Public schools also serve public ends. Benjamin barber calls for public investment in schools as the
path to opportunity: “Equality is achieved not by handicapping the swiftest, but by assuring the less
advantaged a comparable opportunity. Comparable here does not mean identical…schooling allows
those born poor to compete with those born rich.” That NCLB invests rhetoric without adequate
federal financial support for our poorest schools is a moral indictment of our society. Listen to the
words of Dr. Martin Luther King: “I said to my children, ‘I don’t ever want you to forget that there
are millions of God’s children who cannot get a good education. You will never be what you ought
to be until they are what they ought to be.’”

The United Church of Christ has more than 5,700 churches throughout the United States. Rooted in
the Christian traditions of congregational governance and covenantal relationships, each UCC setting
speaks only for itself and not on behalf of every UCC congregation. UCC members and churches are free
to differ on important social issues, even as the UCC remains principally committed to unity in the midst
of our diversity.

STEWARDSHIP
the results of a Redeemed LifE
significance of time

The Christian steward is concerned about the use of time as a part of total
stewardship. The days and years at their disposal are a sacred trust. They are
stewards of time as long as they live.

People these days are aware of the significance of time as never before in human
history. The idea that this is a peaceful and unhurried existence has been replaced
by a rush to accomplish desired purposes immediately, as if there might not be a
tomorrow in which to do it. People are living with a sense of urgency.

Time is holy, because it may be limited. The condition of the world is such that
the representatives of any of the sciences and religion join in the belief that time,
as we have known, may have a definite limit. The current means of destruction
could possibly obliterate most life from the face of the earth.

A Christian steward who is faithful in the use of time does not live in fear of the
future, but constantly faces the question of whether or not they are making wise
use of the years at their disposal. The steward asks, “Am I being true to God if I
devote all my time to work, pleasure and sleep, even if I do tithe my money?”

Your Friends in Service,

The Stewardship Ministry
