CONFESSION
OF SINS
A
lmighty and Most Merciful Father,
we come before You, acknowledging
our sins, our shortcomings, and our
breaking of our Covenant with You.
Not only have we done things we ought not to
have done, said things we ought not to have said,
left undone so many things we ought to have done
and been silent when we should have witnessed for
You.
Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we
have also closed our eyes and pretended not to
see the injustices, the racism and the evil which
pervade our everyday lives.
We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear
the cries for liberation which come from the lips,
lives and hearts of the oppressed — even our own
Black brothers and sisters!
Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and
faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great
sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come
to You in love and worship giving Your name the
praise forevermore.

LENTEN HOPE
PERILS AND PROMISES
“A MISSION OF HOPE”

S
piritual life is deeply personal. It deals with our inner being, with what motivates us. Yet,
when we look at what Jesus taught His hearers, we find Him speaking repeatedly about our
relationships with those around us. Even the Beatitudes, while speaking of being humble,
meek and seekers of righteousness, include a call to be merciful to others and makers of peace.
The word, “hope,” reflects personal desire and longing, yet it also reaches outward. We have
hopes for our children and friends. If we visit a sick neighbor or take time to listen to someone else’s
troubles, we try to bring them cheer and restore their hope. The sharing of hope, then, can become
a mission. It is evangelism, because it carries to others some good news.
An experienced doctor once said that, for most of his patients, their real need was more
psychological than physical. Over the years, we all come to know the healing comfort of talking
with a friend, who really listens to us. Part of this comfort is the feeling of being cared for, but an
important addition to this comes in the actual words of the conversation. We are enabled to face
reality honestly, including not only hard things but hopeful possibilities. Sometimes, we only need
someone to talk with, in order to rediscover the hope that is there.
Actually, being involved in a mission of hope works two ways. We take with us our own glimmers
of hope, faltering though they may be. These call forth the glimmers that others may have, even if
temporarily almost overwhelmed. In caring conversation, their glimmers and ours unite and genuine
light is found to illuminate the lives of both.

My Dearly Beloved in the Lord:

I write you today for the last time as your Senior Pastor. My sabbatical leave started on March 1,
2008. I will be gone from your midst, but not from your hearts or from your memories.
You will forever be on my heart, also. I have spent over half of my life in this ministry. I have
dedicated babies here. I have married couples here. I have preached funerals here and I have been
made to know what a “home-away-from-home” is, right here at Trinity!
My family and I moved to Chicago from the East Coast. You welcomed us into your hearts. You
welcomed us into your homes. You nurtured my oldest two daughters from the time that they were
eight years old and seven years old.
You gave them a home in your homes. You gave them an extended family. You gave their mother
and me a place to be “safe” even when the waters on the sea of matrimony got rough and caused the
ship on which we were sailing to break apart.
You welcomed Ramah as my wife. You embraced Nathan and Nikol as our children. You have been
the only church family that Jamila has known.
You have planted the DNA of love upon the psyches of my grandchildren, Jeremiah, Jazmin and
Steven. You are forever a part of our lives.
You welcomed my father-in-law, Leonard Bratton, and my mother-in-law, Marjorie Bratton, into
our fold and you have continued to support my mother-in-law after my father-in-law went home to
be with the Lord.
You traveled to Philadelphia in 2001, when my father died. You came back to Philadelphia to be
with me in 2005, when my mother died.
You have prayed for me. You have put up with me. You have embraced me. You have loved me and
I am eternally in your debt.
I write you on this last Sunday of celebration, and I write you with joy and with thanksgiving
to God.

I am thankful to God for so many things and my joy is unspeakable!

My joy is for the memories that you have given me and my family. My gratitude to God is for the
way in which you have opened your arms and accepted my new family. My new family is Pastor Otis
Moss III, his lovely bride, Monica, and his two children, Elijah and Makayla.
I am grateful to God that you have embraced the answer to the prayers that we prayed for the
leadership of our church and the future of our church. I am grateful to God for your standing beside
Pastor Moss and standing behind Pastor Moss to make sure that God’s Will is done as Pastor Moss
follows the lead of Him who is the Good Shepherd.
It is with joy, thanksgiving to God and great anticipation that I look forward to all of the awesome
things that God is going to do in and through Pastor Moss’ leadership and pastorate.
Thank you for loving him and thank you for being the best congregation on this side of Heaven!

