The African Diaspora: Looking Back to Move Forward
January 30, 2008, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., 1104 S. Wabash Ave, Room 402

Moderator Dr. Stephanie Shonekan (Columbia College) and panelists Dr. Glennon
Graham (Columbia College), Dr. Cadence Wynter (Columbia College), Dr. Carol Lee
(Northwestern), and Dr. Maria de Lourdes Siqueria (Brazil) will discuss the historical,
social and political trajectories of Africa and the African diaspora.
As part of Columbia College Chicago’s annual African Heritage Celebration, Columbia’s [C]
Spaces and Liberal Education department present the exhibition Goya Lopes: The African Diaspora in Brazil.
Goya Lopes uses textile design as the primary medium to create the story of the various African cultures
and experiences transported to Brazil during the period of the slave trade. With the use of large swaths of
hand-stamped cloth, Lopes will present a visual timeline beginning with the first enslaved Africans brought to
Brazil and concluding with today’s diverse and flourishing diaspora.
The African diaspora is global, yet each country’s experience has been distinct. Artists have played a
vital role in preserving and passing down the history from generation to generation. In Bahia, Brazil, Goya
Lopes is one such artist.

Goya Lopes: The African Diaspora in Brazil is part of Columbia College’s ongoing, institution-wide
initiative, Critical Encounters. This year’s Critical Encounters focus is Poverty and Privilege. The College
has chosen this focus as a way of questioning the complex myths and realities that arise out of our cultural
and social beliefs about those who have and those who have not.

journalistic minds this week (in yet another attempt to discredit Barack Obama), Xernona

Wright and the Trumpet magazine in a very different way than the way the Washington Post sees it!
On the second weekend of this month, Jeri and her magazine were given the Spiritual
Enlightenment Award by the Trumpet Awards Foundation. Jeri was honored (along with Bishop
John Richard Bryant of the African Methodist Episcopal Church) for her outstanding contribution to
our people, our race, our history, our heritage and our culture.
This is a congratulatory note from your church family, Jeri. This is also a “thank you” note from
your dad. Most importantly, this is a note from a servant of God who wants to say to you publicly, I
thank God for you!
I wish the entire congregation could have been in Atlanta with us as Ramah and I listened to Jeri
accept the award. She not only acknowledged me and my ministry. She not only acknowledged Dr.
Martin Marty who prodded me into having a church publication that dealt with the real world in
which the church sits. Jeri also acknowledged Reverend Barbara Allen.
Reverend Barbara Allen started the Trinity Trumpet on the first Sunday of March in 1982. It was
my tenth anniversary gift. Reverend Allen worked faithfully with the Trumpet across the years and
Jeri has taken it to a new level.
For your hard work, Jeri, we say thanks. For your faithfulness and your commitment, we say
thanks. For your integrity and your being willing to think “outside of the box,” we also say thanks
and we wish you God’s speed and God’s grace in this New Year.

that further impoverish eligible countries while reshaping African economies in ways that benefit the
creditors. It has been the conditions attached to loans and the prospect of debt relief through HIPC that
has made Africa’s debt a new form of slavery, denying African governments the economic sovereignty to
shape their economies to benefit their citizens.
Africa Action notes that the IMF ha agreed to address Liberia’s arrears, but international creditors have
not come together to provide the immediate 100% debt cancellation that Liberia needs to successfully
emerge from conflict and provide for the basic human needs of its population. Liberia’s creditors must now
spirit Liberia through the process to ensure rapid and comprehensive debt cancellation without harmful
conditions. This initial victory must inspire activists to continue efforts to seek complete debt cancellation.
Africa Action will accompany our African counterparts in Liberia on this path toward full debt
cancellation, seeking an expedited process without harmful
economic conditions attached and working to protect
Liberia from vulture funds. Liberia cannot afford to siphon 30 GOOD MINUTES
desperately needed resources to pay down an illegitimate AND
debt. Africa Action will continue to work for the recognition THE CHICAGO
of Liberia’s debt as illegitimate and its complete and SUNDAY EVENING

STEWARDSHIP

the results of a Redeemed LifE

PROFILE IN STEWARDSHIP

T
here is no typical volunteer. People who donate their time are as varied as
the jobs they do.
At 71, Ed Porter discovered that a leisurely retirement wasn’t for him.
At his wife’s suggestion, Porter began volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital in a
nearby suburb, updating their maintenance records.
Seven years later, Porter said, “I get a lot out of my work at St. Mary’s, like the
personal satisfaction of having a place to go, people to speak to and something
useful to do. It keeps me young.”
By way of contrast, Trevor Ferrell was only 11 when he made national
headlines for helping the homeless. Moved by the plight of homeless people, he
saw on a television news report, Trevor took his own pillow and an extra blanket
and persuaded his father to drive him to downtown Philadelphia, where he
handed the bedding to a man sleeping on a grate.
What began as a grassroots effort to help street people, ended with the
founding of Trevor’s Place, a Philadelphia shelter for the homeless.
You’re never too old to be a volunteer, and it is never too late or too early to
start. Begin by seeing what you can do for your own church.
