thank you!
I write you today to say, “Thank you!” I thank you for your support on the coldest Sunday in
the year!

Sunday, February 10th, the temperature did not get above three degrees Fahrenheit. The
temperature in the sanctuary, however, and the temperature in our souls was red hot!

It was hot because of your love for me and my love for you. It was “hot” because it was the last
Sunday that I would be preaching as the Senior Pastor of this congregation that I have served for
36 years. It was hot because the spirit of the Lord God was upon me and the anointing was heavy
on my soul.

Many of our members hung in there with me for all three services! They literally stayed to hear me
preach my final sermon—or my final three sermons to all three congregations who worship with us
every Sunday.

They were here for the 7:14 a.m. service. They were here for the 11:00 a.m., and they were here
for my “farewell” sermon at 6:00 in the evening.

I write this note to say, “Thank you,” to those who hung in there with me all three services. Some
even stayed for my two-and-one-half hour lecture in between the second and third services. I write
you to say a special thank you to those members.

I also write you to thank those of you who were here for one of three services. That Sunday
is a Sunday that will live forever in my memory. I thank you for making it such an unforgettable
“moment in time.”

I also thank you for 36 years. I thank you for the 36 years that some of you have been with me.
I thank you for every moment that all of you have been with me. I thank you for allowing me to
make mistakes and to do my best in trying to be the minister that God would have me be.

Sincerely and gratefully yours,

Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

my retirement celebration
Today is the second Sunday of the celebration of my thirty-six years of service to this congregation.
I thank you for your joining in with me to celebrate these thirty-six years and I thank you for joining
my friends of many years who will bring the messages today.
Last Sunday, three of my friends and colleagues of thirty years or more joined with us to kick off
the celebration. Reverend Frank Thomas preached the first service. Reverend Frank is a son of this
church. I ordained him over three decades ago. I thank him for his sermons across the years and I
especially thank him for last Sunday’s sermon.
I thank Dr. Thomas for his service to the church of Jesus Christ. I thank him for coming to share
with us and to share with the congregation where God has placed me and kept me for thirty-six years.
I came to Trinity United Church of Christ on March the 1st of 1972. My good friend, Bishop
Nathaniel Jarrett, was sent to serve the Martin Temple A.M.E. Zion Church in June of 1972.
Bishop Jarrett and I began our ministries in this city six months apart, and he and I have walked
together as co-laborers in Christ for thirty-six years. He preached our eleven o’clock service last week,
and he bought an awesome Word to the people of God.
I met Bishop Vashti McKenzie of the African Methodist Episcopal church long before she was a
Bishop. I met her even before she was a minister! When I met Vashti she was a steward at the Bethel
African Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Reverend Dr. John Richard Bryant was
her Pastor.
Across the years I have watched her accept her Call to Ministry, go to seminary, graduate from
seminary, become ordained as an Itinerant Elder in the A.M.E. church, and get sent by the Bishop to
pastor two churches.
Her first church was a small church with under ten members in the rural section of Maryland
between Baltimore and Delaware.
Her second pastorate was at the Payne Memorial A.M.E. Church in Baltimore. Payne is a large
congregation. Vashti was the first woman minister to be assigned by a Bishop in the A.M.E. church
to a large congregation! Needless to say, she did an awesome work there.
Frank Thomas has preached at our church for over thirty years. Nate Jarrett has preached at our
church for over thirty years. Vashti McKenzie started preaching at our church about fifteen years
ago, and she has been an annual visitor to our congregation, always bringing a fresh Word when she
comes and stands behind the sacred desk.