A Tribute to Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright

Liberating Legend & Legend of Liberation

S
omewhere behind the veil of eternity, God took the cosmic clay of creation and formed a
soul—the soul God knew before the soul was attached to a temporal vessel we call flesh.
This soul was deposited in the womb of an expectant mother and joyous father in the City
of Brotherly Love, known as Philadelphia. Sensing the whisper of the Divine, the parents
named this soul, bound beautifully in innocent, infant flesh—Jeremiah.
Jeremiah—Daddy J, pastor, brother, son, friend, husband, Daddy, Granddaddy, uncle, preacher,
teacher and yes, part-time comedian. This wonderful, winsome, passionate and prophetic soul would
place a unique mark upon the collective consciousness of men and women who would dare carry the
bitter but sweet burden of preaching.
His voice would speak with the rhythmic, poetic prose of blues-inspired sorrow and the
improvisational jazz-inflected intonations of joy. If you listen to him, as I have, you hear the weight
of the Holy upon his words and witness the irresistible urge of speaking truth to power and the need
to pull the existentially exiled from the abyss of self-hate. His unique preaching ministry is and has
been a homiletic of recovery, remembering and revolutionary revelation. His ministry brings together
the broken bruised with the Good News of Christ.
It must be said, this soul carries a burdensome joy, for the power of the prophet is rooted in his
ability to weep with the widows and mourn with the marginalized. This causes prophetic frustration,
because the Word they want to birth in the world, stays in the first trimester of gestation. They only
get a glimpse of the Promised Land, never to cross over. Prophets only get a glimpse because when
others think they have arrived, the Jeremiahs of the world are never satisfied. We salute this soul who
God knew before he was born and after he was birthed from his mother’s womb and was resuscitated
and resurrected for such a time as this.
So we honor you. We thank you, pastor, Daddy J, Dr. Wright. You are a liberating legend and we
give thanks to God, for he knew you and formed you before you were in your mother’s womb.

Text goes here ance D. Watson is a three-time summa cum laude graduate of
Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, from which he holds the
bachelor of science degree in psychology, the bachelor of arts degree in
philosophy and the master of arts degree in guidance and counseling.
He is a magna cum laude graduate of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of
Theology at Virginia Union University from which he holds a master of divinity
degree, and a summa cum laude graduate of the Presbyterian School of Christian
Education at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He has also
earned his doctoral degree at United Theological Seminary where he had the
distinction of serving as an adjunct professor while working on his degree.
His achievements and recognitions are noteworthy. He has been honored as an
Outstanding Contributor to Education, an Outstanding Communicator and Minister of the Year, as well as an
African American Role Model by several organizations. He is listed in Who’s Who in Religion, and a member of
the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
He serves as senior pastor of the Saint Paul’s Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia, and chief visionary for
its corporate affiliates, Destiny Child Development Center, Destiny Center for the Performing Arts, Charisma
Books and Gifts, Perfect Placement, At Your Service, Saint Paul’s Community Foundation, NIA, Inc. of Greater
Richmond, Positive Power Media Group and Destiny Christian Academy, serving children in grades 1– 8.
This young, progressive and forward-looking congregation for “People On the Grow” serves as the spiritual
home for more than 10,000 persons and supports mission and ministry causes around the globe. Saint Paul’s
has acquired and constructed a 120,000+ square foot campus on 47 flowing acres of land. In 2006, the church
opened the first of several locations planned as it builds a “spiritual beltway” around the city of Richmond
and recently, the church has acquired 265 additional acres of land upon which it plans to construct an entire
community, complete with residential, office and commercial endeavors.
Rev. Watson is the host of the telecast Positive Power, seen locally on WTVR – Channel 6 and nationally on
TV One network. Saint Paul’s has been noted by the Virginia General Baptist Association as one of the fastest
growing churches in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
His works have been featured in the African American Pulpit, the Baptist Herald and several other
publications. He is author of Being Healthy From Now On, Maximize Your Edge: Navigating Life’s
Challenges and That Was Then, This is NOW! available through all major bookstores and www.lancewatson.org.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, he is married to Rosemary Wilder, a noted and world-traveled singer, and
together they parent three children: Lance, Rachel and Damon.

