automation underlies productivity boost in economy. Its develop-
ment involves the design and make up of automated systems for control of vari-
ous manufacturing processes and machines. Contemporary industrial automation
integrates the achievements in the areas of information, management and com-
munication technologies.
The book "Industrial Networks and Interfaces in Automation Systems" is
intended to provide basic knowledge for operators, who work in small and me-
dium size companies, about utilization of standard interfaces and set up of in-
dustrial networks in automation systems. In writing the book the authors have
followed the contemporary level of achievements in that particular field and
have tried to reduce the number of theoretical formulations and mathematical
descriptions to a reasonable minimum. The content of the book is distributed in
ten chapters.
Chapter one, entitled "Introduction into Industrial Communication Net-
works" dwells upon basic features of contemporary manufacturing and commu-
nication systems, automation and control systems with network communication
and their functional distribution. Chapter two makes an overview of the types of
communication networks. The next chapter contains a general background of
network models and topologies; special consideration being given to devices for
physical and logic setup of networks plus network models OSI and DoD. Chap-
ter four contains the special properties and characteristics of industrial field net-
works as representatives of the lowest level in the hierarchy of industrial sys-
tems for control. The next two chapters review the special properties of the field
nets specifications Profibus and CAN. Chapter seven includes a bulk of general
knowledge about industrial networks at control level and the specific features
of ControlNet specification. Further the book reviews industrial networks at in-
formation level, the Ethernet network specification and the application of wire-
less communications in industrial automation systems. The book ends up with
control questions related to the individual chapters for the purpose of progress
checking of trainees.

Chapters 1, 3, 4, 7 and 8 are authored by Assoc. Prof. Aldeniz Rashidov,
Ph.D and chapters 2, 5, 6, 9 and 10 are written by Assoc. Prof. Stanimir
Yordanov, Ph.D.
The book is intended for use as a reference teaching material in training pro-
grams for professional qualification upgrading and retraining of personnel in
small and medium size companies. A major prerequisite for acquisition of the
material taught is that trainees should have basic knowledge in mathematics and
physics. Similarly the book can be of use to university students and specialists
involved in training related to the application of communication networks in in-
dustrial systems for control.
