UNCHANGING HAND WITH JESUS
Verse I Verse I
Time is filled with swift transition. I once was lost in sin, but Jesus took me in,
Naught of earth unmoved can stand. And then a little light from heaven filled my soul;
Build your hopes on things eternal It bathed my heart in love
Hold to God’s unchanging hand. And wrote my name above,
And just a little talk with Jesus made me whole.
Chorus
Hold to His hand, God’s unchanging hand.
Chorus
Hold to His hand, God’s unchanging hand.
Have a little talk with Jesus, tell Him all about
Build your hopes on things eternal Your troubles, Hear our faintest cry,
Hold to God’s unchanging hand. Answer by and by;
Verse II Feel a little prayer wheel turning,
Trust in Him who will not leave you. Know a little fire is burning,
Whatsoever years may bring. Find a little talk with Jesus makes it right.
If by earthly friends forsaken.
Still more closely to Him cling. Verse II
(Repeat Chorus) Sometimes my path seems drear,
Without a ray of cheer,
Verse III And then a cloud of doubt may hide the light of day;
Covet not this world’s vain riches. The mists of sin may rise and hide the starry skies,
That so rapidly decay. But just a little talk with Jesus clears the way.
Seek to gain the heav’nly treasures (Repeat Chorus)
Your enraptured soul will view.
(Repeat Chorus) Verse III
I may have doubts and fears,
Verse IV
My eyes be filled with tears,
When your journey is completed,
But Jesus is a friend who watches day and night;
If to God you have been true,
I go to Him in prayer, He knows my ev’ry care,
Fair and bright the home in Glory
And just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.
Your enraptured soul will view.

No Charge!

S
everal years ago, the gospel giant, Shirley Caesar sang a song entitled, “No Charge!” The theme
of the song was her trying to explain to her son how much she loved him and how much she
did for him at no charge.
Her son had given her a list of his chores and the cost of each chore like “taking out the garbage
for a week — 50 cents; cleaning my room for a week — $10.00.”
He totaled up his week’s work and told his mother what he was charging her. She then wrote out
a long list for him. On her list were things like caring for him when he was sick, sitting up with him
all night, fixing breakfast every day, making sure he was clothed and taken care of and her total was
“no charge!”
For thirty-six years you have supported my ministry and as I depart from the Office of Senior
Pastor, I want to say to you, “No Charge!” I want you to celebrate my thirty-six years without having
to pay.
For thirty-six years I have not had affairs that “charge” members of the church to attend. We are
having worship services each night during my last week here at the church and there is “no charge”
for those worship services.
We will lift up offerings each night to cover the cost of flying in our guest ministers and their hotel
accommodations, but those are offerings, and everybody is not giving the same thing in an offering.
It is not a charge. We are not charging you to attend those worship services!
On the Friday and Saturday leading up to my last Sunday here, we are having a two-day mini-
Conference. There is “no charge!” for that Conference.
We are asking people who want to eat at the church to give us $10 to cover breakfast and lunch
each day. Several of our members have already paid $25 and $40 for the Conference and we have the
receipts for your registration to that Conference.
We will give your money back to you today, if you come to the table and bring your receipt. If you
do not have your receipt, we have a copy of the receipts of those who paid and we will give you the
extra money back.
Each week we sell dinners at our church for $6. That is not a “fundraiser.” For at least twenty-five
years I have called them “fun-raisers.” Our meal times are fellowship times and fun times. The cost is
only to cover the expenses of the food.
As the kids have been saying now for about ten years, “I ain’t going out like that!” I am not going
out charging you anything but the cost of the food. The people who are preparing the food are
doing it out of love for me and I am not “charging you.”

Pastor’s page

The people who will be serving that day are doing it freely because of their appreciation of my
ministry. I am not going to kick you in the face by “charging you” to pay those who are working
freely. We are only asking you to cover the cost of the food.
I am sorry about the mix-up. I am sorry about those of you who were told that you could not
attend the Conference if you did not pay.
There is “no charge” for the Conference!
If you do not want to eat on either day, then you simply will not have a receipt, nor will you be
able to present your receipt to the servers, so that you can enjoy the meals that they have prepared.
If you only intend to attend the sessions at the Conference, there is “no charge!” If you are
attending the Conference and intending to eat, the only cost we are asking for is to cover the cost of
the food for each meal that you eat.
I am sorry about the mix-up. I am sorry about the confusion.
I have tried to stay away from the planning of my own retirement celebration, but when I found
out that members were being told they had to pay and/or that the church was “charging them” to
attend a Conference celebrating my ministry, I blew a gasket! Please forgive me.
I also found out that while I was at Howard University a “gala” was announced in celebration of
my thirty-six years. THERE WILL BE NO GALA!
I would not charge members to come and say “Thank you” to me. I am the one who should be
saying “Thank You” to you.
I am saying “Thank You” to you and I am thanking God for the privilege of having been able to
serve you for thirty-six years. To say goodbye to me, please remember this. There is, “No Charge!”
In the words of Martin Lawrence, “Now, run and tell that!”