Text goes here ev. Otis Moss III currently serves as pastor of Trinity United
Church of Christ under the leadership of Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah
A. Wright, Jr. Prior to joining the pastoral staff at Trinity United Church
of Christ, Rev. Moss served as pastor of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church in
Augusta, Georgia. After his arrival, Tabernacle was blessed, through Christ, to
increase from 125 members to over 2100 disciples.
Rev. Moss received his bachelor of arts degree in religion and philosophy from
Morehouse College. He went on to do his graduate work at Yale University,
where he graduated with a master of divinity degree with a concentration in
ethics and theology.
Rev. Moss began his pursuit of a Ph.D. in religion and social change at the
University of Denver/Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, under the tutelage of African American
historian and theologian, Dr. Vincent Harding. While studying at Iliff, Rev. Moss was blessed to be called
to serve the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Moving his family to Augusta, GA, meant that he had to place his
studies on hold. Despite this academic detour, Rev. Moss maintains a strong commitment to scholarly research
and teaching. His passion for academic excellence has never wavered. Evidence of this abounds in the many
roles he has performed as adjunct professor at numerous colleges and universities across the country. Highly
regarded as a preacher, Rev. Moss has received numerous awards and recognitions. Rev. Moss is committed to
intergenerational ministry and prophetic preaching. His passion for youth and intergenerational ministry led
him to create the Issachar Movement, a consulting group designed to bridge the generation gap within churches
and train a new generation of prophetic church leadership.
Rev. Moss is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Otis (Edwina) Moss, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio. He is the husband of
Monica Brown Moss. Rev. and Mrs. Moss have a five-year-old son, Elijah Wynton Taylor Moss, and a two-year-
old daughter, Makayla Elon Moss.

 biographical sketch
Rev. Frederick Douglas Haynes III has made it his mission to
empower changed people to change the world. His message is clear: If Christians
are to positively impact the world, they must be willing to minister beyond the
walls of the church.
As senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church since 1983, Rev. Haynes
leads one of the largest church congregations in Dallas. In the last decade alone,
the 30-year-old church has grown from approximately 500 members to over
9,000 members.
A native of San Francisco, California, Rev. Haynes is the third in a line of well-
known, socially conscious preachers. He graduated from Bishop College in 1982
with a bachelor of arts degree in religion and English. He earned a master of
divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and received honorary doctorates of divinity
from Paul Quinn College and Texas College. On May 6, 2005, Rev. Haynes received his doctor of ministry
degree from Oxford University in Oxford, England. A popular guest preacher, his progressive, Bible-based
message has reached millions of people in locations around the world, including Africa, Australia, the Caribbean
and throughout North America.
January 1, 2006 marked the grand opening of the new Friendship-West Community. The 315,000-square-
foot Worship and Conference Center is only Phase I of the Community.
With a gift of relating to young people, Rev. Haynes has taken steps toward reaching the young secular
community that has been turned off by tradition and require a more contemporary method towards receiving
Christ. In 2001, he was asked to close the #1-rated Dallas morning radio show – Skip Murphy and the Morning
Team on K104-FM – with a spiritual segment called, “Inspirational Vitamin.”
A firm believer in community involvement, Rev. Haynes is vice-president of the African American Pastors
Coalition, board member of Paul Quinn College, and a former board member of the Dallas Urban League.
He serves on the honorary committee of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Project Foundation, based in
Washington, D.C. He is the executive secretary of the Evangelism Board of the National Baptist Convention,
USA, Inc. and is a member of Alphas Phi Alphas Fraternity, Inc. Rev. Haynes is the founder/CEO of FDH
Ministries, Inc. and Chairman of the Board of Frederick Douglas Academy, a Friendship-West academic
institution educating the minds of our future pre-K through third grade students.
Rev. Haynes has received numerous awards and recognition. Like great preachers before him, he was
inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. In 2000, he was invited
by the 42nd U.S. President, William Jefferson Clinton, to participate in dialogue regarding issues impacting the
African American community. He has also spoken on national platforms, including the National Urban League
Convention.
Rev. Haynes is married to Debra Peek-Haynes, founder and president of Quorum Commercial, a Dallas
commercial real estate firm. They are the parents of a beautiful 14-year-old daughter, Abeni Jewel Haynes.

