Contenuti deI corso
Parte Pratica: The practical part of the course follows a structured and topic based (notions and functions) syllabus
at the required level (C1), with space dedicated to discussion activities based on themes from written texts, dealing
with their comprehension and elaboration, with particular attention focused on the relevant lexical development of
the topics covered.
Parte Teorica: The theoretical part of the course focuses on the connections between language and culture,
concentrating on the themes and concepts listed below. The chronological order in which they are presented
corresponds with the chapters in Kramsch's book (see 'Testi di riferimento'). Towards the end of the course,
students are encouraged to apply these concepts to the analysis of English-language newspaper articles using
Reah's book (see 'Testi di riferimento').
Lesson 1: ntroduction Discourse communities. nsiders/outsiders and representing their differences. Linguistic
relativity and the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis.
Lesson 2: Cultural Semantic Meaning, Part The arbitrary nature of linguistic signs. Denotative, connotative and
iconic meanings. Semantic cohesion, co-text and prior text.
Lesson 3: Cultural Semantic Meaning, Part Metaphor. The non-arbitrary nature of linguistic signs. Naturalisation,
conventionalisation and stereotypes.
Lesson 4: Cultural Pragmatic Meaning Context of situation and context of culture. Structures of expectation.
Contextualisation clues and situated references. Pragmatic coherence. Grice's Cooperative Principle. Participants'
roles and the construction of culture.
Lesson 5: Spoken Language, Oral Culture, Part Comparison of speech and writing. ndicating status and social
deixis. Footing and code switching.
Lesson 6: Spoken Language, Oral Culture, Part Protecting face. Conversational style, Narrative style.

Lesson 8: Language and Cultural dentity, Part Cultural identity. Cultural stereotypes. Language crossing as act of

Lesson 9: Language and Cultural dentity, Part Linguistic nationism. Standard language and cultural totem.
Linguistic rights, linguicism and linguistic imperialism.
Lesson 10: Current ssues Who is a native speaker? Cultural authenticity, appropriateness and appropriation.
Cross-cultural, intercultural and multicultural societies. Politics of recognition.