my retirement celebration, cont’d
All three of these servants of God preached very powerfully in honor of my thirty-six years and I
am grateful to God for their messages. You can pick up copies of their messages today.
Today starts a week-long celebration of my thirty-six years here. Today, the father of our Pastor,
the Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., joins with a thirty-six year friend, Dr. Yvonne Delk and one of my
mentors, Dr. Charles G. Adams, in bringing the second in a series of messages which celebrate my
time among you.
Dr. Adams is bringing 300 members of Hartford Church with him this evening to say, “Bon
Voyage” and for the gifts that all three of my friends bring today, I say, “To God be the Glory for the
things God has done!” Today, the president of our denomination, Rev. Dr. John Thomas, also joins
us for all three services and for that blessing I say, “Thank you!”
I have received letters and questions from around the country as persons have tried to understand
why I am having Worship Services and not a huge banquet or a gala of some sort to celebrate my
thirty-six years. As I said to you several Sundays ago in the article “No Charge,” I did not want our
members to have to pay money to say thank you for the years I have tried to serve you.
I have done like the old hymn of the church says and “given the best of my service.” I did not
want you to have to pay anything to say “Thank you” to me.
I hope that you will attend as many of these services today and this week as is humanly possible.
We have services each night this week. We have a mini-conference this coming weekend and we close
out next Sunday with Lance Watson, our own Pastor and Freddy Haynes bringing the final three
messages.
Next Sunday night we gather at Christ Universal Temple for our last service in order that the
entire congregation may be able to be present. Christ Universal seats more than twice the number
that we seat here in our Sanctuary.
I am looking forward to sharing these services with you and I thank you once again for the
privilege of having been able to be among you, to be with you and to love you for three-and-a-half
decades!

Sincerely yours,

Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

STEWARDSHIP
the results of a Redeemed LifE
THE DAY ISAIAH WAS CHOSEN TO BE A STEWARD

E
ight hundred years before Jesus was born, there was a very religious man named
Isaiah who lived in Jerusalem. Worshiping in the temple one day, Isaiah had a
direct revelation of God. Isaiah was totally stunned. He sensed the holiness of God
and how God’s purity contrasted with his own sinfulness. He felt that he was lacking in
holiness and that the people of Judea were as bad as he was, or worse.
God, however, did not chastise Isaiah. When he admitted his sinfulness, Isaiah was
instantly purified. He heard the words: “Your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted
out.” Then he heard the following words from God: “Whom shall I send and who will go
for us?” Without hesitation, Isaiah answered: “Here am I, send me!” (Isaiah 6:6-8) God
challenged Isaiah, and Isaiah took the challenge. That was the day Isaiah was chosen to
be a steward. He became such a dedicated prophet of God that his stewardship is greatly
admired by both Jews and Christians to this day.
Indeed, Jesus himself often quoted from Isaiah and his first sermon was based on a
passage from the book of Isaiah. (See Luke 4:18) How did Isaiah serve as a steward of
God? He was a dedicated prophet who spoke on behalf of God to sinful nations. He
worked hard to turn people away from idols and false gods and to the service of the one
true God. He labored to influence persons of greed and wealth to help the poor, the
widows and orphans and the oppressed. He fearlessly spoke on behalf of justice and took
personal ridicule in stride. He did so, because he knew God would help him, support him,
and be pleased with his dedicated service.
What does Isaiah’s stewardship say to us? Certainly, Isaiah serves as an example of how
we can serve God as he did. Such service will begin when we are as aware of God’s holy
and challenging presence in our sincere worship. It will continue as we each say, “Here am
I, send me!” It will culminate in our taking a stand for justice, for the poor and helpless,
and when we are willing to share our time, talent, financial resources, our bodies and souls
on behalf of God and God’s Kingdom. After all, if we pray, “thy kingdom come, thy will
be done on Earth,” shouldn’t we put that prayer to work personally? How can we do any less?

TO DO JUSTICE

Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the
wound of my people? Jeremiah 8: 22 (NIV)
These reductions in service, the current threat of an additional 13% of the budget, and the current
poor management structure threaten the presence of healing balm. By law, the Cook County Board
of Commissioners, must pass a budget for the County by February 18, 2008.

ACTION ITEMS
Call your Cook County Commissioner and demand:
1. An independent interim management team be established to manage the Cook County Bureau
of Health Services
2. Healthcare funding be restored to its pre-cut level.