the results of a Redeemed LifE
A SACRIFICE FOR A SOLDIER

A
n old soldier, worn out in the service of his country, began playing the
violin on the street to earn his living. One day, on the streets of Vienna,
his hand trembled so severely that he could no longer play. A passerby
stopped and said, “Friend, you are too old and too feeble. Give me your violin.”
The stranger played so sweetly that a crowd soon gathered and coins poured
into the tattered hat of the old soldier. The new violinist emptied the money into
the soldier’s pocket and played again, more sweetly than before. Again, the hat
was filled with money, which was turned over to the veteran soldier. The stranger
finally handed the violin back and was on his way.
“Who was he?” asked the bystanders. “Why, that is Amard Bucher, the great
violinist,” some exclaimed.
And so it was. The master violinist had taken the man’s place, had assumed
his poverty, endured his disgrace, played his music and earned his living. He had
made a sacrifice for that old soldier.

A
s we honor our Senior Pastor for 36
years of faithful service, we thank God
for sending us a shepherd after God’s
own heart. We thank God for his pastoral and
patient personality, and we also thank God for
his prophetic power. Pastor Wright has never
ceased to speak truth to power in order to
benefit the lives of countless millions around
the world.
One of the issues that Pastor Wright has
continued to speak, preach and advocate is
the pandemic of HIV/AIDS that has ravaged
communities and countries, particularly as it
relates to people of African descent. Consider
the following facts:
• Of the estimated 40,000 new HIV
infections each year, more than 50
percent occur among African Americans.
• In 1998, African American women
constituted 64 percent of new female
AIDS cases and African American men
accounted for 50 percent of new AIDS
cases among men.
• AIDS is the number one cause of death
for Black adults, aged 25 to 44, before
heart disease, cancer and homicide.
• One in 50 Black men is HIV-positive.
One in 160 Black women is HIV-
positive.
• Black senior citizens represent more than
50 percent of HIV cases among persons
over age 55.

• Intravenous drug use is fueling the
epidemic in Black communities. It
accounts for 43 percent of infections
among Black women and 38 percent
among Black men. Many women contract
HIV infection through sex with an
injection drug user.
• In 1998, men of color who have sex with
men represented 52 percent of total AIDS
cases. By comparison, in 1989 men of
color who have sex with men represented
31 percent of total AIDS cases.
• Although only 15 percent of the
adolescent population in the United
States is Black, over 60 percent of AIDS
cases reported in 1999 among 13-19 year
olds were among Blacks.
• Black children represent almost two-
thirds (62 percent) of all reported
pediatric AIDS cases.
• AIDS is a global problem among Black
people. The World Health Organization
reveals that the disease is the number
one leading cause of death in Africa.
The United Nations estimated that
two million Africans died of AIDS in
1998, accounting for 80 percent of the
worldwide total of AIDS deaths. Nine
out of ten children with HIV are in sub-
Saharan Africa. By the end of the year
2000, a cumulative total of 13 million
children, the majority in Africa, have lost
one or both parents to AIDS.

That being said, we acknowledge that this is the National Black Church Week of Prayer For The
Healing of AIDS. All across the country, Black churches will be engaging in ministry and education
around the pandemic of HIV/AIDS that has affected our communities so much. In order to stop
HIV/AIDS, knowing better will help us to do better. Pastor Wright is known to say that the spread
of HIV/AIDS happens in three ways: (1) Blood, (2) Semen, and (3) Ignorance. We would not have
you ignorant. Therefore, the HIV/AIDS Ministry of your church will be hosting events each night
this week to help educate and discuss the affects of HIV/AIDS.