Lovingly yours,

Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

Super Bowl Sunday
with the Senior Pastor!
L ast week at the eleven o’clock service I invited the Sanctuary Choir to join me in choosing
“The Pastor over The Patriots.” I am now making that same invitation to you.
Tonight is my last Baptismal Service as Senior Pastor. Tonight is my last Communion Service as
Senior Pastor.
I am inviting you to come and share with me on my last Communion Sunday rather than spending
money you do not have to go watch the Patriots and to party with folk who have no vested interest
in the Patriots.
Tonight, millions of African Americans will be betting, making bets, collecting money they won
from bets, celebrating, drinking and having a great time because the Boston Patriots are expected to
end a perfect season. What has that to do with you?
What has that to do with God? What does that have to do with your church?
I am asking you to give up the first half of the Super Bowl Game. I am asking you to give up all of
the drinking, partying, laughing and eating.
I am even asking you to consider not spending the money that you are going to spend on Super
Bowl parties today. For many of you this request comes too late!
For others of you, however, I am simply asking you to join me here in the Sanctuary for my
last Baptismal Service and my last First Sunday Communion Service. I look forward to seeing you
tonight at five o’clock.

Sincerely yours,

Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

HEALTH CARE SCHOLARSHIP
Advocate Health Care

January 22, 2008

Dear Pastor:
Advocate Health Care is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted
for the Rev. Reuben A. Sheares II Excellence in Health Care Scholarship. This scholarship is
awarded annually to an outstanding African-American student who is a member of a UCC
or ELCA church and who is pursuing a career in a health profession.
Rev. Sheares was a United Church of Christ minister who spent his life serving people in
his church and his community. This scholarship recognizes the significant contribution Rev.
Sheares made to the health care ministry of Jesus Christ through his service as a member of
the former Evangelical Health Systems Board of Directors (one of Advocate’s predecessor
organizations). Rev. Sheares worked tirelessly in the service of the church over five decades
and provided important leadership in addressing the complex and enduring challenges of
health care in this country. Rev. Sheares lived the mission of the United Church of Christ in
health and welfare, rooted in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
The purpose of this scholarship is to nurture leaders in health care who will work out of
their faith commitments and values. African American students in your congregation who
are pursuing education in a health field and who have not already been a recipient of this
award are eligible to apply. Please announce this opportunity in your church and distribute
this information to those who may be interested. One award of $2,500 will be made for the
2008 academic calendar year beginning in Fall 2008. Please see the attached sheet for the
application guidelines. The application submittal deadline is Tuesday, April 1, 2008.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call Lynn Rolseth, Advocate’s Mission &
Spiritual Care Specialist, at 630-990-5391 or e-mail her at lynn.rolseth@advocatehealth.com.
We are grateful for your partnership in ministry and for the bounty of smart, skilled and
committed individuals in our churches who are responding to God’s call to serve people’s
most basic and critical needs. We look forward to receiving the applications and to getting to
know many of the future leaders of health care.
Many Blessings,

Rev. Bonnie Condon

STEWARDSHIP
the results of a Redeemed LifE
Giving Guidelines for
Prayerful Consideration

Giving in proportion to what God has done for each of us. Luke 12:48
Giving regularly (weekly, monthly), as encouraged in I Corinthians 16:2
Giving “first fruits” (or the promised amount) first: Nehemiah 10:35
Giving sacrificially: I Chronicles 21:24
Giving cheerfully and joyfully: II Corinthians 9:8
Giving to care for the needs of others: Galatians 6:10

Generosity is Relative
Generosity, of course, is relative. Twenty dollars from one person is very generous,
from another, a mere pittance. When it comes to church support, that is why we are
asked not for equal giving, but for equal sacrifice. Only the giving individual — and
God — can judge when there is sacrifice.

Stewardship takes all of us into account. The church doesn’t just need to receive
money — you need to be generous.

Love in Deed
“By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our
lives for the brethren. But, if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet
closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not
love in word or speech, but in deed and in truth.” I John 3:16-18.
